HH Varsity Club Insider: Buyer beware at North Miami

North Miami boys - Departing Coach Ryan DeMien
DENVER, Ind. – (Updated 5/28) North Miami has officially posted this position now and is reportedly wanting to move quickly. Last year’s roster reportedly loses three graduating seniors. Varsity Club report insists all three were varsity regulars, but Jacob Riley’s loss will be felt the most. His 22PPG and 7RPG were key to any success the 8-15 Warriors had last season. TO be clear, it’s been 15 years since North Miami has sniffed a winning season. Also deserves mention that North Miami has earned B.E.S.T. honors and nominations several years including siding with flat out lazy kids over Hall of Fame Coach Basil Mawbey. Coach chose to leave rather than spend time with players that wouldn’t work, wouldn’t listen and were supported by the Board in their laziness. (2019-2020 season) And this sort of mindset has established a long term losing program that several professional coaches have not been able to turn around. The 1A Warriors last cut down Sectional nets in 2011. Since then it’s been 14 straight first round Sectional exits. On the positive side, report indicates five underclassmen return with varsity experience, and some have shown signs of taking the next step. 5-8 sr-2-b guard Lake Musall was good for about 9PPG last year and is a three-sport athlete. So too, is 6-2 classmate Ryan Meredith (5PPG.) Last year’s JV was 9-11, and Varsity Club report points to a couple of players that will likely make the jump to varsity next year for new coach. Eled only opening at this point. Stipend: $8000

HH Varsity Club Insider: 3A roster in name only that refuses to guard anybody seeks Coach

Frankfort boys - Departing Coach Jake Nerney
FRANKFORT, Ind. – (Updated 6/4) Coach Nerney has resigned after one season with the Hotdogs. It was a rough one, as Frankfort went just 2-22. The 3A Hotdogs are reportedly anything but a 3A school when it comes to basketball-type enrollment, and it shows. Their last Sectional title was 12 years ago, and while several of the ensuing seasons have seen competitive rosters take the floor, 500 has been a celebrated achievement. All that being said, Varsity Club report insists that next year could be a pretty decent bounce back. Or at least a vast improvement over 2-wins. Yes, the Hotdogs graduate five seniors, but in this particular case, not such a bad thing. Two 5-10 srs-2-b are set to return that each hit for about 10PPG last season logging extensive varsity minutes. A 6-2 jr-2-b also on paper to return who was good for another 8PPG. Trouble comes when addressing post defense as 6-2 is about it for the whole program right now. Actually defense in general has been an issue as Frankfort gave up about 70PPG last season. JV was just as awful as you think it is playing under a 2-win varsity squad. Zero help expected from there. Still improvement over last year’s W-L mark is possible. Varsity Clubber reports there were 3-4 games that were close enough to win last season, but last year’s group didn’t want to guard anybody. Ridiculously great gym. Openings aplenty: HS Math, HS English, MS Counselor, MS English, MS Math, Sped at all levels, Eled.

Sectional 62 Just Got Better

As everyone here knows, Sectional 62 is the pinnacle of boys' small school basketball in Indiana. This sectional is the home of 4 schools (Barr-Reeve, Loogootee, North Daviess and Orleans) which have hung Boys' State Championship Banners and 3 coaches (Dalrymple, Thompson and Bradley) who wear a Blue Ring. Coach Howington adds another brilliant coaching mind to this illustrious group. Besides the obvious " win this sectional and you are an automatic state contender " ... the regular season rivalries just got even more intense with the coaching changes and Orleans being the defending champion. How long do we have to wait for the season to start ?

Just thinking - - Wouldn't this 4-team classic sell-out the Hatchet House over Thanksgiving ! Not a good thing for the coaches tho !

A little more on Tri High returnees

Fields set for 2025 IBCA/IHSAA Team Showcase events (112 girls Teams) & (196 boys Teams)

Fields set for 2025 IBCA/IHSAA Team Showcase events

Third girls’ event June 13-14 at Fishers, HSE; sixth boys' event June 20-22 at Carmel, Westfield

More than 100 girls' teams and nearly 200 boys' teams are set to participate in the 2025 IBCA/IHSAA Team Showcase events in June.

The third IBCA/IHSAA girls' Team Showcase is set for June 13-14 at Fishers High School, Fishers Junior High and Hamilton Southeastern High School, while the sixth IBCA/IHSAA boys' Team Showcase in memory of Charlie Hughes is planned for June 20-22 at Carmel High School, Westfield High School and Westfield Middle School.

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and the IHSAA partner to make each Showcase a "scholastic event" under NCAA and National Federation of State High School Associations rules, thereby making the events open for NCAA Division I coaches to attend in person for purposes of evaluating prospective players. Only events sanctioned by the IHSAA and IBCA may have NCAA Division I coaches attend during this "scholastic recruiting period."

The IBCA also works with Charlie Hughes Basketball in managing both events. Craig Lyon of Charlie Hughes Basketball coordinates with IBCA chief operating officer Tom Beach in making game schedules, hiring officials, securing game facilities (events may be played in only IHSAA-member facilities) and assists, if needed, in housing arrangements.

As of today (May 21), 112 girls' teams and 196 boys' teams are scheduled to play in these events.

Participating teams generally play four games in the events, although some teams choose for a one-day option where they play just two games. Each contest in these events is a regulation 32-minute stop-clock game, not a running-clock game like in many other summer events. No team plays more than two games in one day.

Teams are assigned a pool based on competitive play (organizers attempt to have teams play four competitive games against a "similar" team), regardless of whether a team's coach selects the one-day or two-day option. Organizers also try to avoid teams playing opponents they typically play during the regular season.

These Team Showcase events are not tournaments, and no champions are determined. However, these Team Showcase events offer four competitive games to help each team develop while also allowing college coaches to watch the games in person.

The two-day girls' event begins at 9:00 a.m. June 13 with final games starting at 8:00 p.m. June 14. Games are at Fishers High School, 13000 Promise Rd., Fishers, IN 46038; Fishers Junior High, 13257 Cumberland Rd., Fishers, IN 46038; and Hamilton Southeastern High School, 12499 Olio Rd., Fishers, IN 46037. A list of registered teams is below.

The three-day boys' event begins at noon June 20 with final games starting at 4:00 p.m. June 22. Games are at Carmel High School, 520 E. Main St., Carmel, IN 46032; Westfield High School, 18250 N. Union St., Westfield, IN 46074; and Westfield Middle School, 345 W. Hoover St., Westfield, IN 46074. A list of registered teams is below.

Game schedules for both events may be found on the Exposure App, once they are finalized.

Both IBCA/IHSAA Team Showcase events are open to the public. Admission is $10 per day for adults, $5 per day for students (ages 6 to 17) and free for children (5 and younger). IBCA members are admitted free by showing their membership card at the door.

The IBCA and IHSAA began working with Charlie Hughes Basketball in the fall of 2018 when the NCAA created a "scholastic" period in its men's basketball recruiting calendar for June 2019. Charlie Hughes Basketball had started a summer boys' basketball school-team developmental event in 2005 and ran it successfully for 14 years. The event was renamed in Hughes' memory after he passed away in December 2014.

In 2024, 59 coaches from 52 colleges attended the second IBCA/IHSAA Girls' Team Showcase, while 129 coaches from 91 colleges attended the fifth IBCA/IHSAA Boys' Team Showcase in memory of Charlie Hughes.

Net proceeds from both Team Showcase events support the IBCA Scholarship Fund and Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis.
