HH Varsity Club Insider: Carmel girls job facing Challenges

vbgelthy6ixrdacekiti

Carmel girls - Departing Coach Rick Risinger
CARMEL, Ind. – (Updated 3/27) Coach Risinger will not return after two seasons at Carmel. They were 11-12 and 10-13 with first round Sectional losses in each year. Not at all the success that Coach has been used to private Heritage Christian previously. Also not the success that, according to reports, is expected by certain Carmel families and boosters. The reality is that Carmel hasn’t cut down any Sectional nets in about seven years, and the annual habit of flirting with a 20-win season has also become a stranger. Three or four seniors leaving including two starters may keep that trend intact. Varsity Club member reports the real cause of Carmel struggles, at least regular season-wise, is a schedule that year-in and year-out ranks among the toughest in the state. Varsity Clubber points out that one could make the argument that their schedule is exactly where it should be in terms of difficulty, given their enrollment, facilities, and all the other intangibles that typically yield success. Still, when there are down years in regards to talent, that schedule is unrelenting. Some relief may be on the way, as Varsity Clubber reports a dynamite JV. In the younger grades, the feeder teams also described as winners although report mentions that, “God only knows where they’ll end up going to high school.” - A factor that now impacts many schools. Interest anticipated from within as Carmel boasts one of the larger coaching staffs around. One name mentioned specifically is Maliah Howard, current JV coach. That being said, Carmel still sees itself as a major league player, and will likely cast a wide net for a proven championship coach. Amazingly, a school of Carmel’s size doesn’t have any teaching positions, but at this time only a handful of Eled jobs are listed as open over their vast school system.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Crawford County should return One Solid

Crawford County boys - Departing Coach
MARANGO, Ind. – (Updated 3/27)
Coach John Hayes will not return after three seasons with the Wolf Pack. Last year’s squad finished 5-19, and good Varsity Club member indicates two seniors depart. One was a role player, but the other was team’s leading scorer, rebounder, and post presence. What should be back includes second leading scorer BRaxton Bowman. The 6-0 soph-2-b guard went for about 13PPG as a varsity frosh last go-round. Beyond Bowman, Varsity Club member reports not much else of proven commodities. Two 6-4’s are expected back that could provide length, but nobody was good for more than a coupe of buckets a game last year. One report points to some unconfirmed inside interest. HS Science open, but one email states admin willing to work with right coach on teaching gig.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Pendleton on Paper to Return a Lot

Pendleton Heights boys - Departing Coach Joe Buck
ARCADIA, Ind. – (Updated 3/27) Can now confirm PH is officially accepting apps. Coach Buck won over 200 games at Pendleton during his 15 years there. Last season teh Arabians finished 9-15, and a good Varsity Club member reports 3 seniors graduate including two starters. Several underclassmen are on paper to return and should set-up incoming coach for a competitive roster. Chief among them is 6-0 sr-2-b guard Cooper Sims. If he is back in green and white next season, so will his 20PPG. Plenty of height also could return from last year’s roster. Varsity Clubber states JV was below average. Internal interest expected. Confirmed teaching openings include: HS SPanish, HS English, HS Math, HS Sped.

LePeep's update--Important--New Location--Lincoln Square Pancake House

Downtown LePeep's ended operations two months ago. After consultation with our leader, QuadRunner/Shawn, our new breakfast location is Lincoln Square Pancake House, 150 West Market St. (that's one block west and a block and a half south of LePeep's). They do not take reservations. I informed the manager there that we traditionally have 15-22 persons. They will group us together as best they can. I told them we would be arriving at about 8:00 am (some a little bit before; some a bit after). Management said we should be good. On Saturday morning, I will also post a hard copy notice on LePeep's door announcing these alternate plans. Spread the word amongst the usual suspects! See everyone on Saturday morning.

Assistant Coaches of the Year from Heritage Hills & Oldenburg

Aides for Heritage Hills boys, Oldenburg Academy girls recognized by Indiana Basketball Coaches Association

Josh Wetzel of Heritage Hills and Brian Samples of Oldenburg Academy will receive special awards from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced Monday (March 24).

Wetzel, a long-time boys' assistant coach, and Samples, an 11-year girls' assistant coach and eight-year girls' head coach, each will be recognized as a 2025 IBCA Assistant Coach of the Year.

This is the eighth year that the IBCA is recognizing assistant coaches with an award. The awards are going to two coaches who have contributed in a significant way to their respective schools' athletic programs.

These awards will be presented during the 2025 IBCA Clinic on April 24-25 at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville.

Previous IBCA Assistant Coach of the Year honors have gone to Roger Bowling of Union County in 2018; Clark Miles of Jeffersonville and Danny Pierce of Crawfordsville in 2019; Jim Brothers of North Putnam and J.R. Moffatt of Hamilton Heights in 2020; Hassan Abdullah of Penn and Jim Higdon of Edinburgh in 2021; Ray Weatherford of Eastern (Pekin) and Scott Reid of Crown Point in 2022; J.D. Miller of Connersville and Stephanie Richie of Evansville Central in 2023; and Dean Scott of Barr-Reeve and Bill Lane of Jennings County in 2024.

Information on Wetzel and Samples, the 2025 honorees, follows.

IBCA Assistant Coach of the Year: Josh Wetzel, Heritage Hills boys

Josh Wetzel has been an assistant coach in the Heritage Hills boys’ basketball program for the past 22 seasons. He has been a fixture as a player or coach in southern Indiana basketball for at least a decade longer.

Wetzel started his coaching career in as an eighth-grade coach at Heritage Hills Middle School from 2001-03. He then moved to Heritage Hills High School, where he has been the JV coach and varsity assistant from 2003 to the present. He has worked for head coaches Marty Echelbarger (2003-07), Matt Sisley (2007-16) and Nate Hawkins (2016-present). Thus, Wetzel has been named an IBCA Assistant Coach of the Year for 2025.

“Josh has made a major impact on the many players he has coached over the past 22 years,” Hawkins said in nominating Wetzel. “Josh also is a middle school teacher and has stayed connected with many of his former players, helping mentor many into the profession that they have chosen to pursue.

“It has been a joy working with Josh for the past nine years and seeing how he has helped develop our young men into better players and people outside of basketball. Both items always have been the goal for him.”

Wetzel is a life-long member of the Lincoln City area and is a 1997 graduate of Heritage Hills High School. He played basketball for four seasons in high school, was part of a sectional champion as a senior and was named all-Pocket Athletic Conference and to the HBCA East-West All-Star Classic. He also played three years of football and one year of baseball for the Patriots.

He went on to play basketball at Brescia College (Ky.), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 2002. He later earned a master’s degree in education from Oakland City University in 2008. He currently is in his 23rd year as a science teacher at Heritage Hills Middle School.

“Many people look up to Josh and know that he is a stable force of the boys’ basketball program and school,” Hawkins said. “He is a dedicated member of our community and loves working with all of our Patriots. Josh has made a major impact on our school and continues to pour his heart into our community. He loves his students, players and co-workers at Heritage Hills.

“If you ask anyone about Josh, the first thing they will tell you is how dedicated he is to the job he does for our students. Josh has always done what is right and willing to take on any task that is asked of him. He gets the most out of his student-athletes through the positive leadership that he has shown over the years.”

Wetzel enjoys hunting, fishing and traveling with his family during his free time.

He and his wife, Amber, have three children – Allie, 19; Tait, 16; Ty, 14.

Semi-State Predictions

Good evening . Shown below are my predictions for tomorrow's
games. At each site I've numbered team from 1 to 4--with one being the team
that I think is likely to win the championship among the four teams. 4 would be
the least likely team to win.

Last week, I picked 26 of the 32 regional games correctly for 81%.

Enjoy the games.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Key Pieces should be back at Scecina Opening

x19xbnqvno3vp4sxt4uc

Scecina girls - Departing Coach Jacob DeWilde
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – (Updated 3/21) Now official that Crusader job is accepting applications. Pretty short report submitted on this one. Only two seniors depart and while one logged a lot of minutes, Varsity Club report indicates neither were stat stuffers. 5-6 jr-2-b Ainsley Brown is arguably the best of those expected back next year. Her 13PPG may be ready for the next step according to email. Underclassman Mia Miller is only post with any varsity experience. Report goes on to state that three other players return with significant varsity minutes but not much contribution.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Tippy Valley Opens with big Grad Losses

ot9cbske7txbhjyerwko

Tippecanoe Valley boys - Departing Coach Joe Luce
AKRON, Ind. – (Updated 3/21) Tippy Valley was 54-21 in Coach Luce’s three seasons. Last year was a great one as the Vikings went 20-6 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Valley won the first ever Indiana Northern State Conference title. Their 20 wins were the most in a season since the 2012-13 team went 20-4. Varsity Clubber reports 6-6 sr-2-b Stephen Akase is likely the only starter back as five seniors depart with Coach Luse. Akase is the real deal according to area reports (13PPG, 9RPG.) One unconfirmed report of potential portal situation, but again, nothing concrete. Average JV about .500. HS Ag and Eled Sped only jobs available at this point.

IBCA Names 3 Girls Coaches of the Year!

Three girls coaches honored by IBCA for 2024-25 season

Krebs, Satterfield and Anson-Eaves to receive Bob King Awards as girls' District Coaches of the Year

Three Indiana high school girls basketball coaches have been chosen as 2025 Bob King Coaches of the Year by their peers in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced Thursday (March 20).

Lenny Krebs of Class 4A state runner-up Warsaw, Brian Satterfield of Class 4A semi-state finalist Hamilton Southeastern and Hollie Anson-Eaves of Class 2A state champion South Knox have been selected as honorees for the 2024-25 season through voting that occurred from late January through late February, IBCA executive director Marty Johnson said.

Honors are awarded according to IHSAA district boundaries, and one coach from each district is a recipient – Krebs in District 1; Satterfield in District 2; and Anson-Eaves in District 3. These three coaches will receive plaques as an IBCA District Coach of the Year during the 2025 IBCA Clinic, which is set for April 24-25 at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville.

The Coach of the Year award is named for the late Bob King, the IBCA executive director from 1984-94. King, a Lebanon native, coached at Sacred Heart and Shortridge high schools in Indianapolis before serving as an assistant basketball coach at Purdue University. He later also was as an assistant athletic director and associate athletic director at Purdue.

A list of former IBCA/Bob King Coaches of the Year in girls' basketball is below. The 2025 IBCA/Bob King Coaches of the Year for boys' basketball will be announced later.

Here is information about the 2025 IBCA/Bob King girls' Coach of the Year honorees.

District 1: Lenny Krebs, Warsaw

Lenny Krebs is the IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year after guiding Warsaw to a 26-2 season and Class 4A state runner-up finish. Earlier, his Tigers won the Northern Lakes Conference, the Warsaw Sectional, the LaPorte Regional and the Frankfort Semi-State.

Krebs has compiled a 138-55 record in eight seasons at Warsaw, including NLC crowns in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. His overall record is 268-229 in 22 seasons as a head coach, including a 130-174 mark in 14 seasons at Goshen, another NLC school. He previously was the freshman boys’ coach at Fairfield in 1995-96, his alma mater. He then coached sixth-grade boys, freshman boys and JV girls at NorthWood from 1996-2003 before becoming girls’ head coach at Goshen.

Krebs has been named head coach of the 2025 girls' Junior All-Stars. He previously was honored as the NLC Coach of the Year in 2022, 2024 and 2025. He also was recognized as the Goshen News co-Coach of the Year in 2016 when at Goshen.

A 1991 graduate of Fairfield, Krebs averaged 15.6 points for a 12-10 team as a senior in basketball and also played baseball for the Falcons. He went to Illinois Valley Community College for two years, finishing third in the nation in free throw accuracy as a freshman and first in the nation as a sophomore when he was named third-team all-conference and won the team’s Most Inspirational Award. He then went to Grace College, where he was named a National Christian College Athletic Association second-team All-American as a senior in 1994-95.

Krebs completed his bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Grace in 1996. He earned a master’s degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan in 2006. He currently is in his eighth year as a teacher at Warsaw High School after previously teaching at Woodview Elementary in the NorthWood system and at Goshen Middle School and Goshen High School.

Krebs and his wife, Angela, are parents to Ashton, Kacilyn and Karson.

District 2: Brian Satterfield, Hamilton Southeastern

Brian Satterfield is the IBCA District 2 Coach of the Year after leading Hamilton Southeastern to a 27-1 campaign where his Royals were ranked No. 1 in Class 4A for much of the season and won Hoosier Crossroads Conference, Noblesville Sectional and Marion Regional titles.

Satterfield has compiled an 83-16 mark in four seasons as girls' coach at Hamilton Southeastern, including three HCC crowns (2023 co-championship and outright titles in 2024 and 2025). His girls' success comes after 20 seasons guiding the HSE boys, where he amassed a 322-151 record with three sectional titles and mentored Indiana Mr. Basketball honorees Gary Harris in 2012 and Zak Irvin in 2013.
The veteran coach previously was voted an IBCA boys' District Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2012, six times was honored as the Hoosier Crossroads Conference boys' Coach of the Year and twice has been selected HCC girls' Coach of the Year. He served the IBCA as a district representative from 2012-15 and currently is in the first year of a second three-year term.

Satterfield has been named an assistant coach for the 2025 girls' Indiana All-Stars, and he previously was an All-Star boys' assistant coach in 2015. He also was head coach for the 2010 Indiana Class All-Star Classic and the 2012 North-South Game as well as an assistant coach for the 2012 Nike Global Games in Washington, D.C.

A 1986 graduate of Plainfield High School, Satterfield averaged 8.9 points as a senior for a 20-6 regional champion. He went on to Wabash College, where he played three seasons for the Little Giants' varsity program and completed his bachelor's degree in business in 1990. After college, he worked for Met Life for three years before earning a teacher's certification through Indiana University in 1995. He then served as a boys' assistant coach at Madison, Triton Central, Avon and HSE before becoming the HSE boys' head coach in 2001-02.

Satterfield and his wife, Deb, are parents to Brooke, Nolan and Blair.

District 3: Hollie Anson-Eaves, South Knox

Hollie Anson-Eaves is the IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year after directing South Knox to a 28-2 record and the Class 2A state championship. Along the way, her Spartans also won the Corydon Central Invitational, the Blue Chip Conference, the North Knox Sectional, the Charlestown Regional and the Jasper Semi-State.

In 11 seasons, Anson-Eaves has a record of 177-110 with previous sectional titles in 2017 and 2019. She will be the head coach for the South Team in the 2025 Indiana All-Star girls’ Futures Game.

Anson-Eaves is a 2007 graduate of South Knox, where she was team MVP, team captain and honorable mention all-conference in basketball while also competing in softball. She went on to Brescia University in Kentucky, where she was a scorer, shooter and defensive stopper as a three-year captain and four-year player after redshirting in 2007-08.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and special education from Brescia in 2012 and now is in her 12th year as a director for Country Fun Daycare.
