Maguire, Simpson and Votaw named Indiana All-Star Coaches!

Andy Maguire of Zionsville has been named head coach for the 2024 IndyStar girls' Indiana All-Stars, games director Mike Broughton announced Friday (March 1).

Maguire will be assisted by Jason Simpson of Greensburg and Lauren Votaw of Fishers.

Players chosen for the 2024 girls' All-Stars will play three games in June -- one exhibition game against the Indiana Junior All-Stars as well as home-and-home contests against the Kentucky All-Stars.

Maguire has compiled a 330-240 record in 26 seasons as a varsity girls' coach, including a Class 4A state runner-up finish in 2018. He is 256-209 in 21 seasons at Zionsville, including a 16-7 finish in 2023-24. He previous posted a 74-31 mark in five seasons at Western Boone. His teams have won five sectionals, one at Western Boone and four at Zionsville, as well as one regional and one semi-state.

A 1982 graduate of South Vermillion, Maguire played four seasons of basketball and baseball for the Wildcats. He went on to Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1987. He later earned a master's degree in secondary administration from IUPUI.

Maguire started his coaching career as a boys' basketball assistant at Lebanon in 1987-88. He then was a boys' basketball assistant at Western Boone from 1988 through 1994 before becoming the Stars' head coach. He moved to Zionsville for the 1999-2000 season, coaching the Eagles for seven seasons. After a five-year break from coaching, he took over the Eagles a second time in 2010-11 and has guided the program to winning campaigns in eight of the past nine seasons.

He was an IBCA District 2 Coach of the Year and was a Junior All-Star assistant coach in 2016. He currently teaches health and physical education at Zionsville Middle School.

Simpson has compiled a 180-65 mark in 10 seasons as the girls' coach at Greensburg, including a 21-5 mark with a sectional title in 2023-24. During his tenure, the Pirates have won five sectionals, one regional, one semi-state and finished as Class 3A state runner-up in 2018.

He previously was a Greensburg boys' basketball assistant for 14 seasons, and he was part of the boys' staff that captured Class 3A state titles in 2013 and 2014. He was an IBCA girls' District 3 Coach of the Year and was a girls' Junior All-Star assistant coach in 2018.

A 1994 graduate of Greensburg, Simpson played four seasons of basketball in high school. He earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University in 1998 and a master's degree from Ball State in 2005. He teaches physical education at Greensburg High School.

Votaw led Fishers to a 17-7 mark in 2023-24, one season after guiding the Tigers to a 26-3 ledger and a Class 4A state runner-up finish. Her record in seven seasons at Fishers is 131-44, including sectional titles in 2020 and 2023. Her team added regional and semi-state crowns in 2023 as well. She was an IBCA District 2 Coach of the Year and a Junior All-Star assistant coach in 2020.

The former Lauren Vail is a 2004 graduate of Greenfield-Central, where she earned 11 letters as a high school athlete -- four in basketball, four in volleyball, two in softball and one in track & field. She went on to play four years of basketball at Anderson University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education in 2008. She later received a master's degree from Ball State in 2013.

Votaw began her coaching career as the Noblesville girls' JV coach in 2008-09. She moved to Fishers as an assistant coach from 2009-17. She became the Tigers' varsity coach starting in 2017-18, and she teaches advanced physical conditioning and sports medicine at Fishers.

The Junior-Senior exhibition game is set for June 5 at Kokomo. The first game against Kentucky will be June 7 at a site to be announced. The final game against Kentucky will be June 8 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. All three dates will be doubleheaders with the IndyStar Indiana boys' All-Stars.

Rosters for the 2024 Indiana girls' All-Stars, Indiana boys' All-Stars, girls' Junior All-Stars and boys' Junior All-Stars will be announced later.

The Indiana Junior All-Stars will play two girl-boy doubleheaders this year -- June 2 against the Kentucky Junior All-Stars at site to be announced and June 5 against the Indiana seniors at Kokomo.

The 2024 IndyStar Indiana All-Star "Futures Games" doubleheader will be on June 3 at Hamilton Southeastern. This event, for girls and boys who are current sophomores or freshmen, will feature two Indiana teams in a North-South format. Rosters for the Futures Games will be announced later.

The Indiana All-Stars program was founded in 1939 when the Indiana boys' All-Stars played the state champion Frankfort Hot Dogs. The series with Kentucky began in 1940, and the girls' portion of the All-Stars was added in 1976. The Junior All-Stars, boys and girls, were added in 1996. The All-Star senior girls have played Kentucky every year since 1976, except 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The All-Star senior boys have played Kentucky in all but three years since 1940 -- 1943 (World War II), 1944 (World War II) and 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic).

The Indiana Senior girls lead 53-41 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior girls lead 41-11 in games against the Indiana Junior girls. The Indiana Junior girls lead 11-1 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior boys lead 104-45 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior boys lead 41-11 in games against the Indiana Junior boys. The Indiana Junior boys lead 7-5 in their series with Kentucky. In the first Futures Games event in 2023, the North girls prevailed 73-63 and the South boys won 100-96.

The Indiana portion of the All-Star Games is organized and produced by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. The Indianapolis Star, with its IndyStar brand, is the title sponsor. Hoosier Shooting Academic is a presenting partner for All-Star Week. Energy Systems Group is a presenting partner of the Saturday doubleheader against Kentucky.

IBCA Names Girls All-State!

Fifteen seniors and 15 underclass girls' basketball players have earned IBCA/Franciscan Health "Supreme 15" All-State honors for 2023-24, it was announced Thursday (Feb. 29).

The IBCA also named Large School All-State teams (15 seniors, 15 underclass) and Small School All-State teams (16 seniors, 15 underclass).

The "Supreme 15" is the top honor awarded, and players were voted to that group without regard to school size. The Large School and Small School all-state teams are secondary accolades -- the Large School group including players from Class 3A and Class 4A schools and the Small School group including players from Class A and Class 2A schools. Players who make the Supreme 15 are not considered for Large School or Small School honors. The Senior Small School All-State team had 16 members because of a tie in the voting for the final spot.

In addition, 89 more seniors and 90 more underclass players were selected honorable mention all-state. The honorable mention laurels are awarded without regard to school size. In total, 270 players -- 135 seniors and 135 underclass players -- were recognized on the 2024 IBCA girls' basketball All-State teams.

Those voted to the 2024 IBCA/Franciscan Health Supreme 15 Senior girls' team are, listed alphabetically: Payton Benge, Plainfield; Aniyah Bishop, Lake Central; Kennedy Fuelling, Norwell; Emma Haan, Zionsville; Talia Harris, Fishers; Rachel Harshman, Mooresville; Denyha Jacobs, Warren Central; Ellery Minch, Mt. Vernon (Fortville); Jordyn Poole, Fort Wayne Snider; Camryn Runner, Hamilton Heights; Chloe Spreen, Bedford North Lawrence; Reagan Wilson, Noblesville; Faith Wiseman, Indian Creek; Juliann Woodard, Jennings County; and Ava Ziolkowski, Crown Point.

Those voted to the 2024 IBCA/Franciscan Health Supreme 15 Underclass girls' team are, listed alphabetically: Laila Abdurraqib, Lawrence Central; Lillian Barnes, Valparaiso; Addison Baxter, Columbia City; Myah Epps, Homestead; Gracyn Gilliard, Munster; Avery Gordon, Brownsburg; Lillie Graves, McCutcheon; Jaylah Lampley, Lawrence Central; Lola Lampley, Lawrence Central; Maya Makalusky, Hamilton Southeastern; Brooklynn Renn, Silver Creek; Kira Reynolds, South Bend Washington; Gabby Spink, Gibson Southern; Meredith Tippner, Noblesville; and Brooke Winchester, Warsaw.

The IBCA/Franciscan Health All-State teams are selected through a process organized by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and presented by Franciscan Health Sports Medicine.

All IBCA-member head coaches have the opportunity to nominate players. A panel of 20 IBCA coaches -- 16 from the current regional areas, three district representatives (one each from IHSAA Districts 1, 2 and 3) and the committee chairman -- then meet to review the nominations, vote and finalize the selections.

Those on the IBCA all-state committee for 2024 included chairman Doug Springer of Northridge plus Rod Parker of Homestead from District 1, DeeAnn Ramey of North Central from District 2 and Kevin Moore of East Central from District 3.

Completing the voting panel were Kristi Ulrich of Penn, Andy Maguire of Zionsville, Curt Benge of Plainfield and Tyler Choate of Evansville North in Class 4A; Chris Tomcsi of Griffith, Ray Davis of Maconaquah, Kaley May of Danville and Dan Grill (for Adam Dennis) of Madison in Class 3A; Tony Scheub of Andrean, Justin Jordan of Whitko, Mark Harper of Riverton Parke and Jared Rehmel of Linton-Stockton in Class 2A; and Rick Budka of Morgan Township, Ryan Chiddister of Union (Modoc), Jason West of Southwestern (Shelby) and Marty Niehaus of Springs Valley in Class A.

Franciscan Health Sports Medicine is making a financial contribution to the IBCA Scholarship Fund as the presenting partner of the IBCA All-State Teams. As part of the partnership, Franciscan Health Sports Medicine will provide plaques to Supreme 15 honorees and certificates to players receiving Large School All-State, Small School All-State or Honorable Mention All-State recognition. Those items will be made available to each recipient's coach during April, allowing her coach to present the award to each player prior to the end of the 2023-24 academic year.

The IBCA thanks Franciscan Health Sports Medicine for being a partner in this annual project.

The complete 2024 IBCA/Franciscan Health Senior All-State and 2024 IBCA/Franciscan Health Underclass All-State teams for girls basketball are listed below.

Annual Tournament Predictions: Class 4A

Fans,

Shown below are my 63rd annual state tournament predictions for Class4A. For 4A, I’ve shown my state champion selection, as well as the top five contenders from each of the two semi-state areas.

Again this year, I’ve hypothetically allocated $100 to each sectional. I then asked myself if I were to bet that amount of money on each sectional, how would I distribute this amount among the teams that I feel have any chance of winning. This provides a better measuring stick for more specifically differentiating the chances of each of the sectional contenders.

Tournament Prediction “History” ---last year I predicted 81% of the sectional games correctly. Sectional champions: I picked only 41 of 64 correctly. For the entire tournament, 2013 was my best year with 81.5% of all games being picked correctly. My worst year was my first year, 1962, when I only got 63.5% of the games correct.

And, as always, a big Thank You to John Harrell’s great website for providing so much useful data in such an easily retrievable format !

Enjoy the games!

CLASS 4A

Class Champion
: Fishers

Top 5 Contenders From 1) Fishers; 2) Kokomo; 3) Noblesville;
the North Semi-State: 4) Westfield; 5) Carmel.

Top 5 Contenders From 1) Lawrence North; 2) Indpls.Cathedral; 3) Ben Davis;
the South Semi-State: 4) Center Grove; 5) Indpls.Attucks.

Here are my predictions for each sectional in 4A along with a few comments.

1. at EAST CHICAGO: East Chicago-$35; Lake Central-30; Merrillville-20; Munster-15.
Comment: An excellent group with five squads well above .500. East Chicago has not
won a sectional since 2017. Lake Central hasn't won since 2018. East Chicago is
playing at home and has beaten the other six teams here. So, I'm picking them.

2. at CHESTERTON: Crown Point-$35; Valpo-30; Chesterton-25; Portage-10.
Comments: Chesterton has won this sectional the last two years, but they're
struggling a bit this year. A semi-final game between Valpo and Crown Point
will likely determine the ultimate champion. CP won by 3 points at Valpo
just a couple of weeks ago.

3. at MISHAWAKA: S.B.Riley-$30; Mishawaka-25; Michigan City-20; LaPorte-15; S.B.Adams-10.
.
4. at ELKHART: Northridge-$35; Warsaw-30; Penn-20; Concord-15.

5. at EAST NOBLE: F.W.North-$35; Carroll-30; East Noble-20; F.W.Snider-15.
Comments: This is a fairly weak group compared to prior years.

6. at HOMESTEAD: F.W.Wayne-$40; Columbia City-35; Homestead-25.
Comments: Last year, Wayne edged Homestead and put an end to the domination that
Homestead had over this field. The latter had won sectionals in 8 of the last 11 years.
Wayne should be able to repeat and it won't be a surprise.

7. at LAFAYETTE: Kokomo-$100.
Comments: Kokomo has beaten all the other teams at this site by a least 15 points.
It's very doubtful that they will be challenged here.

8. at NOBLESVILLE: Fishers-$40; Noblesville-25; Westfield-20; Carmel-15.
Comments: An excellent group here with at least three state title contenders. I'm casting
a shaky vote for Fishers. The Tigers are the best team I've seen this year. On the other hand,
in their 17 years of tourney competition, they've only won 8 games!! So, not much tradition
here to draw upon. Fishers only loss amongst this group was to Carmel. But all the other teams
here have defeated the Greyhounds. Westfield has lost only to Fishers. Noblesville has lost only
to Fishers AND Westfield.

9. at GREENFIELD: Greenfield-$30; Anderson-25; New Palestine-20; Mt.Vernon-15; Richmond-10.
Comments:For many years this group was very weak. But now, this is one of the best sectionals
around when it comes to quality teams potentially playing extremely competitive contests. Greenfield get to play on their home floor this time, which should be a big advantage for them.

10. at LAWRENCE NORTH: Lawrence North-$40; Indpls.Cathedral-35; Indpls.Attucks-25.
Comments: Overall a nice group of teams. Realistically, however, the title will likely boil
down to games involving LN, Attucks, and Cathedral.

11. at SOUTHPORT: Ben Davis-$85; Franklin Central-15.

12. at TERRE HAUTE SOUTH: T.H.North-$35, Brownsburg-30; Plainfield-25, Avon-10.

13. at BLOOMINGTON NORTH: Center Grove -$85; Bloomington South-10; Bloomington North 5.

14. at EAST CENTRAL : Franklin-$40; Whiteland-35; Columbus North-25..

15. at SEYMOUR: Jeffersonville-$35; Seymour-30; New Albany-25; Bedford-10.
Comments: Since the inception of class basketball, the makeup of Sectional 15 has remained
exactly the same. The same 6 teams that started off in this sectional are the ones that are still competing.
Five of these six team have won at least two sectionals. Unfortunately the Seymour Owls have never
won this sectional--even though their arena has hosted most, if not all, of this sectional's battles.
That might change this year. The Owls enter tourney play with an 18-4 record--their best record in
at least 30 years. And they defeated 4 of the other teams in this sectional during the regular season--
losing only to New Albany in an overtime battle in late December. I'm not officially picking the Owls, but
believe this is their best shot in many years. They should be commended for the great season they have
had.

16. at EVANSVILLE NORTH: Evans.Harrison-$40; Jasper-35; Evans. Reitz-25.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Dwenger Returns Exciting Frosh

Dwenger girls - Departing Coach Steve Wiktorowski
FT. WAYNE, Ind. -- (Updated 2/27)
Now official that Coach Wiktorowski will not return for a sixth season at Dwenger. Last year’s batch finished 10-15, and sported four seniors on the roster. Points were a prized commodity, but good Varsity Clubber indicates Coach played a lot of players. Aside from soph-2-b guard Izzie Eke (10PPG) and graduating sr sister Giselle Eke (9PPG) it was pretty much scoring and rebounding by committee anyway. The younger Eke, who is already a proven outside/inside varsity player, appears ready to blossom into a true difference maker. One report of potential internal interest among the current staff. Another Varsity Club text stated to keep an eye out for Mallorie Schon - JV coach and former Woodlan AC as possible emerging name. Apps deadline is 4/5 but Varsity Clubber reports that is a soft one, and he states the thing could wrap-up sooner if right candidate is found before then.

East Chicago Police Department officers were called to the East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School around 6:40 a.m. Friday for a death investigation. Maintenance workers led police to the stairwell where Jones was found. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

2024 Coaching Rumor Mill Opens with Front Runner at Chesterton!

Chesterton girls - Departing Coach Jack Campbell
CHESTERTON, Ind. -- (Updated 2/7)
After nearly four decades at the helm of the Chesterton girls, Hall of Fame Coach Jack Campbell has resigned. AD Jeff Hamstra reportedly will post opening later this week or early next. Intvs will take place in March, and hiring date set for sometime in April. Last year’s Trojans finished 16-8, and Chesterton Trib reports three sophs started by the end of the season. The Trojans are members of the always tough Duneland Conference:LaPorte, Portage, Michigan City, Valpo, Lake Central, Merrillville, and Crown Point. Aside from 5-6 yearly W’s, the schedule is a tough one. Teaching areas are tough at this point given the timing, but MS openings include SS, English, Science, and Math. The same four areas are also open in the high school, but it is hard to tell if those will factor into hiring for the coaching job. Former Portage coach and current CHS JV coach Marc Bruner being mentioned as early front runner. Good Varsity Club member reports JV solid and both 7th and 7th grade squads are winners. Good numbers all the way through the program.

OT: NBA All-Star (mockery of a) Game - An idea for a fix

I don't even know if fixing this is worth the trouble, but here's a idea. It's universally agreed regarding the mockery that the NBA All-Star game has become. We like to talk about defensive touches as being the single most disruptive force that can impact a game. How about this format?

$100k per:
Block
Steal
Deflection

You'd have the score and traditional stats plus you could have a running tally of just how much each player had earned in defensive bonuses.

I Have An Idea For The State Basketball Tournament

Keep the Sectionals a multi-class format, but have a quasi 1 class tournament Regionals (could be an NCAA tournamnet style baracket, since there's only 64 teams left after the Sectional Championship games) on: 4A Sectional Champs vs 3A Champs on one side of the bracket, 2A vs 1A on the other, and have the "Final 4" at Gainbridge on a Friday and Saturday. It wouldn't be the same as what we had, but it would satisfy some people (not all) on both sides, as there would be only 1 State Champion and guarantee a smaller school would be able to play for a state championship.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Whiting boys posts early for next season

uq85x121yunzezfweci4

Whiting boys - Departing Coach TJ Toth
WHITING, Ind. -- (Updated 2/22)
Whiting School Corp has officially posted the Oiler boys job as open for the 24-25 season. No timeline has been set yet, but good Varsity Clubber reports apps are already being accepted. Coach Toth’s Oilers currently stand at 2-20 heading into Sectional, and much of this campaign has seen them getting handled pretty comfortably. Incoming coach will be without the services of four seniors departing this spring, three of whom contributed in a significant way. Varsity Club member does point to some good news in that 5-10 sr-2-b guard and leading scorer Shawn Donaldson and his 20 PPG are expected to return. Two other sr-2-b classmates also expected back after logging significant varsity time last year. Front court concerns abound, though, as nearly all post play departs. JV was less than competitive. More info expected regarding middle school teams moving up. Not much in terms of teaching yet, but HS PE, HS Spanish, and Eled Sped all currently listed as open.

NFHS survey

I was wondering if everyone got a email from the NFHS association. It’s a question survey regrading the 2025-2026. Basketball Rule Book. The survey was conducted by Survey Monkey. Some of the questions were absolutely ridiculous!

One of the questions that caught me off guard was this; Should the shot clock operator be seated at the scorer table?

Hmmm
