HH Varsity Club Insider: Christel House just hoping for 5 Players to put on the Court

hratjdtpajcgyoozirar

Christel House girls - Departing Coach Autumn Jones
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- (Updated 4/22) This is the building that was formerly Manual High School for decades. Last year’s Eagles staggered to a 7-9 finish and did not play in Sectional. Only six players made up last season’s program, and if there is a positive here, a good Varsity Clubber reports that only one was a senior. Decent sr-2-b is on paper to come back in Alexys Turner. The 5-11 post served as last season’s captain and was good for 11PPG and 12RPG. Some decent height to go along with her if they can simply get enough kids to go out for the team and stay healthy/eligible to get through the season. Schedule has some real muffins on it, and report states there should be enough in the halls to field a squad. Should. So numbers will be number one issue facing new coach. Number two will be ball handling. Turnovers outnumbered points in several outings last season. With no bench, the Eagles played frosh and soph in the backcourt and it was rough to say the least. Christel House has two middle schools South and West. Both fielded 8th grade squads, and reportedly the West team was pretty bad. The South team was awful. Might get a player or two to fill up a jersey next year as frosh, but no help in a backcourt that begs for a ball handler - even a below average one. Christel House maintains 2A enrollment but clearly not 2A basketball interest within the student body. Manual may have a new name, but many of the same issues still facing the school that resides inside that building. Reportedly one of the tougher teaching gigs in the state of Indiana. HH Varsity Club Insider: Switzerland County with JV Coach Question

h1kytqodnumjsnc6xzbi

Switzerland County girls - Departing Coach Brooke Todd
VEVAY, Ind. -- (Updated 4/22) Coach has reportedly resigned after three winning seasons (44-29.) Most recently the Pacers were 13-12. However, the core of that group is graduating coinciding with Coach’s departure. Three-year starting guard Bri Stow is a holdover that should help new coach in several capacities. An undefeated JV squad should supply enough to keep the Pacers competitive. 5-7 is about it for post play. Varsity Club member reports 8th grade solid - won Tri-County Tourney. 7th grade also competitive, finished 13-8. Report adds SC had a gym update this season - New floor which is top notch and wall art. Mixed reports on viability of internal candidate, JV Coach Chase Kelso. Kelso’s daughter is jr-2-b. Coaching stipend $6200. Openings include: HS Library (treated as teaching job,) HS English, and HS History.

HH Varsity Club Insider: New Haven boys may need the Portal

quvvfh7freuih9ruzuua

New Haven boys - Departing Coach Bruce Stephens
NEW HAVEN, Ind. -- (Updated 4/22) Last season the Bulldogs were 7-17, but good Varsity Club member reports that means zero. While the transfer portal may not be an official thing yet in Indiana high school basketball, a case could be made that New Haven is piloting the program. Last season’s expected roster saw player come in and another depart. This spring will see nearly every contributor graduate (six) except for 5-11 jr-2-b 2-guard Jadrien Ezell. 6-2 Lavell Ledbetter logged some time as a varsity frosh. And 6-1 swing Da’marcus Wrightgot some time as a soph. Even if all those players return, barring another transfer, the Bulldogs will have an uphill battle with their Fort Wayne schedule. The Northeast 8 Conference does them no favors either: Norwell, Leo, Huntington North, Belmont, Columbia City, East Noble, and DeKalb. However, one thing working in New Haven’s favor is their drop from 4A to 3A for the state tourney. The Bulldogs have won 6 Sectionals all-time since 1922 and only two this century (2013 and 2017.) Teaching jobs coming but as of now, Varsity Clubber reports only the coveted Instructional Coach position open.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Lakeland boys return Four Starters

antknefzusgcihqdlfnq

Lakeland boys - Departing Coach Chris Keil
LaGrange, Ind. -- (Updated 4/22) Good Varsity Club member reports that Coach Keil has stepped down after four seasons 47-47.) Most recently the Lakers were 17-7 and won their first Northeast Corner Conference title since 2010 . Only one senior departs and press release from school touts four returning starters and over 25 boys in the high school program. Good varsity Clubber reports that senior was all-conference and leading scorer 20PPG and rebounder. Yes, they should return four starters, and all are solid varsity players (7-9PPG,) but that lone loss will be felt. JV Coach Jeremy Merrifield is a Lakeland guy and has success at middle school, then JV levels. Current crop of underclassmen that are contributing are his guys. If they go outside, Lakeland is looking for Eled and HS Media.

AAU Game times

Seeing all of these Twitter posts of AAU game time on Friday in Ohio, Texas, Virginia, etc.....several have 9:00 AM games. Am I incorrect in my thinking that those kids should be in school? Also, I was under the impression that there was an IHSAA rule/guideline stipulating that you could not participate in an AAU event during the school day. They cannot prevent you from traveling, but playing during the day?

HH Varsity Club Insider: Mishawaka gals now open

m4dpz0ujkdcolpkoxupk

Mishawaka girls - Departing Coach Chadd Blasko

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- (Updated 4/18) Now official the Cavemen job is open. Coach Blasko went 42-51 in the last five years. Last season Mishawaka finished 11-13. Cavemen lose their leading scorers via graduation and return almost nothing in terms of proven varsity level production. A handful of sophs-2-b have shown promise - Arguably the best is 5-2 PG Millie Mammolenti. Height tops out at about 5-9 for remaining Cavemen in the post. JV was reportedly ‘blowd-out’ on many nights. No word on middle school squads yet, but emails have been sent out. Varsity Club report states that it deserves mention that the state tournament has been an absolute nightmare for Mishawaka. The last Sectional title came all the way back in the mid-90’s. Teaching openings include Eled, HS Science-Bio, and multiple Sped.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Early names at Knightstown boys opening

y5icggn1mjap2c0p7dgz

Knightstown boys - Departing Coach Chris VanPelt
KNIGHTSTOWN , Ind. -- (Updated 4/18)
Now official that Coach VanPelt will not be returning for a second year. The Panthers were 11-12 last season and reportedly very competitive. Good Varsity Club member reports an overly active group of parents reportedly never wanted Coach from the start and truly never gave him a chance. In classic small school Indiana fashion, allegedly even the superintendent was involved. It’s not the first time politics have submarined the team chemistry of a young coach in Knightstown. Likely will not be the last either as this has become an accepted norm here. Report continues that four of the top six graduate. Considering the Panthers only return about 9PPG in total, incoming coach may want to insist on more than a one-year contract. JV was 15-5 last year and good Varsity Club member reports JV Coach Quin Schneider as a viable option from within. Another outside name being bantered about is Brian Klein formerly at BRV. HS Math and Eled are only teaching options at this point.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Red Flags blowing in the wind over Rensselaer

i4dwfqxzywmcdkibz4y0

Rensselaer boys - Departing Coach Chad Pulver
RENSSELAER, Ind. -- (Updated 4/17)
Red flags flapping.. Already numerous Varsity Club reports involving selfish families/players and a school board willing to bend an ear. For the record, Coach Pulever helped bring the Bombers their first Sectional title in 17 years only two seasons ago. For perspective they’ve only enjoyed three Sectional titles in the last 50 years. Also led them to the school’s first Hoosier Conference Championship in 2023 (Ham Hts, Western, Logan, Tipton, Benton Central, Lafayette Catholic, West Lafayette, and Twin Lakes.) Coach went 92-75 during his seven years there. Not enough for the board to extend his contract. Aside from a ridiculously cool and politically incorrect mascot, Rensselaer has been a poster child for mediocrity. What exactly would a Rensselaer school board like to see in terms of results? Great question. The 2A Bombers reportedly graduate a bunch, but are expected to return last year’s leading scorer in 6-1 sr-2-b guard Corbin Mathew (16PPG, 5RPG.) 6-5 classmate and post Bryan Camarena (7PPG) is the other experienced holdover. JV is described as below average. All told, the sum of next year’s parts is less than what the Bombers put on the floor last year. Getting enough wins to keep the board happy will be a chore. Unless, it only takes minutes of certain players to keep them happy(?) Here’s hoping the incoming coach can solve this riddle before this school corp can further impact another livelihood. For what it’s worth, last year’s 8th grade decent. 7th was about .500. If a Varsity Bomber coach would be around long enough to engage last year’s 6th graders.. They had a winning record. MS Science, MS SS, MS ELA, and HS Spanish.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Beech Grove boys welcome 9(!) srs-2-b

i5mmjgstmrlxezc9f5gz

Beech Grove boys - Departing Coach Joe Rihm
BEECH GROVE, Ind. -- (Updated 3/15) This from Indy Star’s Kyle Neddenriep: Joe Rihm steps down as Beech Grove basketball coach. Will stay on as assistant athletic director. Rihm was 22-26 in two seasons. This was a rebuilding year for the Hornets with a young team that finished 5-19. Varsity Club member indicates only one senior graduates and an unusual grouping of nine srs-2-b on paper ready for incoming coach. The lone senior leader will be missed, but it was primarily scoring by committee already. His 10PPG can likely be made-up for. However, it is noted that no other Hornets averaged double figures last go round. Not a ton of height as a couple of 6-3’s is about it in the post. Still, Varsity Club member reports that the Hornets are athletic and can cause problems for the opposition. Also a report that some parents have caused problems for the home team as well, but such could be said of most high school teams in our great state. TOpping last year's win total very achievable given another year with this group. JV reported as average and 8th grade pretty solid. Reports all speak highly of admin and working atmosphere. HS PE and Upper Eled SS is it for now in terms of teaching gigs. Internal interest expected. Stipend: $8100.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Tough Times ahead at South Adams

uw89e7atrf8oxq8aw8hw

South Adams boys - Departing Coach Garrett Krieg
BERNE, Ind. -- (Updated 4/17) Coach Krieg has really been up against it talent-wise, and the won-less records have reflected that. Last year was especially rough as the Starfires managed just 3 wins. According to Varsity Club report, about half of that squad graduates, but there may a bit of light for new coach. Getting to .500 will be a tough row to hoe. However, at least 6-3 jr-2-b guard Tytus Lehman (15PPG, 5RPG) is expected back as last year’s leading scorer and rebounder. Three other underclassmen logged substantial varsity time as well, but without a great deal of stat contribution. Almost nothing expected from a very limited JV roster. Report also states that no world beaters at middle school level either. Simply put..tough going at South Adams for a while. Several Eled positions and deserves mention that SA has also posted their girls coaching job as well.

HH Varsity Club Insider: BNL Hire opens Eminence

vnlklimedmirnrvcf7rw

Eminence girls - Departing Coach Greg Burton
EMINENCE, Ind. -- (Updated 4/17)
Coach Burton departs to accept the BNL job. Coach enjoyed two winning seasons with the Eels going 17-7 and most recently 19-8. Good Varsity Club member reports that Eminence regularly played eight girls at the varsity level, and six of them will be departing seniors this spring. 6-1 sr-2-b post Sophia Saucerman (14PPG, 6RPG) is the main returner. 5-2 jr-2-b Abby Dittemore logged some guard minutes last season but never was asked to carry much load in pressure situations. Even with a Saucerman return, by most accounts this will be a rebuild. However, reports points to enough muffins on the schedule to rack-up some wins and avoid a disaster season. Help is on the way as report indicated middle school squad was conference champs last season. Eel tank is one of the cooler old gyms in our state. Teaching gigs are very thin. Eled Sped so far is all the Eels have open.

Speaker adjustments made in 2024 IBCA Clinic lineup

Two recently appointed college head coaches also will serve as replacement speakers at the 2024 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association annual clinic, it was announced Monday (April 16).

Pat Kelsey, new men’s coach at the University of Louisville, and Hannah Varel, new women’s coach at Transylvania University, have been added to the lineup for the IBCA’s annual event that is set for April 25-26 at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville.

Kelsey is taking the leadoff spot on April 25 in place of Kansas University coach Bill Self, who is unable to appear because of a last-minute scheduling conflict. Self has committed to being an in-person speaker at the 2025 IBCA Clinic.

Varel is stepping into the lineup on April 26 on behalf of former Transylvania women’s coach Juli Fulks, who last week was named the new women’s head coach at Marshall University.

Kelsey has been highly successful in 12 seasons as a head coach, including the last three seasons at College of Charleston and the previous nine seasons at Winthrop University. The former Xavier University player and assistant coach boasts a .681 win percentage (261-122) and four NCAA Tournament appearances in his head coaching career, including a 27-8 mark and NCAA Tournament berth this past season at Charleston.

Varel becomes a first-time head coach after serving as associate head coach at Transylvania last season and a TU assistant coach the previous three seasons. Over the past four seasons, she helped guide the Pioneers to a 105-8 record. That impressive 92.9 win percentage included a 31-1 mark and NCAA Division III national semifinal appearance this past season, a 33-0 undefeated Division III championship in 2022-23 and a 27-1 ledger and Division III national quarterfinal spot in 2021-22. Varel previously was an a women’s assistant coach at Hanover College.

The remainder of the 2024 IBCA Clinic two-day lineup remains as originally announced – Indiana Fever coach Christie Sides, Notre Dame men’s coach Micah Shrewsberry, Michigan men’s coach Dusty May, Michigan women’s coach Kim Barnes Arico, Evansville men’s coach David Ragland and Bellarmine men’s coach Scott Davenport.
