HH Varsity Club Insider: Total (and I mean total) rebuild at South Vermillion

zhkcub6njymy4im2ejzv

South Vermillion girls - Departing Coach Matt Payne
CLINTON, Ind. -- (Updated 2/21)
Good Varsity Club member reports Coach, Matt Payne, has resigned (Approved by school board last night 2/20). The team finished 0-24 this past season and will graduate their leading scorers from a TEAM that averaged 17ppg. Total rebuild in store as the JV did not win a game and nothing coming from the middle school. There is currently not a feeder program in place and a school board that reportedly likes to micro manage the coaches. Current job openings only include Alternative Ed, HS Biology, but likely more later this spring. Varsity CLubber points out though that South Vermillion is closing down one of its elementary schools (Ernie Pyle) at the end of the school year and moving their 5th grade into the middle school (Also approved at last night’s school board meeting 2/20). Tough rebuild and job for sure.

Penn's Kristi Ulrich named head coach for Indiana girls All-Stars

State championship coach Kristi Ulrich of Penn has been named head coach for the 2023 Indiana girls' All-Stars, games director Mike Broughton announced Thursday (Feb. 15).

Ulrich will be assisted by Triton Central coach Bryan Graham and Garrett coach Bob Lapadot.

Players chosen to the 2023 girls' All-Stars will play three games in June -- one exhibition game against the Indiana Junior All-Stars as well as home-and-home contests against the Kentucky All-Stars.

Ulrich has compiled a 312-50 record in 14 seasons at Penn, including a Class 4A state championship in 2016 and a 16-7 mark in her team's recently completed season. Her tenure with the Kingsmen includes 11 sectional trophies, six regional titles, three semi-state crowns and state runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2014. Her teams also have captured 10 Northern Indiana Conference crowns.

A 1999 graduate of Mishawaka, Ulrich played basketball at Bethel College in Mishawaka and helped the Pilots to Christian College national championships in 2000 and 2003.

Ulrich served as a girls’ basketball assistant coach for four seasons at Mishawaka and two years at Penn before being named the Penn head coach in the spring of 2009. Ulrich was an IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year in 2014 and served as the 2014 head coach of the 2014 girls' Junior All-Stars.

Graham has posted a 299-65 record with eight sectional titles and two regional crowns in 15 seasons as coach at Triton Central. His Tigers -- 18-5 in 2022-23 -- also have won 12 Shelby County Tournament championships and 11 conference titles (two Mid-Hoosier Conference; nine Indiana Crossroads Conference). He also coached in the 2017 Hoosiers Reunion All-Star Classic.

Prior to leading the Triton Central girls, Graham coached one year of fifth-grade boys' basketball, two years of JV baseball, 10 years of middle school football and nine years of JV boys' basketball. He also was the Triton Central varsity girls' soccer coach for four years, was an athletic department assistant for about eight years and has been the Tigers' athletic director for the since 2015.

Graham is a 1995 graduate of Franklin Central High School, where he played basketball for the Flashes and coach Mark James. He went on to Indiana University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1999. He later earned a master's degree in curriculum, instruction and assessment from Walden University in 2010. He is in his 24th year as a teacher, coach and administrator at Triton Central.

Lapadot is 193-91 in 12 years as the Garrett coach, including a 14-12 ledger with a sectional title in recently completed season. His Railroaders have won three sectionals, one regional, four conference titles (two Allen County Athletic Conference, two Northeast Corner Conference) and posted an undefeated regular season at 20-0 in 2013-14. He was the KPC Media Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2021, an IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year in 2022 and served as head coach of the 2022 girls' Junior All-Stars.

A 1993 graduate of Garrett, Lapadot was a 10-sport letterman in football, basketball and baseball. He excelled in baseball, twice being named team MVP, four times all-conference and all-area. As a senior, he was selected area Player of the Year and chosen for the Indiana All-Stars Home Run Derby.

He matriculated to IPFW, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1998. While in college, he returned to Garrett as a girls’ basketball assistant coach and just completed his 28th season in the program. He served as the Railroaders’ varsity assistant for 16 seasons before becoming the head coach in 2011-12. Lapadot also was the Railroaders’ head track coach for eight years, advancing athletes to the State Finals in five of those seasons. He currently is in his 22nd year of teaching eighth-grade social studies at Garrett Middle School.

The Junior-Senior exhibition game is set for June 7 at a site to be announced. The first game against Kentucky will be June 9 at the Owensboro Sportscenter in Owensboro, Ky. The final game against Kentucky will be June 10 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. All three dates will be doubleheaders with the IndyStar Indiana boys' All-Stars.

Rosters for the 2023 Indiana girls' All-Stars, boys' All-Stars, girls' Junior All-Stars and boys' Junior All-Stars will be announced later.

The Indiana Junior All-Stars will play two girl-boy doubleheaders this year -- June 4 against the Kentucky Junior All-Stars at Jeffersonville and June 7 against the Indiana seniors at a site to be announced.

New to the 2023 All-Star program is a Futures Games doubleheader, both on June 10 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. These games, for girls at noon and boys at 2:00 p.m., each will feature two Indiana teams in a North-South format. Rosters for the girls' Futures Game were announced separately today. Rosters for the boys' Futures Game will be announced later.

The Indiana All-Stars program was founded in 1939 when the Indiana boys' All-Stars played the state champion Frankfort Hot Dogs. The series with Kentucky began in 1940, and the girls' portion of the All-Stars was added in 1976. The Junior All-Stars, boys and girls, were added in 1996. The All-Star senior girls have played Kentucky every year since 1976, except 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The All-Star senior boys have played Kentucky in all but three years since 1940 -- 1943 (World War II), 1944 (World War II) and 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic).

The Indiana Senior girls lead 52-40 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior girls lead 41-10 in games against the Indiana Junior girls. The Indiana Junior girls lead 10-1 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior boys lead 103-44 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior boys lead 41-10 in games against the Indiana Junior boys. The Indiana Junior boys lead 7-4 in their series with Kentucky.

The Indiana portion of the All-Star Games is organized and produced by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. The Indianapolis Star, with its IndyStar brand, is the title sponsor.

IBCA Players of the Week from Penn, Munster, Kokomo,South central, Bethany Christian, Lapel & Forest park

Week-16 of the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week Program Sees Semi-State Champions Crowned, Others Preparing For Their Sectional Matchups

It seems like a repeat each week this season, but there were a number of nice performances, 1000-point scorers, a 2000-point scorer, plus conference championships being decided on the boys’ side. While in Saturday’s girls’ happenings, 32 teams were whittled down to eight, with Bethany Christian, Corydon Central, Fairfield, Fishers, Lanesville, and Lapel each seeking for their first state title. Forest Park eyes their second, and their second in a row, while Bedford North Lawrence is looking for number-5. All-in-all, seven players were chosen this week for the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week honor in each of their respective districts.

Penn Senior Markus Burton, Munster Senior Brandon Trilli, Kokomo Junior Flory Bidunga, South Central (Elizabeth) Sophomore Cole Thomas, Bethany Christian Junior Mariah Stoltzfus, Lapel Freshman Laniah Wills, and Forest Park Senior Amber Tretter are being honored as winners for Feb. 13-Feb. 18 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Burton and Trilli share boys’ honors, while Stoltzfus is the girls’ honoree in District-1. Bidunga and Wills are the boys’ and girls’ recipients, respectively, in District-2. Thomas is the boys’ winner, and Tretter is the girls’ winner in District-3.

Penn Senior Markus Burton has been electric throughout his career, and last week he achieved two notable marks, scoring his 2000th career point and helping the Kingsmen to an undefeated (11-0) Northern Indiana Conference season. In an 86-65 win at Plymouth, the University of Notre Dame commit scored 34 points, grabbed eight rebounds, tallied five assists, and stole the ball twice. He was also an efficient 15-23 from the field. During a lopsided win at Elkhart, the 6-0 guard scored another 30 points in limited time, he posted a double-double with 11 rebounds, plus he added another four assists and five steals to his career totals. The Kingsmen are now 21-1 on the season and ranked #2 in the state.

For the six consecutive year, the Munster Mustangs have won the Northwest Crossroads Conference with a perfect 5-0 record, and Senior Brandon Trilli has been a big part of this season’s success. They finished their conference season Friday night with a 68-51 win at Andrean. Trilli was 14-16 from the field and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line, on his way to 33 points. He also pulled down eight rebounds, six of which were at the offensive end, and he collected three steals. If that’s not enough, earlier in the week the 6-5 forward eclipsed the 1000-point mark, joining his father, Mike (1989), as one of only eight Mustangs to ever do so. It was during an 84-66 win at Lake Station, and the younger Trilli finished with 30 points on 11-14 shooting, 2-2 from long range, plus a 6-7 performance at the line. The Northern Michigan University commit added 11 rebounds, plus he dished out five assists.

Bethany Christian Junior Mariah Stoltzfus might stand just 5-2, but she often makes the biggest impact on the court, as she did Saturday in the Class 1A North Semi-State. The Junior point guard helped the Lady Bruins to two victories by a total of nine points, and she made sure to save her heroics for the end. In the first game, Bethany Christian defeated Washington Township, 55-50. Stoltzfus was on target, making 7-12 shots, 3-3 from deep, plus a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. She finished with 23 points, 19 of which came after halftime. She added five rebounds, four assists, and three steals to her effort. In the nightcap, Stoltzfus scored 21 points, but again she was instrumental late, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter, including the final six points from the free throw line, as the Lady Bruins knocked off a very good Tri team, 58-54. Once again, the point guard contributed in other ways, adding a pair of rebounds and dishing out seven assists. This Saturday will be Bethany Christian’s first ever State Finals appearance, as the 24-3 Lady Bruins take on Lanesville (27-2).

Flory Bidunga has definitely made his mark on Kokomo basketball the last two seasons, and the Junior big man isn’t done yet. Last week, the 6-10 front-liner scored 23 points and grabbed 19 rebounds (12 offensive) in a 66-41 win at Western. Bidunga was 10-14 from the floor, plus he added a pair of assists and a pair of steals. Friday night, the Junior post helped the Wildkats to a huge 69-52 North Central Conference win at Anderson over a good Indians team, helping Kokomo to a perfect 9-0 conference record this season. In this matchup, Bidunga was a perfect 13-13 from the field, he grabbed 14 caroms, handed out another pair of assists, plus he blocked four shots.

Though she’s just a rookie, Lapel Freshman Laniah Wills has been a walking double-double all season. Saturday, the 6-0 forward lived up to the billing, as the Lady Bulldogs earned their first ever trip to Gainbridge Fieldhouse and the Class 2A State Finals. To begin her day, Wills was key in a low-scoring, 44-32 win against Andrean. The Freshman scored 24 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and blocked a pair of shots for the Bulldogs in victory. She returned to the court Saturday night and posted her second double-double of the day in a 13-point, 12-rebound performance, as Lapel advanced with a 51-38 win over a feisty Central Noble bunch. As the Class 2A North representative, the 22-7 Bulldogs will take on defending Class 2A State Champion Forest Park (25-3) Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Cole Thomas of South Central (Elizabeth) put together a really nice week, giving local fans a taste of a bright future. The 6-1 guard began his week with a 22-point performance in a 69-60 Southern Conference win at New Washington. He was a near-perfect 8-9 from the free throw line, plus he added six rebounds, three assists, and two steals, helping South Central to a winning record in their conference this season. Saturday they returned to action, and in a 70-48 win against Springs Valley, the Sophomore guard poured in 32 points on 13-20 shooting. Thomas was 2-5 from deep, 4-4 from the line, plus he posted a double-double with 14 rebounds, seven of which were at the offensive end of the floor. Add to that three assists and three steals, and the youngster posted a nice all-around outing.

Forest Park Senior Amber Tretter did everything in her power to help the Lady Rangers to their second consecutive Class 2A State Finals appearance, following a pair of impressive performances Saturday. The 6-1 forward scored 21 points, including knocking down all six of her free throw attempts, in helping Forest Park defeat Greencastle, 65-48, in the Semi-State opener. The Senior forward also snagged 14 caroms and blocked a pair of shots in the win. In the evening contest, the Miami University commit stepped up big-time, scoring 24 of her team’s 41 points, as the Lady Rangers escaped a very good North Knox group, 41-36. Tretter again put together a double-double with 11 rebounds. She will attempt to help Forest Park win their second title in three tries (they also made an appearance in 2000).

This is the 15th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program, but just the third season it is being presented by Franciscan Health, a corporate sponsor of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

IHSAA Boys Sectional Draw!

Sectional games are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 28, and run through Saturday, March 4 with regionals on Saturday, March 11. This year’s state tournament, like the girls tournament, has a different format than previous years as the regional round and semi-state round have essentially switched.

The regional is now a single-game championship, and the semi-state becomes a two-game affair with the winner advancing to the state championship game. The previous format of a two-round regional and a single semi-state game had been in place since 2002.

Historic Background on Westphalia High School Wildcats

A basketball friend asked me to look up some info on Westphalia High School - Now part of North Knox High. For those not from southern Indiana, Vincennes is the county seat there. He attended grade school there and was curious about its high school basketball history. I sent this to him, but thought I'd share it here, because why not. Nobody else cares about this sort of thing :)

++++

Westphalia’s last varsity team wore green and white and used the mascot Wildcats, but there were those that unofficially referred to them as the “Cheestowners” because the town had two cheese factories that shipped cheese to much of the midwest.

Westphalia High School competed in the Knox County Conference.

The Wildcats participated in only one IHSAA tourney - 1927

1927 Vincennes 14-team Sectional played at Adams Coliseum: Monroe City 42, Westphalia 12 (Called just Vincennes Coliseum at that time)

1928 was the last season Westphalia fielded a team.

Westphalia never had its own gym. Instead using the gym at Sandborn High School for home games. Practices took place on a cinder court behind the school, and additional practices were held on a dirt court located behind the Mobil Gas Station.

Westphalia maintained a school thru grade 8 for several years with kiddos matriculating to Edwardsport High School (Nicknamed the Powers which is pretty cool) until it ultimately consolidated into what is now North Knox. During the 1947-48 season, Westphalia grade school captured the prestigious Knox County basketball championship. 1959 was last year for any school in town.

A guy named Herb Pepmeier was recognized by the Vincennes Sun-Commercial paper in 1997 as the all-time greatest player (Career leading scorer) for Westphalia. No numbers were offered, but he was a junior during their one Sectional year and apparently played his senior year in 1928 when they did not enter the tourney.

Well, they actually fielded a team several years. Played a pretty full schedule of Knox County Conference teams apparently. However, they only chose to enter the IHSAA tourney once. That was not uncommon for very small schools during that decade.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Absolute mess at Angola but maybe with some Tunnel light

tvbbv5f4nkty6eb7ot45

Angola girls - Departing Coach Nick Burlingame
ANGOLA, Ind. -- (Updated 2/16) WANE15 is reporting Coach Burlingame has resigned after three seasons with Angola (45-27.) WANE had previously reported in November 2021 there was an investigation into the girls basketball program at Angola. Two assistant coaches resigned their positions at that time. Police are reportedly involved but details are few. Goes without saying this is a mess with countless and many varied theories. Here is a link to the latest - Assuming story will be updated: https://www.wane.com/news/local-news/head-coach-of-angola-girls-basketball-team-resigns/ All that being said, from the perspective of this column the focus is for the incoming coach, and beyond all the mess, the Hornets finished 11-11 last season. IF all return that are expected to, from a basketball standpoint, the Hornets will graduate just two seniors, and return six strong contributors including PG duties and post defense and rebounding. JV team described as pretty strong. Finished 15-6, 9-1 in Northeast Corner Conference. Won last seven games of the season. Looking further down the line, 8th grade said to be decent. 7th and 6th grades both pretty strong. Job openings currently few and far between but several more are expected later this spring. Currently just HS French, ESL, HS Spanish.

IBCA Players of the Week from: Michigan City, Attucks, Bloomfield, Central Noble, Hamilton Hts, and Indian Creek!

Briscoe, Hodges, & Vice Headline Week-15 of the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week Awards

The boys’ season is beginning to wind down, with conference championships being decided, and there were a number of explosive performances throughout the state, not limited to just the Week-15 winners. In girls’ action, 64 teams were cut in half, as the IHSAA turned to a new Regional format this year. All in all, six players were selected as Week-15 IBCA/Franciscan Health Players of the Week.

Michigan City Senior Jamie Hodges Jr., Crispus Attucks Sophomore Dezmon Briscoe, Bloomfield Freshman Blake Neill, Central Noble Senior Madison Vice, Hamilton Heights Junior Camryn Runner, and Indian Creek Junior Lauren Foster are being honored as winners for Feb. 6-Feb. 11 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Hodges is the boys’ recipient, and Vice is the girls’ recipient in District-1. Briscoe and Runner take home boy’s and girls’ honors, respectively, in District-2. Neill was a standout boy, while Foster was a standout girl, in District-3.

Michigan City Senior Jamie Hodges Jr. had as impressive of a week as there has been during the 2022-2023 season. The 5-9 guard helped the Wolves to a trio of wins last week, highlighted by a 50-point outburst in their tight, 75-74 win against Gary Bowman. In that game, Hodges was 16-25 from the field,

5-8 from deep, and 13-15 from the free throw line. He added five rebounds, a pair of assists, and three steals to his totals. Later in the week, he posted a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds in a 78-57 Duneland Athletic Conference win against Lake Central. He also handed out six assists and stole the ball four times in that contest. And in a matchup with Calumet, the Senior guard scored another 33 points on 15-20 shooting, while dishing out five more assists, and picking up six more thefts in a runaway win.

Senior Madison Vice is definitely leaving her mark on the Central Noble program, and now she has them just two wins away from a trip to Indianapolis. In their Regional matchup Saturday against South Central (Union Mills), a 64-52 win for the Lady Cougars, Vice posted a double-double with 33 points and 14 rebounds. She was an efficient 9-13 from the field, and an impressive 15-19 from the charity stripe. The 5-6 guard also chipped in six assists and four steals. She is headed to play at Siena Heights University next season.

Crispus Attucks Sophomore Dezmon Briscoe is making noise early in his career, and the 6-7 forward had a pair of dominant performances last week. First, in a comfortable Greater Indianapolis Conference win at Riverside, Briscoe scored 30 points and grabbed 11 caroms to post his first double-double of the week. Then, in another conference win, this time an 81-54 outcome against Tindley, the Sophomore forward again went for 30 points but pulled down a massive 20 rebounds. He was a solid

11-16 from the field and 3-6 from deep in this game, and he blocked nine total shots throughout the week.

Junior Camryn Runner has the Lady Huskies of Hamilton Heights back in the Semi-State for the first time since 2012-2013, following a hard-fought 44-40 triumph over a strong Norwell Lady Knights program. The 5-9 guard was highly accurate, making 6-8 shots from the field, 3-3 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line, scoring 25 of their 44 points. She also snagged six rebounds and managed to block a pair of shots in the big victory.

For the second consecutive week, we travel to Bloomfield for the boys’ District-3 winner, as Cardinal Freshman Blake Neill was absolutely on fire in their lone contest of the week. In a 73-45 win against a good Washington Hatchet squad, the 6-1 guard poured in 36 points on 12-18 shooting. More impressively, 11-17 of those shots were let go from beyond the 3-point line, and he scored a blistering 19 points in the first quarter alone. The rookie made his only 2-point attempt, his only free throw attempt, and grabbed three rebounds as well in this standout performance.

The Indian Creek Lady Braves are loaded and deep, but Junior Lauren Foster has been putting up numbers all season. The 5-7 guard was up to the task once again Saturday, as she helped the Braves to a 63-31 Regional win over Purdue Polytechnic. Foster buried 10-17 shots from the floor, including 2-4 3-pointers, scoring 22 points in the matchup. She also grabbed seven rebounds, delivered eight assists, and picked up a trio of steals, as Indian Creek won its first girls’ Regional title ever.

Mitchell girls - Departing Coach Tim Haworth
MITCHELL, Ind. -- (Updated 2/13) WBIW is reporting that veteran Coach Tim Haworth has announced he is retiring from both teaching and coaching at the end of the school year. His remarkable 40-year teaching/coaching career is documented in this link. https://www.wbiw.com/2023/02/10/lad...-announces-retirement-from-coaching-teaching/ As far as what incoming coach will likely have on tap, the most recent Bluejackets finished 5-18. 6-0 sr-2-b Julian Bond leads a set of post players with plenty of height set to return, but most of the scoring graduates this spring. Underclass PG also on books to return, but will have to take on a much greater role. JV reported as decent. Name to board 3/13.

Coach Thomas has had some talent-lean seasons with the Rebels winning just 6 games in 4our seasons. This year’s campaign didn’t go much better as they finished just 2-17. I will flesh this opening out more, but agood Varsity Club member reports there is already a MS coach with an inside track on this.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- (Updated 2/13) The Evansville Courier and Press is reporting Coach Loveless has resigned after six seasons with the Panthers. The Panthers finished third in the SIAC at 52.7 points per game, the highest average for the program since 2010. Several Teaching positions expected but not known yet given the calendar. EVSC is offering something called an early offer contract tho. Some internal interest expected.

HH Varsity Club Insider: New Albany boys

o8tnl6fdnxajrh6chevk

New Albany boys – Departing Coach Jim Shannon
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – (Updated 2/10)
Veteran Coach Jim Shannon announced at the beginning of this past season that this would be his last. Nearly 40 years and over 600 wins (25 years at NA) are a hall of fame legacy for sure. Maybe more importantly to NA faithful, he is 21-12 vs hated Jeffersonville. This year’s Bulldogs, while competitive, have floated around the .500 mark most of the season. One thing that marks this year’s roster as a bit different from typical New Albany teams is that it is not necessarily top heavy with senior leadership. That may bode well for incoming coach. Plus good Varsity Club member reports JV squad is pretty solid. NA has one of the larger coaching staffs around, and plenty of rumors swirling about internal interest. Still others expect external candidates to be in the mix.
