24 Misunderstood Rules in High School Basketball !!!

The IBCA sent this out, and I really like the idea! This was taken from an AD / basketball official in Iowa that attaches this to his game programs in an attempt to educate fans at games. Think - Idiot screaming his head off from the bleachers about something that is completely wrong. Have I been said idiot? There might have been a time or two :)

At least this way, even if the poor sap doesn't read this in the program, there will be others around him that can know shake their head at him knowingly. (Also me :)

24 Misunderstood Rules in High School Basketball

1. There is NO 3-second count between the release of a shot and the control of a rebound, at which time a new countstarts. Also, when a post player catches and makes a scoring move toward the goal, the 3-second count is suspended—if they pass it out of the lane after more than 3 seconds of making a basketball move, then we have a 3-second call.

2. A player can go out of bounds, return inbounds, and be the first to touch the ball! Comment: This is not the NFL. You can be the first to touch a ball if you were out of bounds.

3. There is NO such thing as “over the back”. There must be contact resulting in an advantage/disadvantage. Do not put a tall player at a disadvantage merely for being tall

4. “Reaching” is NOT a foul. There must be contact and the player with the ball must have been placed at a disadvantage.

5. A player can always recover his/her fumbled ball; a fumble is not a dribble, and any steps taken during recovery are not traveling, regardless of progress made and/or advantage gained! (Running while fumbling is not traveling!)Comment: You can fumble a pass, recover it, and legally begin a dribble. This is not a double dribble. If the playerbats the ball to the floor in a controlling fashion, picks the ball up, and then begins to dribble, you now have aviolation.

6. It is not possible for a player to travel while dribbling. A player on the ground is NOT traveling. They can slide on their back/stomach as far as they want to, it only becomes traveling if they stand up or roll over WITH possession of the ball. The butt/stomach/back can all be pivot points and must come off of the ground to become traveling!

7. A high dribble is always legal provided the dribbler’s hand stays on top of the ball, and the ball does not come to rest in the dribbler’s hand. An ugly high dribble is NOT carrying the basketball, it's just ugly! Comment: The key is whether or not the ball is at rest in the hand.

8. A “kicked” ball must be intentional, and contact must be any part of the leg. Comment: MUST be intentional. We miss this too many times at the lower levels.

9. It is perfectly legal for a player to rebound his/her airball, provided the official deemed the shot a legitimate shot.

10. It is impossible to travel, double dribble, or carry while taking the ball out for a throw-in. At times, officials tell athletes they can't move on a throw-in. Why? This is not a rule. You have limitations, but you can move.Comment: They must stay over the spot laterally.

11. A defender does not have to “give the dribbler a step”. As long as legal guarding position has been established, itis up to the dribbler to avoid contact. The person with the ball should expect to be guarded.Comment: A legal guarding position is the key. Time and distance are not an issue when guarding someone with the ball

12. The sides, top, and bottom of a rectangular backboard are IN BOUNDS. 5 of the 6 sides are in bounds.

13. Jumpers may tap the ball simultaneously; may tap the ball twice; and when a legally tapped ball touches the floor,a player other than a non-jumper or (believe it or not) a backboard, the jump ball has ended, and either jumper may recover it!

14. A 10-second count continues when the defense deflects or bats the ball.Comment: The count ceases only when possession changes.

15. Any unsportsmanlike contact during a dead ball is a technical foul!16. A "moving screen" isn't a violation unless there is contact. (If contact occurs, it’s a “BLOCK”)

17. Any contact foul during a live ball is personal, not technical! Comment: The contact can be flagrant, but never technical.

18. Basketball is NOT a non-contact sport. Incidental contact does occur, and contact which does not create an advantage/disadvantage may be ignored. Contact on the shooter should be called. Comment: This is our bread and butter. Purely judgment. Understanding the flow of the game and the teams that are playing are paramount in you being able to determine correctly what is and what is not a foul.

19. A defensive player does not have to be stationary to take a charge he or she simply must have established a legal guarding position. The defense can move backward and sideways. Comment: Legal guarding position (2 feet on the floor and the torso facing the opponent) must be established.

20. An intentional foul is always penalized with 2 free throws, except on a missed 3-point shot, which is awarded 3 free throws. On a made 3, they receive 2 shots, yes 2 shots for a made 3.

21. When an airborne shooter commits a player control foul, his/her successful try for a goal cannot be allowed, regardless of whether the try was released before or after the foul!

22. Lifting the pivot foot does not constitute a travel unless the ball handler puts the pivot foot back on the floor before beginning a passing, or shooting the ball! The pivot foot cannot be lifted before the dribble is started.

23. It is NOT goaltending if, after contacting the backboard, the ball is touched by a defensive player, provided the ball has not reached its apex and it is not inside the cylinder. Comment: It is legal for a defender in the normal course of trying to block a shot, to contact the backboard with his hand. This is not basket interference. It is a technical foul only if, in your judgment, the contact with the backboard was intentional with no real attempt to block the shot.

24. For it to be over and back. All 3 parts must be in the front court. All 3 parts are the ball handler's feet and theball.Comment: The ball handler can straddle the half court line and pivot into the backcourt multiple times or have both feet in the front court while still dribbling in the backcourt. ALL 3 PARTS MUST BE ACROSS HALF COURT BEFORE YOU CAN HAVE OVER-AND-BACK!

25. NOT a rule but: Officials call fouls, they do NOT count them.

Also, South Knox, which went 4-0 for the week and now is 5-0 overall, is the IBCA/Ballogy Team of the Week in a new portion of the IBCA recognition program for 2024-25.

Players of the Week are cited by IHSAA District – Barnes for District 1, Hosier for District 2 and Renn for District 3. A single Team of the Week is cited for the entire state in the new part of the recognition program. Players and teams are recognized based on all performances in a Monday through Saturday week.

Hosier was cited after leading Alexandria to a 2-0 week to improve to 5-0 for the season and Fort Wayne South (51-20). The University of Vermont recruit opened with 34 points with 10 rebounds, four assists, 10 steals as the Tigers defeated Delta 65-45. The 5-8 guard followed with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and 13 steals in a 51-20 triumph over Fort Wayne South. Hosier’s scoring output moved her career total to 1,559 points, passing 1996 graduate Rachel Garner (1,517) for third place on the school’s all-time list. Hosier now trails only 2005 graduate Jodi Howell (2,026) and 2003 graduate Jackie Closser (1,590).

Barnes, a 5-10 guard, helped Valparaiso to a 1-1 week with a 77-70 loss to Class 4A No. 8 South Bend Washington and a 72-31 victory over Hammond Noll. In the first game, Barnes scored 32 points with six rebounds, seven assists and five steals. In the latter game, she tallied 26 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals as the Vikings improved to 2-2 for the season. For the week, Barnes converted 23-of-41 field goals, 1-of-5 3-pointers and 11-of-14 free throws.

Renn propelled Silver Creek to a 2-0 week and a 3-0 overall mark. The 6-3 forward tallied 21 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, two steals and four blocked shots in a 55-28 victory at Seymour. She then tallied 30 points (on 11-of-11 shooting) with three rebounds and three assists as the Dragons defeated Jennings County 59-47. For the week, Renn was 18-of-24 from the field, 2-of-3 from deep and 13-of-15 from the line.

South Knox, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, was selected IBCA/Ballogy Team of the Week after going 4-0 for the week to improve to 5-0 for the season. Coach Hollie Anson-Eaves' Spartans opened with a 62-44 victory over Class 3A No. 3 Washington, then followed by going 3-0 to win the Cluckers Battle at the First Capital invitational at Corydon Central. In the tournament, South Knox defeated New Albany 74-47, host Corydon Central 56-48 and, coincidentally playing the same opponent twice in one week, 3A No. 3 Washington 64-55. Sophomore Kendal Hill paced a balanced attack for the Spartans, averaging 16.0 points for the four games. Seniors Ella Bobe and Bren Hill each averaged 14.0 points for the week.

This is the 17th season for the IBCA Player of the Week program and the fifth season the awards are being presented by Franciscan Health Sports Medicine, an IBCA corporate partner. This is the first season for the IBCA Team of the Week program. The Team of the Week program is presented by Ballogy, another IBCA corporate partner.

Here we go again.. North Knox 85, Washington Catholic 4

I have yet to track down a newspaper game story or box score for this one yet. Neither the Washington Times-Herald nor the Vincennes Sun-Commercial have a game account - At least I haven't found it yet.

I did find the YouTube video of the game, and it is just as rough as you'd think. For those that have never seen a game in Washington Catholic's historic Birdcage, might be worth click just to check out the venue. It really is great.

For the record, I flat out love the WC Logo. However... that cardinal is the Heisman pose, and WC doesn't play football. Still though, it's cool enough for me to overlook it.

Last season's 1A Washington Catholic squad was winless, at 0-21. They managed just under 17ppg last year, and are already 0-2 on this young season.

Past history between these two schools would lead all involved to expect this year's outcome.

Attucks Legend Willie Merriweather crazy rebound numbers

I have finally been able to track down and verify a career total for rebounds for Crispus Attucks high flyer, Willie Merriweather. The Big O's team mate's career total is second only to Kent Benson. It's interesting that while rebounding was very valued as an important aspect of our game during the 1950's era, it was seldom listed in the box scores. Meriweather was a prime example. Time and again Coach Crowe would be quoted in game stories lauding his rebounding prowess and specifically mentioning its impact on the Tigers' win. However, specific numbers have been tough to come by.

I am still trying to run down exact year-by-year totals.

Funny thing - he is listed some places to be as tall as 6-4, but consensus is the high-flyer was far closer to 6-2. His Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame entry splits the difference and has him at 6-3. Truly didn't matter as he was one of the greatest rebounders Indiana has ever known.

Oscar Robertson #43 in back row was reportedly just a shade under 6-5 in high school. Will Merriweather standing to his right #24. 6-2?

Girls Numbers

So today most girls coaches received an email about considering in the future moving back the start of the girls season to either start at same time as boys or closer. The hope, mentioned, was that a later date would encourage more kids to play if they got a break. Issues I see with this is many:
1. The first three weeks of the season is strictly girls and they get more prime time games.
2. Gym time is already tough at small schools, let alone having JHigh, Varsity Boys, and Varsity Girls starting at the same time.
3. If they start at same time then tourney will be at same time. Kids will not be able to get to the other genders tourney and there will be some really bad officials getting tourney and it will be girls that take the hit.
4. I coach at a small school and whether we started two weeks ago or after Christmas our numbers would be the same and will be worse next year. It is a North issue as well. Bottom line for us. Kids do mnot want to play. We have in Jr. high 2 8th, 3 7th, 3 6th.
5. As far as a break for kids, We offer them the first week off. So they do have a chance to get a break.

What are other's thoughts?

No Boys basketball team this year at Smith Academy

r1wfg6rs5xgja8b17zpi

Smith Academy AD, Gary Merrell reports the Fighting 54th will not field a boys team this season. They do not have enough high school boys interested in playing basketball. Yep, you read that right. The 1A school in Ft. Wayne has cancelled their 2024-25 season.

Merrell adds they do have a good group of middle school athletes and plan to be back in 2025-26.

One player who averaged 32.0 points and tied a school record for steals, another player who averaged 31.5 points and surpassed 1,000 career points and a third player who averaged just shy of a double-double have been selected as Week 1 winners in the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week program for 2024-25.

Sophomore Kenzie Koch of Eastern Hancock, junior Brynn Owens of Austin and junior Laniah Davis of Marquette Catholic have been cited for outstanding performances during the week of Nov. 4-9 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Also, Center Grove, which defeated a pair of ranked teams during the week, is the first IBCA/Ballogy Team of the Week in a new portion of the IBCA recognition program for 2024-25.

Players of the Week are cited by IHSAA District – Davis for District 1, Koch for District 2 and Owens for District 3. A single Team of the Week is cited for the entire state in the new part of the recognition program. Players and teams are recognized based on all performances in a Monday through Saturday week.

Koch, a 5-9 guard, is honored after averaging 32.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 6.3 steals in a 3-0 week for Eastern Hancock. She opened with 30 points, one rebound, four assists and tied a single-game school record with 13 steals in a 76-3 victory over Wes-Del. She tallied 30 points with seven rebounds, four assists and one steal as the Eagles topped Clarksville 62-16. She then provided 33 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals while moving her career scoring total to 1,006 points in a 65-31 victory over South Ripley. For the week, Owens converted 21-of-41 shots, 10-of-19 3-pointers and 11-of-13 free throws.

Davis, also a 5-7 guard, averaged 18.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.3 steals as Class A Marquette Catholic went 1-2 against three Class 4A opponents. Davis scored 20 points with seven rebounds, two assists and three steals in a 66-26 victory over South Bend Adams. She followed with 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists and four steals in a 42-31 setback to Lake Central. Davis then netted 22 points with 13 rebounds and two assists as the Blazers dropped a 58-53 overtime decision to McCutcheon. Davis hit 24-of-63 field goals, 2-of-11 3-pointers and 6-of-9 free throws during the week.

Center Grove (2-0), No. 5 in the IBCA preseason poll, was named IBCA/Ballogy Team of the Week after it defeated then-No. 7 Franklin Central 44-39 and then-No. 8 Fishers in a pair of road contests. Balance was key in against the Flashes as junior Gracyn Gilliard scored 13 points, senior Lilly Bischoff tallied 12 points (with three assists), senior Emerson Vlcan netted nine points (with seven rebounds) and senior Ava Grant had seven points. Against Fishers, Grant sank four 3-pointers en route to 16 points and Gilliard added 15 points for eighth-year Trojans’ coach Kevin Stuckmeyer.

Winners are chosen each week in the Player of the Week program from each of the IHSAA's three districts, and one Team of the Week is selected from the entire state. The IBCA will begin boys’ Player and Team of the Week honors on Dec. 3. Former Brownsburg girls’ coach Debbie Smiley oversees the selection of girls’ honorees. Former Martinsville boys’ coach Kip Staggs will oversee the selection of boys’ honorees.

Coaches may nominate players and teams via buttons on the IBCA website (in.nhsbca.org). Coaches must be a current-year member for their players and/or team to be selected for a weekly award.

Girls' winners are chosen from now through Monday following the IHSAA girls' State Finals. Boys' winners are chosen from Dec. 2 through the Monday following the IHSAA boys' State Finals.

Way OT: Pioneer era Corduroy Road discovered at Edinburgh damn site

For those familiar with the old damn in Edinburgh (or just those that are students of history) 1830’s era Corduroy road uncovered. Very cool!

Yes, I am a certified history nerd.

I know this is a basketball space above all else, but always a bit for all things Indiana.

OT: Adam Howard fired at IU (The In-State recruiting guy)

Weird timing for sure. I know he is probably considered a mid-level assistant at best, but he was named a recruiting coordinator, and I only mention this because he was really the only true Indiana connection to our preps.

Always a slow churn of drama now in Bloomington. For those of us that like to see actual Hoosiers on the roster, this might be a step back.

Updated list of 1000 Point Scorers for Boys and Girls!

The IBCA boys' list has players listed as far back as Roy Burris, a 1921 graduate of Washington with 1,124 points, and Don Shelton, a 1921 Crawfordsville graduate with 1,005 points. Shelton compiled his total in three seasons, ending in 1920.

Other early members of the boys' 1,000-Point Club include Fuzzy Vandivier (Franklin Community 1922) with 1,597 points; Lloyd Wampler (Vincennes Lincoln 1922) with 1,205 points; Clement Crowe (Lafayette Jeff 1922) with 1,048 points; Bennie Devol (Lebanon 1923) with 1,167 points; Wilbur Cummins (Frankfort 1925) with 1,140 points; Karl "Knobby" Dickerson (Crawfordsville 1925) with 1,020 points; Vic Gibbens (Clay City 1926) with 1,500 points; Matt Joris (Muncie Central 1927) with 1,077 points; Elton Christensen (San Pierre 1927) with 1,031 points; and Lloyd Williams (Goshen 1929) with 1,174 points.

The girls' list contains three 1976 graduates as the inaugural members -- Rochelle "Shelly" Newell of Rochester (1,250 points), Judi Warren of Warsaw (1,232 points) and Pam Jones of Scottsburg (1,095 points). Other early members of the girls' list include seven 1977 graduates -- Jennifer Voreis of North Judson (1,247 points), Teri Rosinski of Norwell (1,210 points), Dru Cox of Plainfield (1,175 points), Sharon Schreyer of Lewis Cass (1,163 points), Cindy Piet of Scottsburg (1,135 points), Melinda Miles of Bloomfield (1,045 points), Rhonda Martin of Southwood (1,028 points) and Janice McCracken of Vincennes Lincoln (1,012 points).

The total boys' list currently contains 3,982 players. The current girls' list contains 2,339 players.

Players listed in black type have completed their high school careers. Players listed in red type are players who are active in the 2024-25 season and will add to their totals. There are a number of active players (shaded in green at the bottom of the girls' list; shaded in yellow at the bottom of the boys' list) with fewer than 1,000 points. These players -- and others, as that portion is not a comprehensive list -- enter the 2024-25 season with a chance to reach 1,000 points.

If a player played at more than one high school, the first school listed is the last school at which the player played. On the boys' list, for players from schools that no longer exist, a school name in parenthesis generally is the current school into which the closed school was consolidated. An example of this is: "Marion Pierce, Lewisville (Tri)."

The IBCA began compiling a boys' list of 1,000-point scorers at the end of the 1979-80 season. Junior Mannies started an Indiana high school record book at that time, and his initial list of 1,000-point scorers included 357 players. Mannies compiled the list for two more years until passing away in 1983. Gene Milner took over the compilation of the boys' 1,000-point scorers list in 1982-83. Milner, currently the IBCA's annual record book editor and website coordinator, has overseen the boys' 1,000-Point Club listing for the past 42 years.

The IBCA decided to compile a statewide girls' list of 1,000-point scorers in January 2022 when there was an inquiry for both boys' and girls' lists, and no such list was available for girls.

Hundreds of people have assisted in the compilation of both lists. Many thanks to all coaches, former coaches, athletic administrators, media members and various school, conference and county historians who have contributed to this effort.

IBCA officials realize that both lists are incomplete. Also, both lists have some players where an exact total for some players may need to be clarified. Still, these are the best, most complete lists we have at this time. These lists will be updated as appropriate, if corrections from past seasons are found. The lists, of course, will be updated at least one time annually at the end of each season with the new players who reach the 1,000-point milestone in the given season.

If anyone has information that can help us correct, update or add information for anyone, please email information to Pat McKee at patmckee77@aol.com.
