SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- (Updated 2/29) Coach has announced that he is resigning after seven seasons with the Cards. Last year was an exceptionally rough one, going just 2-20. Good Varsity Club member reports only a handful of seniors graduate, and although there were substantial minutes logged by a number of them, no significant loss is expected on the scoreboard. If there is much good news to report for incoming coach, it’s that five underclassmen endured trial by fire last year, and should be better for the efforts. Scoring was the biggest hurdle for the Cardinals last year. Southport managed around 30PPG last campaign, and all but 7 of that should be back. That’s still not much when spread across an entire roster. Truly it will be tough to count on any one Cardinal hitting for double digits on consistent basis. Varsity Clubber also reports that ball handling is another huge issue. Several outings saw more team turnovers than rebounds. “Effort is not the issue. Athleticism is.” Southport’s schedule doesn’t do them any favors either. 5-4 soph-2-b guard Lorelei Bennett did show some signs at times as a varsity frosh. JV described as below average, and no real help expected there. Great facilities and one of the finest old school gymnasiums in the state. Current opening include: MS ELA, Eled, HS Life Sci, HS Sped, HS Math, MS ELA, Varsity Club member reports those openings are for current year, and that they may or may not play a role in filling coaching gig. More jobs expected for fall semester. Good Varsity Clubber mentions Greg Burton-Eminence as a possible name. Burton is a Southport alum and former Cardinal assistant. Current Southport assistant Mike Gehlert also possible, but Southport has a history of not hiring ley coaches. (Updated 4/12) Word now that Southport down to 3. Intvs with Ad and principal.
