Should Indiana High School teams be able to play out of state in Vacation Destinations, during regular season?

Why is the IHSAA so hung up on this? What are your thoughts? To me it seems like a good time for team bonding outside and finding some different competition.

I mean travel ball kids are going to Disney , Myrtle Beach, etc, etc,,,,, before they are 13 years old....

This past week many cheerleading squads, throughout the state of Indiana went to down to Orlando for competition; and also had some days to go to Disney or Universal. That seems like a great memory for them.........I know some of you are going to say cheerleading is not a sanctioned sport; but they are almost at every IHSAA home game and are an important piece to each schools athletic program.

HH Varsity Club Insider: North Put to make it 4 new Coaches in 4 Years

North Putnam girls - Departing Coach Curtis Lawrence
ROACHDALE, Ind. -- (Update 2/20)
Not sure what’s in the water at North Put, but can now confirm the Cougars will have their fourth new coach in as many years. LAst season North Put was 9-14 and competitive in most contests. That’s been the case for the most part throughout this run of new leaders. Sometimes we see a program that simply struggles and because of all the losing, it’s difficult to maintain consistent head coaching, but that is not the issue in Roachdale. A good Varsity Clubber reports that on paper next season appears to be more of the same from a talent standpoint. The negative first - Five seniors graduate including leading scorer (12 PPG.) However, same report emphasizes a pretty decent jr-2-b class and a collective group of underclassmen that logged plenty of varsity time last campaign. The bulk of the ball-handling should be back as are three regulars that netted about 7-8 an outing. 5-10 sr-2-b Rose Haste led the team in rebounding (8 RPG) without playing a true post. Incoming coach will likely deal with conference change on the horizon: Western Indiana Conference for next season, but New Conference starting 2025/26 School Year: South Put, Greencastle, Crawfordsville, Southmont, North Montgomery, Frankfort and Webo - Conference not yet named. Varsity Clubber reports a possible name as North Put asst Kelly Windmiller (teaches elementary within the North Put system) She handled substitutions last season. Current openings include: HS Math, Counseling Position, Eled, and Sped. More expected

HH Varsity Club Insider: Jeffersonville job officially open..sort of

Jeffersonville girls - Departing Coach Taylor Sykes (Interim)
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- (Updated 2/14)
Jeff girls job is officially posted as open on their district website (Greater Clark County Schools.) However, a good Varsity Club member points to this listing being just procedural. Apparently they are going to lift Taylor Sykes' interim tag.

Player of the Week from: Clay, Luers, Kokomo, Danville, Switzerland Co, and Scottsburg

While the girls were eliminating 32 teams during the 1-game Regional format on Saturday, the boys spent the week lighting up scoreboards and torching nets with incredible shooting nights. In fact, there were several 40-point performances throughout the state, including 44 points by Jennings County Junior Carter Kent and a 40-point performance by Wawasee Senior Collin Ziebarth that warrant a mention. As the boys’ regular season has a week and a half remaining, 32 girls’ teams will participate in the Semi-State this coming weekend. With that said, six more ballplayers have been selected as the Week-15 IBCA/Franciscan Health Players of the week.

South Bend Clay Sophomore Tyrese Jones, Bishop Luers Sophomore Miley Wareing, Kokomo Senior Karson Rogers, Danville Community Junior Emma Ancelet, Switzerland County Junior Cam Craig, and Scottsburg Junior Ellie Richardson are being honored for Feb. 5-Feb. 10 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Jones and Wareing collect boys’ and girls’ honors, respectively, in Disrict-1. Rogers is the boys’ winner and Ancelet is the girls’ winner in District-2. Craig and Richardson are the boys’ and girls’ recipients, respectively, in District-3.

Following a nice rookie season, South Bend Clay Sophomore Tyrese Jones has been much better in his second year at the helm for the Colonials. Last week, the 5-11 guard was dynamic at the point. In a pair of wins over South Bend Career Academy and Elkhart, Jones averaged 33.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 4.5 steals per game, while shooting a sizzling 61% (25-41) from the field, 46% (6-13) from 3-point range, and 91% (10-11) from the line.

Bishop Luers Sophomore Miley Wareing came up huge for the Knights, as they claimed their 13th Regional Championship, but their first since 2013. In a 57-46 triumph over a competitive Lafayette Central Catholic squad, the 6-2 post was 8-13 from the field and 8-9 from the free throw line, scoring 24 points. She posted a double-double with her 10 rebounds, she handed out 3 assists, collected a pair of steals, and she blocked a shot. Luers next plays Lapel this Saturday.

Kokomo Senior Karson Rogers put people on notice last week that in order to beat the Wildkats, they have more than one talented player to consider shutting down. In an 83-61 win at #13 Richmond and a 72-39 victory against a solid Lebanon team, the 6-6 forward was outstanding at both ends of the floor. Rogers averaged 23.5 points per game on 22-28 (79%) shooting from the field. Additionally, he averaged 9.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game for #5 Kokomo.

Danville Community High School tends to go as Junior Emma Ancelet is going, and last week she came up big in their 57-23 victory over the Speedway Sparkplugs. Ancelet, a 5-7 point guard, posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists, she was 8-15 from the field, and 2-3 from downtown, plus she added 8 rebounds, and 4 steals, proving her nice all-around worth as a ballplayer. Danville won just its 3rd Regional title in program history, but now they aim for their 1st State Finals appearance, beginning this Saturday with a matchup against Bishop Chatard.

District-3 was as competitive as any on the boys’ side, with multiple performances in the mid to high 30s and 40s. We selected Switzerland County Junior Cam Craig because of his all-around contributions and consistency in his team’s pair of wins. As the Pacers won 62-39 at Shawe Memorial and 78-71 in overtime at home against Austin, Craig was locked in and had a 37-point game and a

40-point game, averaging 38.5 points per game on 62% (26-42) shooting from the field. Additionally, he was 8-15 (53%) from deep, and 17-21 (81%) from the charity stripe. The 6-4 forward also posted a pair of double-doubles, averaging 15.0 rebounds per game (7.0 offensive rebounds per game).

Junior Ellie Richardson has helped Scottsburg accomplish a few things the Warriors haven’t seen in a while. They won their first Sectional title since 2012, their first Regional title since 1995 this past weekend with a 62-51 success against a talented Greensburg group, and now they look to return to the State Finals for the first time since the 1980s, when they made three appearances (1986, 1988, 1989). The aforementioned Richardson has been key to their success this season, and Saturday the 5-8 guard poured in 28 points, she pulled down 7 caroms, and she dished out 3 assists in their win against the Pirates. The Junior guard also shot 9-16 from the field, 3-5 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 7-7 on free tosses. Scottsburg now takes on Gibson Southern this Saturday in a midday Semi-State matchup.

Insight into Tri's Tena Potter hitting for a State Record 75 points..

As I was grudgingly adding Hamilton Height's Cam Runner to the Record Book for her 64 points in the recent blooooooooooooow out win vs. Tipton (don't get me started again,) I again became curious about Tena Potter's all-time state record of 75 points scored against Morton memorial in the 1976-77 season.

I had tried researching that game several years back but had come-up empty. However, as more and more newspapers become digitized and past issues are made available, I recently stumbled across some additional info that I found interesting.

As one would imagine girls high school basketball was on the back burner for most sports pages during that era. Still the Fortville Tribune dated Dec. 30, 1976 had this short write-up and no box score.

Tri Girls on Point Spree
Tena Potter of Tri High went on a scoring spree against Morton memorial recently as she pumped in 75 points in a 106-26 win. Potter, a junior, reportedly stayed at Tri's end of the court most of the game and scores several uncontested baskets.

And there you go. Cherry picking, snow birding, call it what you will, but that answers that. In a blow out game no less. Oyyyyyyy. Not what I was hoping for.

I was curious and really wanted to see what Potter looked like in her playing days. These from Tri yearbook 1977 - Potter's junior year:

Players of the Week from: Maconaquah, Marquette, Wapahani, Kokomo, Eastbrook, BNL & Providence

Last week, more than 390 girls’ basketball programs around the state began postseason play in hopes of something as simple as a single victory, or as complicated as a state title. By the time the dust settled late Saturday night, just 64 teams remained as Sectional champions. Meanwhile, in between the boys were entertaining as well, and below we will celebrate a 50-point outing, a 45-point outing, plus several records being set. All in all, seven hoopers have been selected as the Week-14 IBCA/Franciscan Health Players of the Week.

Maconaquah Junior Josiah Ball, Marquette Catholic Sophomore Laniah Davis, Wapahani Senior Isaac Andrews, Kokomo Senior Flory Bidunga, Eastbrook Senior Sophia Morrison, Providence Senior Noah Lovan, and Bedford North Lawrence Senior Madisyn Bailey have been selected For Jan. 29-Feb. 3 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Ball, a boys’ winner, and Davis, a girls’ winner, represent District-1. Andrews and Bidunga share boys’ honors, while Morrison picks up girls’ honors, in District-2. Lovan is the boys’ recipient, and Bailey is the girls’ recipient in District-3.

Maconaquah Junior Josiah Ball has put together an outstanding season, and it continued last week in a 98-78 victory over Western. The 6-5 forward erupted for 50 points on 19-35 shooting, which included a 4-8 performance from deep and an 8-10 outing from the free throw line. In addition to his explosive scoring effort, the Junior forward also managed to pull down 9 rebounds, he handed out a pair of assists, and he collected a pair of steals at the defensive end of the floor.

Sophomore Laniah Davis has been an explosive scorer for two seasons now, and last week she scored her 900th point in just the 48th game of her career. Additionally, the 5-8 guard helped Marquette Catholic to a Sectional #50 crown. Tuesday, Marquette took care of host Culver Community by an easy margin, Friday it was Oregon-Davis, 66-44, and while Saturday was a bit tougher, they knocked off Triton, 52-39. For the week, the youngster averaged 23.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 5.7 steals per game, with a double-double against Oregon-Davis and 30 points versus Triton.

Wapahani Senior sharpshooter Isaac Andrews has been strong all four years of his career, and last week he set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 45-point effort in their hard-fought, 81-73 triple overtime win against Cowan Thursday night. The 6-1 guard added 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, plus a blocked shot to his effort. Saturday, in an easy victory over Union (Modoc), Andrews managed another 30 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals in limited time.

In his only game last week, Kokomo Senior Flory Bidunga reached the 1400-point plateau, plus he collected his 1000th rebound, joining the rare 1000-point/1000-rebound club. Even more impressive, the 6-10 University of Kansas commit has done it in just three seasons. The Wildkats won their eighth game in a row by defeating Cathedral, 91-74. Bidunga finished 9-10 from the field, he scored 23 points, pulled down 17 rebounds, handed out 5 assists, and blocked 5 shots in the triumph.

Senior Sophia Morrison helped Eastbrook to their second consecutive Sectional #39 title, but it wasn’t all easy for the Panthers. Tuesday, they knocked off the host Elwood Panthers with ease. Friday, in the Sectional Semi-Final, it was more of the same against Madison-Grant. But in Saturday’s title game, it took Eastbrook four overtimes…yes, four…to avenge a loss to Blackford from the week prior, 62-58. All in all, Morrison, a Grace College commit, was outstanding, averaging 25.7 points, 2.3 assists, and 5.0 steals per game. She poured in 32 points versus Blackford, plus she surpassed the 1400-point mark.

Providence Senior Noah Lovan was critical for the Pioneers in a pair of games last week, but none more so than a 30-point performance in a 67-34 win over now 12-5 South Central (Elizabeth) on Thursday night. Lovan buried 14-19 shots, including knocking down two of his three 3-point attempts. He followed that Saturday with a 28-point outing in a 75-40 success against Henryville. The 6-3 guard was highly effective at the charity stripe this time, making 11-12 shots from 15-feet. He added 9 rebounds and 6 assists in the win, helping move the Pioneers to 14-3 on the year.

The Bailey name is synonymous with Bedford North Lawrence basketball, and last week Senior Madisyn Bailey helped the Lady Stars to a huge upset and a Sectional #15 crown. The Stars began their week Wednesday night with a 58-24 win against New Albany. It continued Friday, as they took care of a very good Silver Creek program, 60-41. But Saturday was the big one, as Bedford avenged a 17-point loss from earlier this season, this time using key defensive stops to knock off IBCA #6 Jennings County, 43-39. The 5-9 Bailey was a huge catalyst each game defensively, often defending the other team’s best player, limiting them to single digits. Additionally, the Marian University commit averaged 18.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 3.7 steals per game, plus she was 19-29 from the field and an impressive 8-11 from downtown.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Lebanon Coach informed of Non-Renewal

jaqincnxjjxi11hresrr

Lebanon girls - Departing Coach Candace Huckstep
LEBANON, Ind. -- (Updated 2/8) Coach Huckstep has announced administration’s decision to let her go via LHS basketball’s Facebook page. Login to view embedded media Comments are interesting and paint an intriguing picture of what gives in Tigerland right now. Coach went 63-58 during her five years there. Previous four seasons: (15-9 2nd round Sectional loss to Chatard) (15-8 2nd round Sectional loss to Chatard) (11-13 1st round Sectional loss to Guerin) (11-13 2nd round Sectional loss to Cascade.) Listing these details because reportedly being fired for W/L record. For the record Lebanon has been very competitive during Coach’s time there. Most recently Lebanon finished 11-15 and managed to advance to the Sectional title game before getting drubbed by a very strong Danville (22-3.) The Tigers also finished fourth in the eight-team Sagamore Conference with a record of 4-3. As far as what incoming coach with have to work with, only three seniors leave, and they combined for just 11 PPG. A pretty solid group of four srs-2-b are expected back which include the squad’s top two scorers. Good Varsity Club member insisted this should not be overstated as nobody is dropping double digits consistently, but enough should be back from the varsity underclassmen to remain competitive. Now, is that enough given the current climate at Lebanon? Good Varsity Clubber insists that’s the million dollar question. A 16-4 JV should help as well. Report goes on to state there are several middle schools that play for pretty strong AAU programs in addition to the school teams. Another factor that makes this job slightly more attractive is that it no longer resides in the non-public Sectional where it rested for the bulk of Coach Huckstep’s tenure. There for a while there was an unnatural cluster of privates, and Lebanon was smack in the middle of their ping-pong balls. That is indeed a plus as the Sectional field is now primarily made-up of fellow Sagamore Conference foes. No teaching gigs at Lebanon currently. No timeline for hiring yet available either as opening not yet officially listed. No confirmation on interest level, but texts have suggested current LHS VA Megan Alexander (Former head coach at Webo) as potential candidate.

Upset feelings about running-up a score go back decades

This from 1995 Lafayette Journal & Courier regarding Seeger and Indiana high school legend Stephanie White-McCarty.

They had just pounded Attica, 108-35. Stephanie had knocked down 22 of her 66 points in the 4th quarter when the game was already well out of doubt.

Funny thing was that Seeger and White thought her 66 was a State Record at the time. It was not. They were informed shortly after the game regarding Tri's Potter total mentioned in post below.

High School Coaches running up scores on weak opponents

Is it time for basketball coaches, administrators, fans, and everyone to call out coaches in Indiana who embarrass their opponents?

No team should not have a chance to score double digits or get beaten by 50 points?

Mostly Girls teams but also boys are guilty .

Girls Coaches appear to be at Hamilton Heights, Lebanon, Western, Frankton, Anderson,Lapel, Franklin County, Northeastern, among others.

Gymnasium question

My grandson played a homeschool basketball team recently. They played in a throwback gym similar to the on in Hoosiers. The gym is 98 years old and is near Kokomo. Does anyone know what the gym was called or what school(s) played. My son saw an old trophy case with awards but he didn’t look at it closely. So, HH what do you know about the gym!
