HH Varsity Club Insider: Kankakee Valley boys with early name getting Buzz

nkzfdzgc4fzuiqu6lvs3

Kankakee Valley boys - Departing Coach Bill Shepherd
WHEATFIELD, Ind. -- (Updated 4/10) Coach Shepherd ends his tenure as Kougar coach after a 14-10 docket last season. Varsity Club member reports a large group of seniors departs this spring, but of the six, report points to just three that were major contributors. Losing leading scorer Camden Webster(17PPG) will sting, but a trio of srs-2-b should be back, and each shouldered a large share of the load last season. Virtually all varsity height goes with the grads, but a fourth sr-2-b intrigues as a 6-7 project. Given that much of the returning roster tops out at about 6-2, he will certainly play a larger role this go-round. KV is member of the Northwest Crossroads Conference. HS English and Eled only teaching, but more expected. Additional Varsity Clubber reports admin would like to move quickly. Apps deadline 4/25, first round interviews week of 4/29, second round interviews week of 5/6, with name to board target of 5/13. Last year’s JV Coach and KV teacher Brett Walther mentioned in email and text report as potential name.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Brownsburg girls return 6-6 proven post

vwcp3oij7nlk8zg1zhjl

Brownsburg girls - Departing Coach Debbie Smiley
BROWNSBURG, Ind. -- (Updated 4/12)
Coach Smiley has resigned after nine years at Brownsburg (151-82.) Last season saw the Bulldogs go 13-12, and Varsity Clubber reports much of that roster should be back. Chief among them is 6-6 sr-2-b post Avery Gordon (22PPG, 10RPG.) Backcourt graduate a great deal, but there are a few that report states could fill those voids if there is some growth. The schedule does no favors as it is regularly nails. Plus the Hoosier Crossroads Conference could make an argument as one of the toughest top to bottom in the state - Five teams in state top 25 last season. (Franklin Central, Fishers, WEstfield, Zionsville, HSE, Avon, Noblesville.) Brownsburg teaching gigs include MS Health/PE, HS Math, HS Science, MS Science, HS, SS, HS Spanish, Eled, MS ELA, HS French

Update on Austin

gpik4xvvqewmzl3jsvla

Austin boys - Departing Coach Randy Edwards
AUSTIN, Ind. -- (Updated 3/8) Now confirmed that Coach Edwards will not return for an eighth year in Austin. The Eagles were 7-17 last season finished and 7th in the 9-team Mid-Southern Conference. Good Varsity Club member reports there was some unfounded optimism regarding them improving their record from the past year, but a combination of attitudes and inconsistency finished this team with pretty much the same record as the year before. From that group, reportedly three key contributors graduate. JV described as average. Looking way down the line, 8th grade described as below average. However, 7th grade went 23-0 this past season, and a Varsity Club member reports some kid dropped 50+ in one of their games. 6th and 5th grade decent. Community pressure to win in this town is legit. No teaching jobs at this time. (Updated 4/1) Good Varsity Clubber reports NO talent right now, community and school who wants to win NOW though. One of the best 7th graders in the state, but word is there is little chance he will end up there. Names hearing, Joey Hart (Updated 4/15) Varsity Club reports Hart no longer in the picture.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Board votes 5-2 not to renew Bloomfield boys

tpnau75mvjatl3sqkhqp

Bloomfield boys - Departing Coach JB Neill
BLOOMFIELD, Ind. -- (Updated 3/22) Can now confirm Bloomfield board has voted not to renew Coach Neill’s contract by a vote of 5-2. The Cards went 13-14 last season and finished Sectional runners-up. They also finished seventh in the 16-team Wabash Valley Classic. Varsity Club member reports that only one senior was on last season’s roster and many considered what the Cardinals accomplished as a pretty successful season overall. However, a small town school board felt otherwise. At least enough of them did to get the coach fired. Teaching jobs are limited at this point. Varsity Clubber adds school is posting an odd HS/MS Math/Science/Stem position - as in one job. Unsure at this posting if Coach Neill is also out as AD. Approach with caution.

Rosters named for 2024 IndyStar boys' All-Star 'Futures Game'

Rosters named for 2024 IndyStar boys' All-Star 'Futures Game'

Two players each from Fishers, Lawrence North and Mt. Vernon (Fortville) plus one player from 18 other schools have been named to the rosters for the 2024 IndyStar boys' All-Star "Futures Game," All-Star games director Mike Broughton announced Sunday (April 14).

The Futures Games, one each for boys and girls, are a second-year part of the Indiana All-Star basketball program. The Futures Games will pair teams of current Indiana freshmen and sophomores in a North-South format. The second Futures Games will be played Monday, June 3 at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Ind. The girls' game is set for 6:00 p.m., and the boys' game will follow about 8:00 p.m.

Freshmen Jason Gardner Jr. and Cooper Zachary of Fishers as well as sophomores Kai McGrew and Brennan Miller of Lawrence North have been selected to the North Team for the 2024 Futures Game. Those four players will be joined by sophomore Camden Bell of Wapahani, sophomore Justin Curry II of Noblesville, sophomore Terrence Hayes Jr. of Gary 21st Century, sophomore Reginald Hinton of Gary West, freshman Elijah King of South Bend Saint Joseph, sophomore Steven Reynolds III of South Bend Washington, sophomore Ethan Roseman of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard and sophomore Dikembe Shaw of Crown Point on the North squad.

Sophomores Luke Ertel and Julien Smith of Mt. Vernon (Fortville) will team with 10 others on the South Team. Completing that squad are freshman J.J. Craig of Warren Central, sophomore Kasen Daeger of Silver Creek, sophomore DeZhon Hall of Pike, sophomore Evan Harrell of Carmel, sophomore Edward Hazelett III of Franklin Central, sophomore James Kalala of Southport, freshman Jaylan Mitchell of Evansville Reitz, sophomore Blake Neill of Bloomfield, sophomore Treigh Schelsky of Parke Heritage and sophomore Eli Sego of Triton Central.

Trent Whitaker of New Palestine is head coach for the North Team. He will be assisted by Travis Hannah of John Glenn. Brent Dalrymple of North Daviess is head coach for the South Team. He will be assisted by Paul Ferguson of Columbus North.

Whitaker is 138-90 in nine seasons at New Palestine, including sectional titles in 2019, 2020, 2023 and 2024. Hannah has a 218-176 record in 17 seasons at John Glenn and 311-265 in 25 seasons as a varsity coach. His record includes four sectional titles, three regional crowns, one semi-state trophy and the 2007 Class A state championship when he was at Oregon-Davis.

Dalrymple is 355-228 in 24 seasons at North Daviess. His ledger includes seven sectional titles, four regional crowns, one semi-state trophy and the 2022 Class A state championship. Ferguson is 123-86 in nine seasons at Columbus North, including a sectional title in 2023. His overall mark is 256-141 in 16 seasons, including a 133-55 mark in seven seasons at Wheaton Academy in Illinois.

Players and coaches for the All-Star Futures Games are picked by a Futures Games committee chaired by Broughton. The players for the 2024 girls' Futures Game were announced on March 29. In a change from last year, the 2024 Futures Games will feature only freshmen and sophomores. The inaugural Futures Games in 2023 included freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

In the inaugural boys' Futures Game, Braylon Mullins of Greenfield-Central scored 16 points to lead a balanced South Team to a 100-96 victory. K.J. Windham of Ben Davis added 15 points, while Jack Benter of Brownstown Central and Azavier Robinson of Lawrence North each netted 14 points, Taray Howell of Evansville Bosse chipped in 12 points and Brennan Miller of Lawrence North had 10 points for the winners. Flory Bidunga collected MVP honors after totaling game highs of 21 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for the North. Ajani Washington, then of Fort Wayne Concordia, added 20 points. Sabien Cain of University had 17 points.

In the first girls' Futures Game, Maya Makalusky of Hamilton Southeastern scored 15 points and Jordyn Poole of Fort Wayne Snider tallied 11 points as the North girls defeated the South girls 73-63. Talia Harris of Fishers added eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals for the North and was named Game MVP. Jaylah Lampley of Lawrence Central and Juliann Woodard of Jennings County each scored 12 points to pace the South girls.

The Indiana All-Stars program was founded in 1939 when the Indiana boys' All-Stars played the state champion Frankfort Hot Dogs. The All-Star series with Kentucky began in 1940, and the girls' portion of the All-Stars was added in 1976. The Junior All-Stars, boys and girls, were added in 1996. The Futures Games doubleheader was added in 2023.

The Indiana portion of the All-Star Games is organized and produced by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. The Indianapolis Star, with its IndyStar brand, is the title sponsor. Hoosier Shooting Academy is a presenting partner for All-Star week. Energy Systems Group is a presenting partner for the Saturday doubleheader against Kentucky.

Oregon Columnist thinks Hoosier Hysteria has it right

[No, I am talking about March Madness, the basketball phenomena so huge it spills over into April. I am from Indiana, where we scorn the generic March Madness for the more accurate and appropriate Hoosier Hysteria. Many non-Hoosiers are unaware that it is illegal in Indiana not to love basketball. Middle school teams draw crowds of thousands, entire towns close down in holiday when their high school teams make it to the tourney, and college teams receive celebrity attention and treatment.]

HH Varsity Club Insider: Frankfort enrollment smaller than first appears

l5rbeirun41pmapuqil2

Frankfort boys - Departing Coach Rick Scholl
FRANKFORT, Ind. -- (Updated 4/12)
Frankfort continues the turnstyle as they will be hiring their fourth coach in as many years. Coach Scholl’s Hotdogs were 10-15 during his only season there last year. Four seniors graduate and all four were starters and heavy contributors. Varsity Clubber reports the only 6-0 sr-2-b PG Alex Farley (16PPG) is the only holdover of consequence. Three other underclassmen saw varsity time on a regular basis, but were most definitely in the backseat. A typical JV should help fill out roster. Current conference - Sagamore Athletic Conference (2024 – 25) (Crawfordsville, Danville, Lebanon, North Montgomery, Southmont, Tri West, Western Boone.) However, beginning with the 25-26 school year, Frankfort will be joining the Monon Athletic Conference (Cascade, Crawfordsville, Greencastle, North Montgomery, North Putnam, Southmont, Western Boone.) Varsity Club member reports to emphasize this info - Although Frankfort has decent enrollment numbers, so many of the student population do not play basketball that their classification in terms of other schools is critically distorted. 3A on paper, but more like a 2A athletically when it comes to participation. More expected but at present the only teaching openings are MS Sped, MS Science, MS Media, Eled, and HS Auto.

HH Varsity Club Insider: BNL reportedly down to 3 names

yrks21hc5ebqaec8ybxr

Bedford North Lawrence girls - Departing Coach Jeff Allen
BEDFORD, Ind. -- (Updated 2/15) BNL athletic department has announced via Twitter/X that Coach Allen has stepped down after ten seasons (226-45) with the Stars. Last season was another great one for BNL as they finished 20-5 and took home the Sectional. Incoming coach will be without four seniors including much of the contributions to those 20 wins - Including a Miss Basketball candidate. 5-6 sr-2-b Tori Nikirk is expected back at guard, as is 5-6 forward and classmate Katie Godlevske. Both logged substantial time in supporting roles. However, good Varsity Clubber points to two underclassmen as keys to next year’s version of BNL. 5-7 Jr-2-b guard Trinidy Bailey (appeared in all varsity games) and 5-9 soph-2-b post Miley Sherrill (12 PPG & 5 RPG as a varsity frosh.) Hoosier Hills Conference always nails. Early name mentioned is JV Coach Brett Holtz, but also an email contradicting that. No teaching gigs at this time. (Updated 3/5) Timeline: 3/31 Apps deadline, Week of April 1st - Interviews round 1, Week of April 8th - Interviews round 2 and job offered, Thursday, April 18th - Board approval (Updated 4/12) Good Varsity Club member reports BNL has wrapped up interviews. Names Mentioned include: Jamie Cummings, Gregory Burton, Todd Windlan.

Looks like done deal at Eastbrook boys

wo69uvr8bcixvl4rtge0

Eastbrook boys - Departing Coach Greg Allison
MARION, Ind. -- (Updated 3/11) Coach Allison will not be back for a seventh season with the Panthers. Eastbrook has had a rough go of it as they have not seen the topside of .500 in almost ten years, and have not sniffed a Sectional title since 1998. Things might be trending in the right direction for this 2A program though. Good Varsity Club member reports that although three seniors graduate this spring, only two of them were regulars, and they were only good for a couple of buckets a game. In fact over 40PPG are on paper to return including top two leading scorers and rebounders. An underclass backcourt is expected back, and Eastbrook faithful are excited about a strong soph-2-b class. Not a ton of height as a couple of 6-2’s do it for the frontline, but overall the season goals are shifting for this program with what’s in the pipe right now. No won/loss record was included in report, but there was an emphasis on the frosh-2-b group being very solid as well. HS Math only position in the district right now, but more likely. Also worth mentioning girls job also open. Good Varsity Club member reports admin would like to pair with HS Math, HS Science, HS Ag. (Updated 4/12) Good Varsity Club member reports Jeff Liddick will be approved for this one. Coach Liddick has spent the last 12 years on the girls side winning four Sectionals at Eastbrook.

Update on Southport girls job

clu74rsqahychmfizscn

Southport girls - Departing Coach Adam Morelock
SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- (Updated 2/29) Coach has announced that he is resigning after seven seasons with the Cards. Last year was an exceptionally rough one, going just 2-20. Good Varsity Club member reports only a handful of seniors graduate, and although there were substantial minutes logged by a number of them, no significant loss is expected on the scoreboard. If there is much good news to report for incoming coach, it’s that five underclassmen endured trial by fire last year, and should be better for the efforts. Scoring was the biggest hurdle for the Cardinals last year. Southport managed around 30PPG last campaign, and all but 7 of that should be back. That’s still not much when spread across an entire roster. Truly it will be tough to count on any one Cardinal hitting for double digits on consistent basis. Varsity Clubber also reports that ball handling is another huge issue. Several outings saw more team turnovers than rebounds. “Effort is not the issue. Athleticism is.” Southport’s schedule doesn’t do them any favors either. 5-4 soph-2-b guard Lorelei Bennett did show some signs at times as a varsity frosh. JV described as below average, and no real help expected there. Great facilities and one of the finest old school gymnasiums in the state. Current opening include: MS ELA, Eled, HS Life Sci, HS Sped, HS Math, MS ELA, Varsity Club member reports those openings are for current year, and that they may or may not play a role in filling coaching gig. More jobs expected for fall semester. Good Varsity Clubber mentions Greg Burton-Eminence as a possible name. Burton is a Southport alum and former Cardinal assistant. Current Southport assistant Mike Gehlert also possible, but Southport has a history of not hiring ley coaches. (Updated 4/12) Word now that Southport down to 3. Intvs with Ad and principal. Report that Burton did not apply.

2024 IndyStar boys' Indiana All-Stars named!

2024 IndyStar boys' Indiana All-Stars named
13 players selected for squad that will face Kentucky in June

Thirteen players have been selected for the 2024 IndyStar Indiana boys' All-Stars, All-Stars game director Mike Broughton announced Thursday (April 11).

Those chosen to the team will play three games in June -- one exhibition game against the Indiana Junior All-Stars as well as home-and-home contests against the Kentucky All-Stars.

The players comprising 2024 Indiana boys' All-Stars, listed alphabetically, are Isaac Andrews of Wapahani, Jack Benter of Brownstown Central, Flory Bidunga of Kokomo, Trey Buchanan of Westfield, Micah Davis of Franklin Community, Aaron Fine of Noblesville, Keenan Garner of Fishers, Evan Haywood of Brebeuf Jesuit, Jack Miller of Scottsburg, Tyler Parrish of Chesterton, Karson Rogers of Kokomo, Tucker Tornatta of Evansville Memorial and K.J. Windham of Ben Davis.

The 2024 IndyStar Indiana Mr. Basketball will come from among the above players and be announced later.

The '24 boys' All-Stars have four players who have been a part of state championship teams (Benter, 2024 2A; Garner, 2024 4A; Miller, 2024 3A; and Windham, 2023 4A) as well as five players who have been a part of state runner-up squads (Andrews, 2024 2A; Bidunga, 2023 4A; Parrish, 2022 4A; Rogers, 2023 4A; and Windham, 2024 4A). The squad also features two players who were named IBCA first-team Academic All-State (Andrews and Miller) and one player who was selected IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State (Buchanan). In addition, Andrews was honored as the 2024 IHSAA Trester Award winner for Class 2A.

John Peckinpaugh of Kokomo has been named head coach of the 2024 boys' All-Stars. He will be assisted by Brandon Hoffman of Silver Creek and Josh Thompson of Barr-Reeve.

Peckinpaugh is 69-17 in three seasons at Kokomo and 91-41 in five seasons as a high school head coach, including two seasons at Noblesville. He also had a 63-61 mark in four seasons as a college head coach at Indiana Tech and Wheeling Jesuit in West Virginia. Hoffman is 239-108 in 14 seasons at Silver Creek, including Class 3A state titles in 2019 and 2021. Thompson is 134-29 in six seasons at Barr-Reeve, including the 2021 Class A state crown. He is 244-185 in 17 seasons overall with previous stops at Springs Valley, Wood Memorial and Vincennes Lincoln.

The Junior-Senior exhibition game is set for June 5 at Kokomo. The first game against Kentucky will be June 7 at Lexington Catholic High School. The final game against Kentucky will be June 8 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

All three dates will be doubleheaders with the IndyStar Indiana girls' All-Stars, whose roster was announced March 11. The roster for the Indiana girls' Junior All-Stars was announced March 4. The roster for the Indiana boys' Junior All-Stars was announced March 25.

The Indiana Junior All-Stars will play two girl-boy doubleheaders this year -- June 2 against the Kentucky Junior All-Stars at Scottsburg and June 7 against the Indiana seniors at Kokomo.

The second IndyStar Indiana All-Star "Futures Games" doubleheader will be June 3 at Hamilton Southeastern. The Futures Games will be a girls-boys doubleheader with Indiana-only squads of sophomores and freshmen in a North vs. South format. The girls' Futures Games rosters were announced March 29. The boys' Futures Games rosters will be announced later.

The Indiana All-Stars program was founded in 1939 when the Indiana Boys All-Stars played the state champion Frankfort Hot Dogs. The series with Kentucky began in 1940, and the girls' portion of the All-Stars was added in 1976. The Junior All-Stars, boys and girls, were added in 1996. The All-Star senior girls have played Kentucky every year since 1976, except 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The All-Star senior boys have played Kentucky in all but three years since 1940 -- 1943 (World War II), 1944 (World War II) and 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic). The Futures Games doubleheader was added in 2023.

The Indiana Senior boys lead 104-45 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior boys lead 41-11 in games against the Indiana Junior boys. The Indiana Junior boys lead 7-5 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior girls lead 53-41 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior girls lead 41-11 in games against the Indiana Junior girls. The Indiana Junior girls lead 11-1 in their series with Kentucky. In the inaugural Futures Games, the South boys prevailed 100-96 and the North girls won 73-63.

The Indiana portion of the All-Star Games is organized and produced by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. The Indianapolis Star, with its IndyStar brand, is a title sponsor. Hoosier Shooting Academy is a presenting partner of All-Star Week, and Energy Systems Group is a presented partner of the June 8 All-Star doubleheader at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The IndyStar Indiana All-Star Team is selected through a balloting process of coaches and media overseen by game organizers from the IBCA. The top vote getter will be named Mr. Basketball, and the remainder of the team is finalized by Broughton after observing numerous games and events throughout the season, conferring with coaches, school officials and media across the state. Broughton also reviews votes submitted by coaches and media who each could recommend up to 10 players.

Those chosen as 2024 IndyStar Indiana boys' All-Stars are listed below alphabetically. Jersey numbers will be assigned later.

HH Varsity Club Insider: John Glenn boys "It's going to be ugly."

mnmrr7cv59i8n4ymgfx6

John Glenn boys - Departing Coach Travis Hannah
WALKERTON, Ind. -- (Updated 4/11
) The Falcons went 13-14 in veteran Coach Hannah’s last season there. Coach would have a better idea than anyone regarding how next season is shaping up, and Varsity Club member reports it may be a good time to get out of Dodge. Report states four seniors from last year’s roster, and with their departure goes everything. Varsity Clubber indicates a grand total of 4PPG returns spread across six underclassmen who saw varsity time last season. Quoting report: “It’s going to be ugly.” Job openings reportedly include HS Health/PE, HS College/Careers, and HS SS.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Seeger returns a lot, but how much?

wc3p0r6lbz12jzit06y8

Seeger girls - Departing Coach Kevin Peterson (Interim)
WEST LEBANON, Ind. -- (Updated 4/10)
Coach Peterson’s interim position is being listed as open. Last season the Patriots finished 15-8. Good Varsity Club member reports this will be an interesting program over the next few years. Three seniors graduate, who each played considerable minutes. However, collectively they only accounted for about 10-11PPG on the scoreboard. Four regular rotation players are due back. The immediate question is about 5-11 sr-2-b Rylea Wetz (11PPG, 8RPG) - arguably the best of the returners. Coach Chad Wetz was suspended for the remainder of the year in January. A strong soph-2-be group moves up with several who saw varsity time as frosh. A couple of athletic jrs-2-b also in the mix. All told, this could be an extremely competitive squad, especially within the Wabash River Conference (Covington, Attica, North Vermillion, South Vermillion, Fountain Central, Riverton Parke, and Park Heritage.) Seeger with around 390 students is second largest in the conference - by a mile. Only South Vermillion at 500 is larger. JV is above average which is encouraging considering how many underclassmen were contributing at the varsity level. Varsity Clubber reports current teaching openings include HS Math, HS Health, Eled Art, and Eled Music. Potentially more.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Trilogy of Red Flags flying over Garrett boys job

nmolk8wjbk3govjwodja

Garrett boys - Departing Coach Andrew Evertts
GARRETT, Ind. -- (Updated 4/5) Now being reported that Coach Evertts has resigned after three seasons with the Railroaders. In an oddity all three seasons finished with an identical 5-18 record. Prior to New Year’s, Garrett sat just a game under below .500, but last year’s end-of-season 12-game losing streak was a killer. Garrett’s Northeast Corner Conference did them no favors either. Eastside, Angola, Central Noble, Busco, Prairie Hts, Lakeland, Fremont, and Fairfield. The undermanned Railroaders haven’t topped .500 for ten years. Varsity Club member reports potential B.E.S.T. nominee as allegedly some parents went to board and were listened to at least to some extent. To make matters worse, virtually all production graduates. Decent sr-2-b and a soph-2-b that showed some promise is about it for holdovers. Given the red flag trilogy, (the climate of losing, the lack of proven varsity contribution coming back, and a school board that allegedly needs an ear to misguided bleacher coaches) this one could be one to avoid. Varsity Clubber reports potential of JV Coach tossing hat in the ring, but assuming he understands the current landscape at Garrett maybe better than anyone and may opt not to. For those that still wish to forge ahead, HS SS and HS Spanish openings are there.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Memorial opens after 5 winning seasons

Memorial girls - Departing Coach Lee Auker
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- (Updated 4/5) Coach Auker has stepped down after five seasons and 100+ wins. Last year’s 20-6 squad had their season ended by the Tigers’ kryptonite (Gibson Southern) in Sectional. As a matter of fact, Memorial has had three 20-win seasons in a row come to an end courtesy of the GS Titans. Good Pocket City Varsity Clubber reports Tigers on paper to return two starters in soph-2-b Rylee Canaan (11PPG, 5RPG) and sr-2-b Myla Browning (9PPG, 3RPG, 4APG.) A number of other underclassmen logged some varsity time last season as well. Evansville has a bit of a unique setup in that Catholic schools, Mater Dei and Memorial, split the city in half and generally respect those guidelines in terms of where parochial students enroll. Internal interest unlikely. No word on JV record yet, but report states that feeder teams pretty solid. HS Math, HS Spanish, and HS Science.
