Players of the Week from Huntington North, Valpo, Kokomo, Triton Central, Eastern Hancock, and Greensburg!

Huntington North senior Ethan Zahn poured in a school-record 42 points in one game while Valparaiso junior Lillian Barnes tallied 40 points in another while averaging 27.0 points in two contests during the week of Jan. 6-11. Thus, they headline this week’s group of honorees in the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week program for 2024-25.

Zahn and Barnes along with Kokomo senior Zion Bellamy, Triton Central junior Eli Sego, Eastern Hancock sophomore Kenzie Koch and Greensburg sophomore Claire Larrison have been selected as winners in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Also, the Fort Wayne Bishop Luers boys’ team and the Lanesville girls’ team each has been cited as an IBCA/Ballogy Team of the Week in another part of this season’s IBCA recognition program.

Players of the Week are chosen by IHSAA district – Zahn and Barnes for District 1, Bellamy and Koch for District 2, and Sego and Larrison for District 3. A single team for each gender from the entire state is cited as a Team of the Week in that portion of the program. Players and teams are recognized based on all performances in a Monday through Saturday week.

Zahn added five rebounds, five assists and five steals to his record-breaking scoring total as Huntington North defeated Southwood 74-47 to improve to 5-5 in its only game of the week. The 6-1 guard sank 15-of-23 from the field, including 6-of-12 3-pointers, plus 6-of-8 free throws en route to his total. His 42 points eclipsed the previous Vikings’ record of 40 points shared by Adam Thompson and Hunter Hollowell. Thompson scored 40 against Indianapolis Broad Ripple on Jan. 26, 2002. Hollowell scored 40 against Mississinewa on Nov. 26, 2016.

Bellamy averaged 26.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals in leading Class 4A No. 18 Kokomo (10-2) to two victories. The 5-8 guard opened with 22 points, two rebounds, five assists and six steals in a 106-45 decision over Logansport. He followed with 30 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals as the Wildkats defeated Fort Wayne Snider 85-83. In the two games, Bellamy converted 19-of-32 field goals, 10-of-16 3-pointers and 4-of-5 free throws.

Sego tallied 27 points, five rebounds, six assists, five steals and two blocks as Triton Central knocked off Waldron 76-58 in its only game of the week, a first-round contest in the weather-delayed Shelby County Tournament. The Tigers improved to 6-5 with the result and played Morristown on Monday evening in the tournament final. Sego hit 8-of-16 shots, 5-of-9 from deep and 6-of-6 freebies against Waldron.

Barnes averaged 27.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 9.0 steals and 2.0 blocks in keying Valparaiso (11-7) to two triumphs. The 5-10 junior netted 14 points with five rebounds, seven assists, seven steals and one block as the Vikings walloped Portage 74-21. She then produced 40 points, nine rebounds, five assists, 11 steals and three blocks in a 72-45 decision over Harrison (West Lafayette). Barnes, previously an IBCA Player of the Week on Nov. 11-16, was 17-of-27 from the field, 2-of-4 on 3-pointers and 4-of-7 on free throws against Harrison. Over two games, she was 24-of-40 on field goals, 2-of-7 from deep and 4-of-8 on freebies.

Koch tallied 31.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.5 steals and 3.0 blocks over two games as No. 9 Eastern Hancock improved to 15-2. The 5-9 guard totaled 31 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and four blocks in a 59-21 victory over Blue River Valley. She followed with 31 points, eight rebounds, two assists, four steals and two blocks as the Royals topped Union County 53-32. For the week, Koch was 22-of-50 from the floor, 4-of-12 on 3-pointers and 14-of-15 on charity tosses. She was a previous IBCA Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 4-9.

Larrison helped 3A No. 1 Greensburg move to 17-0 in its only game of the week, a 71-32 decision over Franklin County. The 5-10 guard totaled 22 points with nine rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Pirates remained undefeated. For the game, she was 8-of-10 from the field, 1-of-2 on 3-pointers and 5-of-5 on free throws.

The Bishop Luers boys, ranked second in Class 2A, went 3-0 last week to improve to 10-1 for the season. Freshman Jayden Moore scored 13 points and junior Carmani Davis added 10 points as the Knights defeated Churubusco 87-33. Davis tallied 13 points, senior Danny Kelly netted 11 points and senior Drelyn Truesdale had 10 points as coach Seth Coffing’s team beat Fort Wayne Concordia 61-41. The Lanesville girls, ranked 14th in 2A and the two-time defending Class A champion, defeated 4A No. 12 Floyd Central 36-34 in their only game of the week. Junior Madelyn Magner sank a rebound basket to provide the winning margin for coach Angie Hinton’s Eagles, now 11-2-1 for the season.

Chants of "Fire Woodson" break out at Assembly Hall

[BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Having recently returned from winter break, Indiana students made it clear that they were deeply disappointed with the state of the basketball program throughout the course of a 94-69 loss to Illinois on Tuesday night at Assembly Hall.

They started chanting "Fire Woodson" midway through the first half as the Hoosiers trailed by as many as 30 points and restarted the chant multiple times even as another section of the arena tried (and failed) to drown them out with chants of "Go IU" during one timeout.]

The incident happened on Saturday around 11:20 a.m. at the Horace Porter School in Columbia.

The victim told responding officers that he was attending a girls’ youth basketball game at the school and said he was involved in an argument with the opposing team’s coach.]

All-Time Indiana high school Quadruple and Quintuple Doubles!

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Washington's Kira Reynolds recently pulled off what no Hoosier high school player has ever done before - a quintuple double in an Indiana varsity basketball game. Her remarkable 14 points, 18 rebounds, 12 assists, 11 steals AND 10 blocks vs. New Prairie on Jan. 4 of this year sparked several conversations among basketball historians regarding her accomplishment.

To date, it has been determined that no other player, boys or girls, has accomplished this. The conversation then turned to attempting to document those that have come close. Admittedly, this will be a tough one to track as stats weren't always kept as closely as they are today, and unfortunately some may have simply been lost to history. However, thanks to the efforts of several contributors, most notably Pat McKee, a solid first effort has been made. Feel free to contact me if you have an addition, correction, or even just a lead on this brand new category of the Record Book.

Players of the Week from: SB Wash, Maconaquah, North Mont, Brownsburg, Jeff, and EV Central!

Kira Reynolds recorded the first quintuple double in Indiana high school basketball history last Saturday, and the South Bend senior headlines this week’s group of honorees in the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week program for 2024-25.

The 6-3 Reynolds totaled 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go with 18 rebounds, 12 assists, 11 steals and 10 blocked shots as the Class 4A No. 5 Panthers defeated New Prairie 85-12 in their only game during the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 4. Thus, Reynolds along with Maconaquah senior Josiah Ball, North Montgomery senior Kelby Harwood, Brownsburg senior Avery Gordon, Jeffersonville senior Michael Cooper and Evansville Central junior Maddy Shirley have been selected as winners in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Also, the Ben Davis boys’ team and the Bellmont girls’ team each has been cited as an IBCA/Ballogy Team of the Week in another part of this season’s IBCA recognition program.

Players of the Week are chosen by IHSAA district – Ball and Reynolds for District 1, Harwood and Gordon for District 2, and Cooper and Shirley for District 3. A single team for each gender from the entire state is cited as a Team of the Week in that portion of the program. Players and teams are recognized based on all performances in a Monday through Saturday week.

Reynolds, sister of SBW junior Steven Reynolds III (last week’s boys’ District 1 winner), is averaging 16.6 points, 13.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 3.5 steals and 6.5 blocks this season for her 15-1 team. For her career, through last Saturday, the Purdue recruit has totaled 1,325 points, 1,052 rebounds, 325 assists, 187 steals and 527 blocks in 92 varsity contests.

Her quintuple double is believed to be the sixth ever nationally by a high school player. The previous girls’ “five-double feats” were accomplished by Tamika Catchings of Duncanville (Texas) in 1997, Alexis Pope of Ganesha (Calif.) in 2003, Alex Montgomery of Tacoma Lincoln (Wash.) in 2007 and Aimee Ortner of Northern Lehigh (Pa.) in 2012. The only known boys’ quintuple double was by Marqus Blakely of Metuchen (N.J.) in 2006.

Another SBW girls’ player did have a quadruple-double on Jan. 31, 2015. That was recorded by then-senior guard Tia Murphy, who tallied 31 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals against Fort Wayne Snider. Murphy’s effort is one of at least 19 Indiana high school quadruple doubles – 16 by girls and three by boys.

Ball poured in 37 points to go with nine rebounds, three assists and four steals as the Maconaquah boys beat Whitko 75-50 in their only game of the week. The 6-5 forward converted 11-of-21 field goals, 1-of-4 3-pointers and 14-of-16 free throws as the Braves improved to 6-1. The Bethel University commit is averaging 30.1 points this season, is his school all-time leading scorer and pushed his career total to 1,575 points.

Harwood averaged 27.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in three games for the North Montgomery boys (3-6). The 6-3 guard tallied 28 points, eight rebounds, two assists and four steals in a 57-51 loss to Delphi in the first round of the Delphi Indiana Kitchen Classic. Harwood followed with 28 points, eight rebounds, one assist and three steals in a 54-47 loss to Pioneer. He came back with 25 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals in a 66-41 victory over North Newton. In the three games, Harwood was 34-of-59 from the floor and 13-of-24 from the line.

Gordon averaged 31.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in leading the 4A No. 10 Brownsburg girls (12-3) to the championship of the Carol Tumey Invitational. The 6-6 center opened with 30 points, six rebounds and one blocked shot as the Bulldogs knocked off Jeffersonville 82-56. The Purdue signee followed with 33 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and six blocks in a 66-48 upset of 4A No. 6 Center Grove, the tournament host. Gordon, previously an IBCA Player of the Week honoree on Nov. 25-30, made 26-of-36 field goals, one 3-pointer and 10-of-15 free throws in the two games.

Cooper averaged 27.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 5.5 steals in keying the 4A No. 9 Jeffersonville boys (6-5) to a 1-1 week. The 6-3 guard poured in 34 points with five rebounds, four assists and six steals in an 82-71 victory over Louisville Eastern. The Wright State signee also totaled 21 points, one rebounds, four assists and five steals in a 70-64 setback to 4A No. 2 Lawrence North. For the week, he converted 22-of-36 shots, 2-of-7 3-pointers and 9-of-12 free throws. Cooper is a second-time winner of IBCA Player of the Week, also being recognized the week of Nov. 25-30.

Shirley had averages of 29.0 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in picking up her second IBCA Player of the Week award for the 3A No. 6 Evansville Central girls. The 6-1 forward – previously recognized Dec. 2-7 – scored 29 points with 13 rebounds, two assists, four steals and one block in a 49-42 decision over Bedford North Lawrence. She followed with 29 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and one block as the Bears moved to 13-3 with a 67-33 victory over Southridge. In the two games, she was 23-of-34 on field goals and 12-of-14 on free throws.

Ben Davis, ranked No. 14 in 4A, is the boys’ Team of the Week after going 4-0 (and beating two ranked teams) to win the championship of the Bob Wettig Memorial Tournament in Richmond. Junior Jashawn Ladd scored 18 points and senior Tavion Williams netted 12 points in a 61-43 victory over Centerville. Ladd tallied 15 points, Williams 12 points and senior Jahmir Avery had 10 points as the Giants beat 3A No. 9 and previously unbeaten NorthWood 52-40. Ladd scored 12 points, Williams and junior Sherman Moss each tallied 11 points, and senior Justin Parks chipped in 10 points in a 55-41 decision over 2A No. 3 and previously unbeaten Fort Wayne Bishop Luers. And Williams scored 15 points and senior Kaleb Milan added 14 points as coach Don Carlisle’s crew improved to 8-2 overall and claimed the tournament title with a 51-43 victory over Shelbyville.

Bellmont, ranked eighth in 3A, moved to 14-1 and claimed girls’ Team of the Week accolades after defeating two ranked opponents for coach Andy Heim. Senior Emily Bleke scored 17 points, while freshman Ashley Bleke added 12 points and freshman Marianne Bleke had nine points in a 54-52 decision over 2A No. 10 and previously unbeaten Eastside. Ashley Bleke then scored 17 points and Emily Bleke tallied 15 points as the Braves defeated 2A No. 8 Bluffton 53-47.

Hoosier Gym Journey - Photo Features Fading Gyms

The gentleman that runs Hoosier Gym Journey (Online documented effort to visit all 400 Indiana high school gyms) has added a feature entitled Fading Gyms.

[These are all gyms that I have visited that are too unrecognizable from their glory days of hosting high school basketball games to rank. Some have fallen victim to extensive remodeling, fire, other natural disasters, or simply the passage of time. Though the memory of their heyday is fading, they still deserve recognition, which I've tried to do here.]

Good for tenth all-time which is noteworthy itself. However, I’m guessing it’s the only performance listed below that also includes ZERO turnovers in the same game. Truly impressive!

Seeking help with updating the Oldest Gymnasiums still in Use

Seeking help with updating the oldest gymnasiums still in use. I try to have a top ten for each category in hte Record Book, and it was pointed out to me I still had Howe Military and Ft. Wayne North listed - both no longer in use.

The oldest I know of are Elkhart Northside Gymnasium serving Elhart built in 1954 and Southport Fieldhouse built in 1958. That seems a very big jump from 1928 to 1954. There have to be some older than 1954. Any help or leads?

Oldest Gymnasium Still in Use

1924: The Cave, Mishawaka
1925: Rivet Gymnasium, Vincennes
1925: Ball Gymnasium, Muncie Burris
1926: Memorial Gymnasium, Rushville
1926: The Birdcage, Washington Catholic
1928: Muncie Fieldhouse
1928: Reuben D. Behlmer Memorial Gym, Indianapolis Tech
1954: Elkhart Northside Gymnasium
1958: Southport Fieldhouse

Freshman phenom

Any outstanding freshman out there getting ones attention?

North Vermillion Freshmen, Teagan Leonard, last week tied a school record with eight 3's in a game, but then followed that up with scoring 44 points this past Tuesday.
Very high basketball IQ, plays the game the right way, but an even better person with high standards that works hard in the classroom and on the court.

Hall of Fame’s new addition is glorious

I attended the Hall of Fame’s grand re-opening the other day, and it was beyond great. 6000 sq feet addition is more than worth the drive for any good Hoosier. Several new exhibits, and they have redone some of the classics too. Plus admission is now free to everyone forever thanks to a sponsorship by Henry County Health. It is a true gem, and the only one like it in the entire country.

Lanesville girls wind up on short end of officials' decision

Class 1A No. 2 Borden 30, Class 2A No. 7 Lanesville 29 ... or is it?

With 43.4 left, Borden leads 29-25. Borden player misses first free throw and hits the second (30-25). Lanesville's Hadley Crosier buries a three (30-28) at the other end, but scoreboard incorrectly counts it as a two (30-27).

Borden inbounds the ball and player misses a layup; Lanesville gets the rebound.

Lanesville comes down and hits a long two with :06 left and scoreboard corrects the earlier "two" to a three on the shot, making it 30-30, which is what it should have been.

Borden inbounds and time expires with a 30-30 score showing. Officials say, nope. It's 30-29. Ball game over.

Officials check the book before the game and they are known to come to the scorer's table during the game. It's my understanding that scoring errors can be addressed until the officials leave the confines of the court so on something like this, a visit was warranted. Books had it 30-30.

It's a shame the game ended on a controversial note because it was two gritty clubs in a tourney atmosphere in mid-December.
