Cowan's 57 Turnovers make Record Book!

NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- in doing some research for another project, I stumbled upon this gem. During the 1977 girls Sectional played at New Castle, BRV downed Cowan, 66-18. The Vikes subbed early and often to keep things sporting (all BRV players scored and only two reached double digits,) but ultimately Cowan fumbled their way to 57 turnovers - second most all-time.

70th Anniversary Celebration of the “Milan Miracle” to Take Place March 23

Milan, Indiana — A 70th anniversary celebration of Milan High School’s legendary 1954 Indiana Basketball State Championship will be held on Saturday, March 23 in the town of Milan. Festivities will take place in the Milan High School gymnasium (609 N. Warpath Drive, Milan, Indiana) beginning at 11 am and admission is free and open to the public. The celebration will include remarks from dignitaries and feature a panel discussion with the Milan players. Greg Rakestraw, of the ISC Sports Network in Indianapolis and the 2023 “Indiana Sportscaster of the Year”, will moderate the discussion. Following the formal ceremony, the Milan players and actors from the movie Hoosiers will sign autographs and food trucks will be on hand. Merchandise from the Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum will be available for purchase and the museum, located at 201 West Carr Street, will be open to the public prior to ceremony from 8 am to 10 am and then following the ceremony from 2 pm to 4 pm. *Note, those planning to attend must RSVP via the following link: https://forms.gle/WQGtzm2jMnfWCB9D7

On March 20,1954, the Milan Indians became the smallest school in Indiana history to capture the state championship. With time running out, Milan guard Bobby Plump hit the game-winning shot to defeat powerhouse Muncie Central by a score of 32-30. The following day, 40,000 people descended on Milan (population: 1,150) as the team returned home from Indianapolis, lining State Road 101 for thirteen miles to congratulate the Indians. In 2016, the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and Indiana Sports History Properties LLC – unveiled the 25 greatest stories in Indiana sports history. The “Milan Miracle” ranked number one on the list. In 1986, Milan’s state championship run was portrayed in the movie Hoosiers which is regarded as one of the best sports films ever made.

“As someone who was born and raised in Milan, Indiana, I find it hard to believe that we will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Milan Indians’ iconic victory in the 1954 Indiana State High School basketball championship game. We hope to have a tremendous crowd on hand to honor the team on March 23 in the Milan High School gymnasium. Featuring remarks from several dignitaries and interviews with players and actors from the movie Hoosiers, this day will also be a historic one for the town of Milan. We welcome all who have a love for the "Milan Miracle", the movie Hoosiers, and Indiana basketball and look forward to seeing you on March 23!” Tom Kohlmeier, Board Chairman of the Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum

“Indiana and basketball go hand-in-hand, and the sport is forever ingrained in our rich, historic proud past. The Milan Miracle of 1954 was key in solidifying Indiana’s reputation as the state that grew the game. From Bobby Plump to Bobby Knight, Oscar Robertson to George McGinnis and Larry Bird to Reggie Miller, Indiana’s history is full of Hoosier legends. While many theories exist on what is a Hoosier, to me the word Hoosier will always be tied a deep love and respect for the game.” Eric Holcomb, Governor of the State of Indiana

“Growing up, I can recall that each year, prior to the state tournament, our local newspaper would pull out the story of the mighty Milan Indians vanquishing the Muncie Central Bearcats. No doubt our paper was not unique in this regard. Most other small or medium-sized towns were doing the same to inspire the local team that they, too, could pull off a miraculous tournament run. Of course, that game would become the core story representing the special relationship between the people of Indiana and basketball. As Milan’s mythic journey has inspired countless players and coaches in the past 70 years, it too inspired me 40 years ago to write the movie Hoosiers. I look forward to celebrating the 70th anniversary of the greatest game in Indiana high school history with the very special members of that team.” Angelo Pizzo, Screenwriter for the movie Hoosiers

"It's hard to believe that it's been 70 years since we achieved our goal of winning the Indiana State High School Basketball Championship. My teammates and I are thrilled to reunite in Milan on March 23rd to relive so many great memories and celebrate with our family members, friends, dignitaries, and others who appreciate our story and the rich history of Indiana basketball. It's most meaningful that the celebration will occur in Milan-it's where our journey began and remains a place that we hold dear to our hearts."
Bobby Plump, Guard on the 1954 Milan Indians team

Mishawaka planning 100-year anniversary game for 'The Cave' in early 2025

51fe66c7-7161-438c-95b7-9bb8b5762e3e-elkhartmishawakahsbb01032023_10.JPG

[The oldest active high school gymnasium in Indiana turns 100 next year, and Mishawaka is throwing it a birthday party in style.

“The Cave,” home to the MHS basketball, wrestling and volleyball teams, will host a 100th anniversary celebration Jan. 4, 2025, against Northview High School. It’ll be 100 years and one week to the day that the Cavemen played their first game in the gym – Dec. 27, 1924 – against the same school they played in the first contest. Back then, it was Brazil High School, which consolidated into Northview in 1984.

The schools were hoping to play on the 27th, but Northview is playing in a holiday tournament that same day, hence why the anniversary game will take place a week later. Northview is located 20 miles east of Terre Haute.]

Players of the Week from Valpo, Homestead, New Wash, Brownstown, West Lafayette & Indian Creek!

The end of the road is near for many of Indiana’s Senior female hoopers, as the regular season came to a close Saturday evening. Tonight begins Sectional play for several teams, with aspirations of making it to Gainbridge Fieldhouse in late-February. The boys’ also remained competitive last week, with some thrilling ends to games. This week seven players in total have been chosen as Week-13 Players of the Week.

Valparaiso Junior Jack Smiley, Homestead Sophomore Myah Epps, Greenfield-Central Junior Braylon Mullins, West Lafayette Senior Adrianne Tolen, Brownstown Central Senior Jack Benter, New Washington Senior Kaidin James, and Indian Creek Senior Faith Wiseman have been selected For Jan. 22-Jan. 27 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Smiley is the boys’ winner, and Epps is the girls’ winner in District-1. Mullins is the boys’ recipient, while Tolen is the girls’ recipient for District-2. Benter takes home boys’ honors, while James and Wiseman share girls’ honors for District-3.

Valparaiso continued their nice season with a pair of strong wins over the weekend. Friday night, the Vikings took care of a solid Merrillville squad, 80-63, in Merrillville. Smiley was locked in, scoring 23 points, pulling down 8 rebounds, handing out 11 assists to post a double-double, and collecting 4 steals in the meantime. Saturday, the Vikings hosted Munster, knocking off the Mustangs by a 62-55 margin. The 6-2 guard was again strong, scoring 26 points on 10-18 shooting, including 5-10 from deep. He also tallied 6 rebounds and 9 assists to help Valparaiso to a 14-4 mark to end January.

Homestead’s Myah Epps might just be a Sophomore, but she is already gaining a reputation for late-game heroics for the Spartans. Friday, in a 72-71 double overtime thriller against Fort Wayne Northrop, the 5-10 guard made play after play, including a critical score late in regulation, as well as the game-tying basket to push the game into the second overtime period. All in all, Epps scored 27 points in the triumph, knocking down 11-17 shots from the field, 2-4 from 3-point range, and 3 free throws, while pulling in 8 rebounds, handing out 9 assists, and posting 2 steals and 2 blocked shots defensively.

Greenfield-Central Junior Braylon Mullins has already put together a stellar career, so at this point he is just compiling more tales to tell. Friday night, the Cougars traveled to Pendleton Heights for a Hoosier Heritage Conference game, and they escaped with a 74-72, double overtime victory against the Arabians. The 6-5 Junior guard erupted for a career-high and school record 51 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer. Overall, Mullins was 18-31 from the field, he knocked down 4 3-pointers, and he was an efficient 11-13 from the charity stripe. He also chipped in 4 rebounds, 3 assists, a pair of steals, and a blocked shot in the exciting performance.

West Lafayette Senior Adrianne Tolen has been extremely strong and consistent all season, and last week she helped the Red Devils to a pair of nice wins over Class 4A competition. Thursday, they hosted crosstown rival Harrison, knocking off the Lady Raiders, 53-42. Tolen was on point, scoring 27 points via 11-18 shooting, she made her only 3-point attempt, and she tossed in 4 free throws as well. The 5-10 wing added 5 rebounds, a pair of assists, and she collected 8 steals in the victory. Saturday, the Red Devils picked up an impressive win, 56-28, over a now 19-4 McCutcheon squad. Playing slightly beyond halftime, the Missouri S&T commit was again strong, posting a stat line of 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals, as they head into their Sectional play following another winning season.

Purdue University recruit and Brownstown Central Senior Jack Benter helped his Braves to a trio of Mid-Southern Conference wins last week. Tuesday, Brownstown handled Austin fairly easily, Friday it was another lopsided win at Charlestown, and Saturday the Braves took care of Corydon Central in Corydon by yet another large margin, pushing their conference record to 7-0; 16-4 overall. All week the

6-5 guard shot the ball extremely well, scoring 76 points on 28-44 overall, including a combined 16-25 (64%) performance in the three games from beyond the arc. He added a total of 22 rebounds and 15 assists over those three contests as well.

New Washington Senior Kaidin James isn’t widely known throughout the state, but she has been impressive at times throughout her career for the Mustangs. Tuesday, in a comfortable Southern Conference win at Crothersville, the 5-7 guard posted the rare triple-double, exploding for 38 points, pulling in 11 rebounds (6 offensive), and stealing the ball 15 times. She also handed out 6 assists and even blocked a shot for good measure. She was 13-14 from the charity stripe, and she surpassed the 1500-point mark for her career.

Indian Creek Senior and Indiana University commit Faith Wiseman is sharing District-3 honors with James because of an even rarer quadruple-double she posted in their 69-35 Western Indiana Conference win over South Putnam Thursday night. The 6-4 forward scored 18 points and collected an outstanding 26 rebounds in the contest, to go along with 10 assists and 10 blocked shots. Wiseman also joined the exclusive 1000 rebound club Thursday. Saturday, the Senior forward helped the Braves to a perfect 10-0 conference record, with a 50-34 win against Northview.

SB Adams boys basketball coach Chad Johnston reaches 300 career wins

[South Bend Adams boys basketball coach Chad Johnston reached a career milestone Monday, picking up his 300th victory in a 59-46 home win over Bremen.

He became the third coach in South Bend history to reach 300 career wins, joining former Adams coach Dave Hadaway (315 wins) and Mark Johnson, who won a total of 470 games across stops at the now-defunct LaSalle, Riley and Saint Joseph. Hadaway — who the court at Adams High School is named after was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000, and Johnson is surely on his way there as well.]
