Michigan City girls - Departing Coach Mike Megyese
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- (Updated 4/1) Coach Megyese has been a standard at Michigan City for fifteen seasons. That reportedly ended by ‘mutual decision.’ Last year they went 6-16, and Varsity Club member offers a limited report stating just about everything is gone except for would-be three-year sr-2-b starting guard Paulecia Isom. Fellow classmate 5-8 forward Divine Woods also multi-letter winner. Internal posting first, but Varsity Club member reports only assistant with any real experience (David Smoot) has a son playing and is not a teacher. Doesn’t rule him out, but obviously a factor. Above all else, Varsity Clubber insists that anyone considering applying from out of town needs to understand the dynamics of the Michigan City community. Broken homes are far more common than families that can afford to go to camps or pay for AAU teams. That is not entirely unique but it is within the Duneland Conference where the majority of the programs are operating with many of the advantages of suburbia. Another email suggests that racial tension has been an issue within the school system, and Coach Megyese was a positive factor in dealing with that where the basketball program was concerned. New coach will have to do the same to be successful. If this one does get extended to external candidates, teaching openings include HS Science, HS SS, Eled, HS Math, and MS Computer.
