HH Varsity Club Insider: Delphi boys return 40PPG

emuqr4aibuimkn5atqaj

Delphi boys - Departing Coach Austin Cowley
DELPHI, Ind. -- (Updated 4/3) Coach Cowley has led the Oracles for the last four years, but report received indicates he will ‘be replaced’ next season. Last year Delphi managed a respectable 11-13 campaign. Good Varsity Club member reports only two seniors graduate and just one was a starter (leading scorer & rebounder 18PPG, 7RPG.) The other five regulars last season were all underclassmen, and should return. All told the Oracles should bring back about 40PPG including second leading scorer, 6-0 sr-2-b guard Walker Jones (17PPG, 5RPG.) JV reportedly average - finished 7-11. Last year’s 8th grade finished 11-5. 7th went 9-8. Way down the line, Delphi 6th was 2-6 last year. Report states that front line will likely top out at about 6-2. Conflicting reports on internal interest. MS ELA, MS Math, HS Ag, HS Math, HS Science and Eled openings confirmed.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Michigan City challenge

jmeqixm4zfjgzxzp6nmp

Michigan City girls - Departing Coach Mike Megyese
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- (Updated 4/1)
Coach Megyese has been a standard at Michigan City for fifteen seasons. That reportedly ended by ‘mutual decision.’ Last year they went 6-16, and Varsity Club member offers a limited report stating just about everything is gone except for would-be three-year sr-2-b starting guard Paulecia Isom. Fellow classmate 5-8 forward Divine Woods also multi-letter winner. Internal posting first, but Varsity Club member reports only assistant with any real experience (David Smoot) has a son playing and is not a teacher. Doesn’t rule him out, but obviously a factor. Above all else, Varsity Clubber insists that anyone considering applying from out of town needs to understand the dynamics of the Michigan City community. Broken homes are far more common than families that can afford to go to camps or pay for AAU teams. That is not entirely unique but it is within the Duneland Conference where the majority of the programs are operating with many of the advantages of suburbia. Another email suggests that racial tension has been an issue within the school system, and Coach Megyese was a positive factor in dealing with that where the basketball program was concerned. New coach will have to do the same to be successful. If this one does get extended to external candidates, teaching openings include HS Science, HS SS, Eled, HS Math, and MS Computer.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Satellites graduate scoring punch

q6zkz2gqmzwbn5hhbmch

South Central girls - Departing Coach Ben Anderson
UNION MILLS, Ind. -- (Updated 4/1) Coach Anderson’s job is listed as open after three largely successful seasons at SC. Last season’s 16-7 squad fell short of a Sectional title, but his two previous squad made it to Regionals. Good Varsity Club member reports that from last year’s roster two senior leaders graduate. Problematic in that they were extremely important to just about everything the Satellites accomplished last year. Four other letter winners should return including three jrs-2-b that should make-up the core of varsity for next two seasons. According to report all are capable of holding their own, but gone is the punch of a big scorer unless one develops. Looking down the line, Varsity Clubber reports 8th grade as really limited, 7th grade conference runners-up, and 6th as competitive. Some internal interest expected. MS SS and ELED Music are only teaching jobs open for next fall.

HH Varsity Club Insider: River Forest returns everything from 7-15 squad

zovtsdmnt3slk9tzruqb

River Forest girls - Departing Coach Ryan Gregory
HOBART, Ind. -- (Updated 4/1)
The River Forest job is now official, and according to good Varsity Clubber, admin is interested in moving very fast on this one. Coach Gregory was 7-15 last season, but report states it is important to point out that only one senior graduates, and she played almost no role in last year’s campaign. The Ingots had trouble scoring last season, only hitting at about 35 points per clip. Only one player, sr-2-b post D’yanna Hurn, went for about 14PPG. Also worth noting she pulled down a team best 11-12 RPG. Varsity Clubber insists, though, that there are several srs-2-b, and, maybe more importantly, several jrs-2-b that are on paper to return after logging substantial underclass varsity time. “Ingots have never won a Sectional - as in ever. They’ve only won 12 tourney games total since 1976, so there is zero tourney expectations in terms of school and community. They still may not have enough to get over that hump, but this could be a year they at least have a shot.” The Greater South Shore Conference is another source of trouble for the Ingots. Last season River Forest went 1-7 against conference foes Whiting, Calumet, Griffith, Noll, Illiana Christian, Lake Station, and Wheeler. Email also states no teaching jobs at present, but will likely change. Varsity Clubber wonders if teaching job openings might not come after a fast moving basketball hire is in the books. JV reported as terrible. Middle school teams decent and last year’s 6th grade pretty good.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Roster Question Marks at Jennings County boys

gmyp8r10czq6tpl0own7

Jennings County boys - Departing Coach Rob Kent
NORTH VERNON, Ind. -- (Updated 4/1)
Word now that Coach Kent has resigned after just one season (11-14) with the Panthers. Varsity Club member reports rumors swirling about just who will be in JC uni next season. Mixed reports on sr-2-b Carter Kent (Coach’s son) maybe staying along with this 25PPG. However, the 6-5 jr-2-b and multi-sport athlete Parker Elmore looks to be transferring. Elmore was out this year due to injury but is described as a true difference maker. Could be one both or none at this point, but what is for certain is that the Panthers graduated most of their contributors beyond the two in limbo above. This one has the potential to be a very lean roster if things break the wrong way for incoming coach. A difficult Hoosier Hills Conference schedule does them no favors either. Varsity Club member indicates no teaching job at present, but that is likely to change later this spring.

Updated on Austin, West Washington, and Providence jobs!

gpik4xvvqewmzl3jsvla

Austin boys - Departing Coach Randy Edwards
AUSTIN, Ind. -- (Updated 3/8)
Now confirmed that Coach Edwards will not return for an eighth year in Austin. The Eagles were 7-17 last season finished and 7th in the 9-team Mid-Southern Conference. Good Varsity Club member reports there was some unfounded optimism regarding them improving their record from the past year, but a combination of attitudes and inconsistency finished this team with pretty much the same record as the year before. From that group, reportedly three key contributors graduate. JV described as average. Looking way down the line, 8th grade described as below average. However, 7th grade went 23-0 this past season, and a Varsity Club member reports some kid dropped 50+ in one of their games. 6th and 5th grade decent. Community pressure to win in this town is legit. No teaching jobs at this time. (Updated 4/1) Good Varsity Clubber reports NO talent right now, community and school who wants to win NOW though. One of the best 7th graders in the state, but word is there is little chance he will end up there. Names hearing, Joey Hart

dav5spvetn08qllijain

West Washington boys - Departing Coach Jamie Cummings
CAMPBELLSBURG, Ind. -- (Updated 3/31)
Good Varsity Club member reports Job is officially open as Jamie Cummings has stepped down. The Senators reportedly returns one varsity starter (was a frosh who led the team in assists and shot 42% on 3s.) Report continues four kids who got significant minutes (two frosh, one soph, one jr.) JV was 13-7. Teaching openings will be at a later date but expect to have Eled and HS positions open. (Updated 4/1) Varsity Club member reports big time football school, admin making it hard on coaches right now.

vfgaqxbnhdfqkveyn93h

Providence girls - Departing Coach Brad Burden
CLARKSVILLE, Ind. -- (Updated 3/7)
Now official that well respected Coach Burden has resigned after 16 seasons leading the Pioneers. Good news first: Varsity Clubber reports that, at least on paper, plenty of talent coming back and coming in. Providence has a new state of the art weight facility and tons of success across the board athletically. Bad news: Politics galore. Another Varsity Club member reports a very overactive group of parents and an admin that gives them voice. Both reports underline the fact that basketball must compete with volleyball and soccer. For those brave enough to apply at a potential B.E.S.T. candidate school, current openings at Providence include HS French, HS English, HS Math, HS Spanish, HS Science, and a Theology position. Editorial comment - Wonder what the theology is regarding creating a work environment that would make a successful career coach want to leave? (Updated 4/1) brand new weight facility is a plus to go with the negatives we have already mentioned.

Four State Champs Crowned During Final Week of the IBCA Player of the Week Program

Four State Champs Crowned During Final Week of the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week Program

Following a week-long delay due to the NCAA tournament’s Midwest Regional at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the IHSAA boys’ State Finals were played Saturday, with all four schools claiming their first state titles in program history. Congratulations to Fort Wayne Canterbury (Class A), Brownstown Central (AA), Scottsburg (AAA), and Fishers (AAAA) on this great accomplishment! Additionally, congratulations to the four Mental Attitude Award winners: Luke Douglas of Bethesda Christian (A), Isaac Andrews of Wapahani (AA), Jerry Barca of South Bend St. Joseph (AAA), and Parker Perdue of Fishers (AAAA)!

We would now like to take the time to honor four players of the week this week, one from each of the four champion programs. Fort Wayne Canterbury Senior John Parent, Brownstown Central Senior Jack Benter, Scottsburg Senior Jack Miller, and Fishers Junior JonAnthony Hall have all been selected as Players of the Week in their respective classes for Mar. 25-Mar. 30 in the recognition program sponsored by Franciscan Health and coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Canterbury Senior John Parent came up big for the Cavaliers Saturday, scoring 22 points, including 7 in the fourth quarter of their 48-41 victory over Bethesda Christian in the Class A game. On the day, the 6-5 Senior was 8-15 from the field, 2-5 from deep, and 4-4 from the charity stripe, while also pulling down 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Parent added 2 assists and 2 blocked shots to his effort, as Canterbury finishes the season with an impressive 19-9 mark after starting out just 2-7.

The Class AA game saw the top two teams in the class face off, with Brownstown Central able to jump out to an early 9-point lead by the first media timeout, and the Braves were able to keep that at two possessions or more for the remainder of the 55-36 win. Senior Jack Benter capped off his stellar career with a 25-point, 6-rebound outing. The 6-6 Purdue University commit was 9-18 from the field, 2-4 from beyond the arc, and 5-5 from the free throw line. He added 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots to his tally, as the Braves finished the year with an overall mark of 28-4.

Senior Jack Miller helped the Scottsburg Warriors to a 67-57 victory over the Indians of South Bend St. Joseph in the Class AAA game, scoring a game-high 32 points on a highly efficient 12-18 shooting. He was 3-6 from distance and 5-6 from the stripe as well. The 6-6 wing added 4 rebounds, an assist, and a steal to his effort, and he will attend Hanover College and play for his father next season. The Warriors finished the season with a 25-5 record.

In the Class AAAA game, two heavyweights went to battle, with the Fishers Tigers knocking off the defending state champion Ben Davis Giants, 65-56. Junior JonAnthony Hall is known best for his defensive prowess, but he was dialed in from the tip, leading all scorers with 23 points, including 14 in the opening quarter. The 6-2 guard added 10 rebounds for the double-double, plus he dished out 2 assists and collected 2 steals in the triumph. Hall was recently named to the Indiana Junior All-Star team. Fishers finishes the year with an outstanding 29-1 record, avenging their lone loss on the year in the opening round of the Sectional.

This was the 16th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program, and the fourth season it has been presented by Franciscan Health, a corporate sponsor of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls’ winners were chosen each week of their season, through the end of the IHSAA Girls State Finals. Boys’ winners were chosen each week of their season, through today, following the IHSAA Boys State Finals.

Three boys' coaches honored by IBCA for 2023-24 season
Swan, Luce and Benter to receive Bob King Awards as boys' District Coaches of the Year

Three Indiana high school boys' basketball coaches have been chosen as 2024 Bob King Coaches of the Year by their peers in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced Monday (April 1).

Clint Swan of Class 4A regional champion Crown Point, Matt Luce of Class 2A state runner-up Wapahani and Dave Benter of Class 2A state champion Brownstown Central have been selected as honorees for the 2023-24 season through voting that occurred from late January through late March, IBCA executive director Marty Johnson said.

These three coaches will receive plaques as an IBCA District Coach of the Year during the 2024 IBCA Clinic, which is set for April 25-26 at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville.

The Coach of the Year award is named for the late Bob King, the IBCA executive director from 1984-94. King was a Lebanon native who coached at Sacred Heart and Shortridge high schools in Indianapolis before serving as an assistant basketball coach at Purdue University. He later also was as an assistant athletic director and associate athletic director at Purdue.

District 1: Clint Swan, Crown Point

Clint Swan is the IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year after directing Crown Point to a 20-6 campaign that included a co-championship of the Duneland Conference as well as titles in the Chesterton Sectional and Michigan City Regional. In 18 seasons as coach at Crown Point, his teams are 258-158 with four sectional titles (2008, 2015, 2016 and 2024) and one regional crown (2024).

Overall, Swan is 396-230 in 27 seasons with seven sectionals, four regionals and one semi-state title as a head coach. He was 83-16 from 1997-2001 at Andrean with three sectionals (1998, 1999 and 2000), three regionals (1998, 1999, 2000), one semi-state (2000) and a Class 3A state runner-up finish in 2000. Swan is a 1991 graduate of Rensselaer Central High School and a 1995 graduate of Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer.

He began his coaching career by serving as the JV coach at North Newton, Tri-County and Andrean before being named head coach at Andrean.

Swan previously was named an IBCA District 1 Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2017. He also was chosen Coach of the Year by the Gary Post-Tribune in 1998 and 2000 as well as Coach of the Year by The Times of Northwest Indiana in 1999, 2000 and 2015.

He served as head coach of the 2000 Indiana Junior All-Stars and was an assistant coach for the 2014 Indiana All-Stars. He has guided five Indiana All-Star players (Shane Power, 2000, Andrean; Brandon Crone, 2003, Frankfort; Grant Gelon, 2016, Crown Point; Sasha Stefanovic, Crown Point, 2017; A.J. Lux, Crown Point, 2023) and 16 players from all three schools who went on to play for NCAA Division I college programs. Also, seven of his former assistant coaches have gone on to become head coaches.

Swan, who was inducted into the Rensselaer Central High School Hall of Fame in 2013, is the director of the credit recovery program at Crown Point.

He and his wife, Kim, have one child – Elliot, 18, a senior on the 2023-24 Crown Point team.

District 2: Matt Luce, Wapahani

Matt Luce is the IBCA District 2 Coach of the Year after guiding Wapahani to a 26-3 season that included a Class 2A state runner-up finish. Along the way, his Raiders won the Mid-Eastern Conference, Alexandria Sectional, Lapel Regional and Lafayette Jefferson Semi-State.

In 17 seasons at Wapahani, his alma mater, Luce has compiled a 309-97 record with six sectional titles (2013, 2014, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024), two regional crowns (2023, 2024), one semi-state trophy (2024) and the 2024 runner-up finish.

Overall, Luce is 359-157 in 22 seasons as a varsity coach. That includes a 6-16 mark in 2002-03 at Southwestern (Hanover), a 14-8 finish in 2003-04 at Crawfordsville, a 30-36 ledger from 2004-07 at Benton Central and his long run of success at Wapahani.

While with the Raiders, he mentored one Indiana All-Star in Grant Evans in 2014. His teams have won nine MEC titles (2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2023, 2024) and five Delaware County Tournament crowns (2012, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2023). He also coached in the 2014 North-South Indiana All-Star Classic, and he has been named head coach for the 2024 Indiana Junior All-Stars.

A 1992 graduate of Wapahani, Luce played four years of basketball and was an Indiana All-Star in baseball. He went on to Purdue University, where he played four years of baseball and earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership in 1997 plus a bachelor’s in math education in 2001. He later earned a master’s degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2006.

Luce – from a family of coaches that includes father Mike, brothers Joe and Kris as well as nephew Tommy – began his coaching career as an assistant at Fountain Central in 1999-2001. He then was an assistant at Crawfordsville in 2001-02 before beginning his head coaching career at Southwestern (Hanover) in 2002-03.

He currently is in his ninth year as an assistant principal and athletic director at Wapahani after teaching math at the school for eight years. He also was a math teacher for the seven previous years at his earlier coaching stops.

Luce and his wife, Marie, are parents to five children – Drew, 22, a senior at Anderson University; Lauren, 19, a freshman at Purdue; Nate, 17, a junior on the current Wapahani team; and twins Emily and Megan, both 16 and sophomores on the Wapahani girls’ team.

District 3: Dave Benter, Brownstown Central

Dave Benter is the IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year after leading Brownstown Central to a 28-4 season that included the Class 2A state championship. In the process, his Braves won the Mid-Southern Conference, Southwestern (Hanover) Sectional, Washington Regional and Southport Semi-State.

In 26 seasons at Browntown, his alma mater, Benter has a 477-166 record with 12 sectional titles (2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024), four regional crowns (2004, 2009, 2023, 2024), three semi-state trophies (2004, 2009, 2024), two Class 2A state runner-up finishes (2004, 2009) and the 2024 Class 2A state crown.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Shrinking Martinsville with reported internal interest

zfot6edybdgloymxqkh0

Martinsville boys - Departing Coach Kip Staggs
MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- (Updated 3/31)
Coach/AD Staggs has announced his retirement from coaching after 11 seasons leading the Arties. Coach will remain in his AD position. Last season Martinsville went just 4-20 this season. While the last few years have been very rough for the Mid-State Conference team, a good Varsity Clubber reports the Artesians started four jrs-2-b and a sr-2-b. Not much help from JV, but middle school reportedly was above .500 and competitive within conference play. Report goes on to state improving on last year’s record probable, but Martinsville finds itself second to the bottom in terms of enrollments in the Mid-State Conference. In spite of Martinsville’s rich basketball history and recent facilities upgrades, there has been a slow but steady bleed in the number of students walking the halls. That has proven to plague them long term in conference play. To make matters worse, depending on how the numbers fall, the Arties could find themselves in the no-man’s-land of small fish in big school class Sectionals. One email reports internal interest from assistant coaches (fathers.) Current job postings: MS Science, HS Auto Shop, Eled, and HS Strength

HH Varsity Club Insider: Attica graduates quality leadership

uaigvmapt66cqx3akojx

Attica boys - Departing Coach Derrick Milenkoff
ATTICA, Ind. -- (Updated 3/31)
The Red Rambler job is now officially taking apps. Coach Milenkoff was really up against it the last few years to say the least. A simple case of good dudes, but just not enough talent resulted in a 2-22 mark last season. The two before that were 0-22 and 0-22. To say these are dark days in Attica would be an understatement. Several problems plagued recent teams. Ball handling, lack of athleticism & height, simply scoring 25-30 was a challenge in many outings. Varsity Clubber reports several nights the talent disparity was so bad, game planning for the coaching staff was all but impossible. Email points out that the Red Raiders struggled to average even 30PPG and were dropping games by an average of about the same point differential (-30PPG.) 1A Attica is a member of the Wabash River Conference: Riverton Parke, Park Heritage, South Vermillion, Fountain Central, Seeger, Covington, and North Vermillion. Varsity Clubber underlines this is a total build. Amazingly, Varsity Club report insists that the coaching staff were able to maintain a positive attitude amongst most team members. Three seniors depart, but, as one would expect, none were double digit scorers. However, reports all point to them being quality leaders, and genuinely good guys that helped keep a struggling ship headed in the right direction. Their loss will truly be impactful. Four srs-2-b are expected back and all are on paper to be three year varsity letter winners. Height tops out at a 6-1 forward. Also among them is a 5-8 guard that has maintained point duties for the last two seasons. The rest of prospective returners fall into 5-10 land. Some frosh did log varsity time last go round. Not much from a sub-500 JV. Solid numbers in feeder teams and camp turnouts. Teaching gigs stand at MS Science, HS Spanish, and Eled at this point.

Three girls coaches honored by IBCA for 2023-24 season

Thornton, May and Hinton to receive Bob King Awards as girls' District Coaches of the Year

Three Indiana high school girls basketball coaches have been chosen as 2024 Bob King Coaches of the Year by their peers in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced Thursday (March 28).

Eric Thornton of Class 3A state runner-up Norwell, Kaley May of Class 3A semi-state finalist Danville and Angie Hinton of Class A two-time state champion Lanesville have been selected as honorees for the 2023-24 season through voting that occurred from late January through late February, IBCA executive director Marty Johnson said.

Honors are awarded according to IHSAA district boundaries, and one coach from each district is a recipient – Thornton in District 1; May in District 2; and Hinton in District 3.

A list of former IBCA/Bob King Coaches of the Year in girls' basketball is below. The 2024 IBCA/Bob King Coaches of the Year for boys' basketball will be announced later.

Here is information about the 2024 IBCA/Bob King girls' Coach of the Year honorees.

District 1: Eric Thornton, Norwell

State Title Game Predictions

2023-24 State Title Games

Good evening.

Shown below are my selections for this weekend’s state final games, along with a few comments.

Semi-State Prediction Results: At the semi-state level, I picked the winner correctly at 4 of the 8 sites (50%). For all
24 games, I went 19-5 (79%). Let's see what happens tomorrow.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the games!

Dan

1A: Bethesda Christian over Ft.Wayne Canterbury......................................................by 7 points

* Bethesda was my #3 pre-tourney choice to win the southern semi-state. Canterbury was my pre-tourney #1 choice
to win the northern semi-state.
* This is the first state final appearance for both teams.
* Bethesda shoots free throws much more accurately than does Canterbury (71% to 65%). That could be significant if the game is
close .
* Both teams play fairly strong schedules compared to most 1A schools.
* After a 3-6 start, Bethesda went 20-1 for the rest of the year. Along the same lines, Canterbury started off 2-7, but then won 16 of
their final 18 games.

2A: Brownstown over Wapahani..................................................................................by 9 points

* Brownstown was my pre-tourney choice to win the 2A title. Wapahani was my #5 pre-tourney choice to win the northern semi-
state.
* The major stats for each team are amazingly close..
* Brownstown has played a much tougher schedule than Wapahani.
* Brownstown has won 18 games in a row, Wapahani 12 in a row.
* This is the first state final for Wapahani. Third appearance at this level for Brownstown. They were not successful either time.
* Brownstown appears to have a bit more size than Wapahani. and can deeper into their bench if necessary.

3A: Scottsburg over S.B.St.Joseph ......................................................................... by 3 points

* Scottsburg was my #5 pre-tourney choice to win the south semi-state. St.Joe was my #2 choice to win the north semi-state.
* Scottsburg has four key performers who are 6'4 or taller. St.Joe has just two key performers who are right at 6'4.
* Except for senior Jace Lee, all of St.Joe's major players are underclassmen.
* Scottsburg has been playing the state tourney since 1916. Incredibly, this is their first state title appearance. St.Joe has been here
two times previously--most recent in 1993. They've never won.
* Statistically speaking, Scottsburg shoots better than St.Joe at all three levels: 2 point field goals, 3 point field goals, and free throws.
* St.Joe has played a much tougher schedule.
* Scottsburg has won 17 of their last 19 games; St.Joe 14 of their last 16.

4A: Fishers over Ben Davis ....................................................................................by 5 points

* Way back on November 21st, Fishers traveled to BD and won 74-61.
* Fishers shoot both types of field goal attempts better than BD. On the other hand, BD shoots free throws much better
than Fishers; 78% to 65%.
* BD has won 13 of their last 14 games.
* Both teams play great schedules.
* Fishers was my pre-tourney choice to win the 4A title. BD was my #3 choice to win the South semi-state.
* Quite a contrast in that Fishers won their first ever sectional and has added a regional and semi-state title as well.
Ben Davis on the other hand will be making their 8th all-time finals appearance. They have won three
previous titles: 1995, 1996, 2017, and last year.

In addition to the core group, six players each were chosen to squads labeled Red Group and Blue Group.

The Red Group players are Michael Cooper of Jeffersonville, Julius Gizzi of New Palestine, JonAnthony Hall of Fishers, Cedric Horton of Richmond, Tre Singleton of Jeffersonville and Shane Sims of Evansville Harrison.

The Blue Group players are Chase Barnes of Fort Wayne Wayne, Damien King of Anderson, Chase Konieczny of South Bend Saint Joseph, Dominique Murphy of East Chicago Central, Kellen Pickett of Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian and Jack Smiley of Valparaiso.

Matt Luce of Wapahani, a Class 2A State Finalist this season, will be the head coach of the 2024 Indiana boys' Junior All-Stars. He will be assisted by Tom Wells of Michigan City.

Luce has a 309-96 record in 17 seasons at Wapahani, including a 26-2 mark heading into the '24 State Finals. In 22 seasons as a head coach, he has a 359-156 ledger with previous stops at Southwestern (Hanover), Crawfordsville and Benton Central. Over the years, Luce's teams have won six sectional titles, two regional crowns and the 2024 semi-state. Wells has a 76-46 record in five seasons at Michigan City. Overall, Wells is 402-376 in 35 seasons with earlier tenures at Prairie Heights, Griffith, Portage and LaPorte.

The Junior All-Stars will play one game against the Kentucky Junior All-Stars on Sunday, June 2 at Scottsburg's Charles E. Meyer Gymnasium. The Junior All-Stars also will play one game against the Indiana All-Star senior boys on Wednesday, June 5 at Kokomo High School. Both games will be doubleheaders with the 2024 Indiana girls' Junior All-Stars, whose roster was announced on March 4.

The players listed as Core Group players each will play in two games. The players listed in the Red and Blue groups each will play in one game, the Red Group on June 2 against the Kentucky Juniors and the Blue Group on June 5 against the Indiana Seniors.

The Indiana senior All-Stars will play the Kentucky senior All-Stars on Friday, June 7 at a site to be announced. The Indiana senior All-Stars will play Kentucky's seniors again on Saturday, June 8 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The second IndyStar Indiana All-Star "Futures Games" doubleheader will be played on Monday, June 3 at Hamilton Southeastern High School. The Futures Games will be a girls-boys doubleheader with Indiana-only squads of sophomores and freshmen in a North vs. South format. The Futures Games rosters will be announced later.

The 2024 Indiana boys' Junior All-Star team was selected through a process that allows all IBCA-member head coaches to nominate players through the IBCA all-state procedure. The IBCA 22-member Indiana Basketball Coaches Association boys' all-state committee reviewed and voted on players for the 2024 IBCA/Franciscan Health boys' All-State teams that were released on Friday (March 22).

The boys' all-state committee members also provided input to a six-person boys' Junior All-Star subcommittee appointed by IBCA executive director Marty Johnson and chaired by Brandon Bradley of Kankakee Valley. Bradley, Broughton plus coaches Ryan Abbott of Carroll (Fort Wayne), Chris Giffin of Lawrence North, Mark Rohrer of Gibson Southern and Andy Weaver of Plainfield finalized the selections for the 2024 boys' Junior All-Stars.

The Indiana Junior All-Star program was founded in 1996 by former Indiana All-Star games director Patrick Aikman. In most years, 18 players have been chosen to the Junior All-Stars. In five years (2005, 2006, 2007, 2018 and 2019), 24 players were chosen to the Junior All-Stars. In 2021, just 12 players were chosen to the Junior All-Stars.

In games from 1996 through 2023 (with no games in 2020 because of COVID-19), the Indiana Senior boys lead the Indiana Junior boys 41-11 and the Indiana Senior girls lead the Indiana Junior girls 41-11. In seven years of games against the Kentucky Juniors, the Indiana Junior boys lead 7-5 and the Indiana Junior girls lead 11-1. Games against the Kentucky Juniors previously have been played in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023.

The Indiana portion of the All-Star Games is organized and produced by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. The Indianapolis Star, with its IndyStar brand, is the title sponsor. Hoosier Shooting Academic is a presenting partner for All-Star Week. Energy Systems Group is a presenting partner of the Saturday doubleheader against Kentucky.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Hoops backseat to Volleyball at Busco

cxirov6nlawg7zojfcrx

Churubusco girls - Departing Coach David Goodwell
CHURUBUSCO, Ind. -- (Updated 3/27) It is now official Busco is accepting apps. Last year’s Eagles went 5-18, but a good Varsity Club member reports virtually all varsity production should be back. A couple of srs-2-b hit for just under 10PPG, and while several of last year’s losses were blowouts, a .500 record is not beyond a possible goal. JV described as a tic below average. No word on MS teams yet, but Varsity Clubber report the real issue that Busco battles is volleyball success. Girls basketball is a back seat sport. HS AG and Eled openings at present. Stipend $8300

HH Varsity Club Insider: Patience needed at Cambridge City

j7kupp8ivkmla0lkzxqv

Cambridge City Lincoln girls - Departing Coach Garry Laymon
CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. -- (Updated 3/27) Now official that Lincoln is open. Last season’s Eagles went 3-18 with one of their wins coming against non-IHSAA opponent. Good Varsity Club member reports cupboard is bare at the high school and even worse in the feeder program. Report goes on to suggest definitely needs some outside blood to come in and rebuild this program. This is a ground-up build and will take some patience and time. Openings as of now include MS SS and HS Strength

HH Varsity Club Insider: Covington still competitive

debrgnhym8nfptnwha7e

Covington girls - Departing Coach Mark Switzer
COVINGTON, Ind. -- (Updated 3/27) Covington is now listing this position as officially open on their website. Coach Switzer went 10-13 last year in his only season with the Trojans. Good Varsity Clubber report that roster loses several senior contributors, but there are enough srs-2-b and jrs-2b expected back to remain competitive. No true difference makers, but the underclassmen who played varsity last go-round should allow new coach to remain competitive. HS Biology and MS Sped. No timeline yet. Report of probable outside hire.
