Players of the Week from Eastern Hancock, Austin & Marquette!

One player who averaged 32.0 points and tied a school record for steals, another player who averaged 31.5 points and surpassed 1,000 career points and a third player who averaged just shy of a double-double have been selected as Week 1 winners in the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week program for 2024-25.

Sophomore Kenzie Koch of Eastern Hancock, junior Brynn Owens of Austin and junior Laniah Davis of Marquette Catholic have been cited for outstanding performances during the week of Nov. 4-9 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Also, Center Grove, which defeated a pair of ranked teams during the week, is the first IBCA/Ballogy Team of the Week in a new portion of the IBCA recognition program for 2024-25.

Players of the Week are cited by IHSAA District – Davis for District 1, Koch for District 2 and Owens for District 3. A single Team of the Week is cited for the entire state in the new part of the recognition program. Players and teams are recognized based on all performances in a Monday through Saturday week.

Koch, a 5-9 guard, is honored after averaging 32.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 6.3 steals in a 3-0 week for Eastern Hancock. She opened with 30 points, one rebound, four assists and tied a single-game school record with 13 steals in a 76-3 victory over Wes-Del. Koch followed with 34 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two steals in a 64-40 decision over Morristown. She completed her week with a 32 points, eight rebounds, two assists and four steals as the Royals defeated Rushville 47-33. For the week, Koch was 38-of-65 on field goals, 7-of-24 on 3-pointers and 13-of-16 on free throws.

Owens, a 5-7 guard, posted norms of 31.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals in propelling Austin to a 2-0 week. She tallied 30 points with seven rebounds, four assists and one steal as the Eagles topped Clarksville 62-16. She then provided 33 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals while moving her career scoring total to 1,006 points in a 65-31 victory over South Ripley. For the week, Owens converted 21-of-41 shots, 10-of-19 3-pointers and 11-of-13 free throws.

Davis, also a 5-7 guard, averaged 18.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.3 steals as Class A Marquette Catholic went 1-2 against three Class 4A opponents. Davis scored 20 points with seven rebounds, two assists and three steals in a 66-26 victory over South Bend Adams. She followed with 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists and four steals in a 42-31 setback to Lake Central. Davis then netted 22 points with 13 rebounds and two assists as the Blazers dropped a 58-53 overtime decision to McCutcheon. Davis hit 24-of-63 field goals, 2-of-11 3-pointers and 6-of-9 free throws during the week.

Center Grove (2-0), No. 5 in the IBCA preseason poll, was named IBCA/Ballogy Team of the Week after it defeated then-No. 7 Franklin Central 44-39 and then-No. 8 Fishers in a pair of road contests. Balance was key in against the Flashes as junior Gracyn Gilliard scored 13 points, senior Lilly Bischoff tallied 12 points (with three assists), senior Emerson Vlcan netted nine points (with seven rebounds) and senior Ava Grant had seven points. Against Fishers, Grant sank four 3-pointers en route to 16 points and Gilliard added 15 points for eighth-year Trojans’ coach Kevin Stuckmeyer.

This is the 17th season for the IBCA Player of the Week program and the fifth season the awards are being presented by Franciscan Health Sports Medicine, an IBCA corporate partner. This is the first season for the IBCA Team of the Week program. The Team of the Week program is presented by Ballogy, another IBCA corporate partner.

Winners are chosen each week in the Player of the Week program from each of the IHSAA's three districts, and one Team of the Week is selected from the entire state. The IBCA will begin boys’ Player and Team of the Week honors on Dec. 3. Former Brownsburg girls’ coach Debbie Smiley oversees the selection of girls’ honorees. Former Martinsville boys’ coach Kip Staggs will oversee the selection of boys’ honorees.

Coaches may nominate players and teams via buttons on the IBCA website (in.nhsbca.org). Coaches must be a current-year member for their players and/or team to be selected for a weekly award.

Girls' winners are chosen from now through Monday following the IHSAA girls' State Finals. Boys' winners are chosen from Dec. 2 through the Monday following the IHSAA boys' State Finals.

Way OT: Pioneer era Corduroy Road discovered at Edinburgh damn site

For those familiar with the old damn in Edinburgh (or just those that are students of history) 1830’s era Corduroy road uncovered. Very cool!

Yes, I am a certified history nerd.

I know this is a basketball space above all else, but always a bit for all things Indiana.

OT: Adam Howard fired at IU (The In-State recruiting guy)

Weird timing for sure. I know he is probably considered a mid-level assistant at best, but he was named a recruiting coordinator, and I only mention this because he was really the only true Indiana connection to our preps.

Always a slow churn of drama now in Bloomington. For those of us that like to see actual Hoosiers on the roster, this might be a step back.

Updated list of 1000 Point Scorers for Boys and Girls!

The IBCA boys' list has players listed as far back as Roy Burris, a 1921 graduate of Washington with 1,124 points, and Don Shelton, a 1921 Crawfordsville graduate with 1,005 points. Shelton compiled his total in three seasons, ending in 1920.

Other early members of the boys' 1,000-Point Club include Fuzzy Vandivier (Franklin Community 1922) with 1,597 points; Lloyd Wampler (Vincennes Lincoln 1922) with 1,205 points; Clement Crowe (Lafayette Jeff 1922) with 1,048 points; Bennie Devol (Lebanon 1923) with 1,167 points; Wilbur Cummins (Frankfort 1925) with 1,140 points; Karl "Knobby" Dickerson (Crawfordsville 1925) with 1,020 points; Vic Gibbens (Clay City 1926) with 1,500 points; Matt Joris (Muncie Central 1927) with 1,077 points; Elton Christensen (San Pierre 1927) with 1,031 points; and Lloyd Williams (Goshen 1929) with 1,174 points.

The girls' list contains three 1976 graduates as the inaugural members -- Rochelle "Shelly" Newell of Rochester (1,250 points), Judi Warren of Warsaw (1,232 points) and Pam Jones of Scottsburg (1,095 points). Other early members of the girls' list include seven 1977 graduates -- Jennifer Voreis of North Judson (1,247 points), Teri Rosinski of Norwell (1,210 points), Dru Cox of Plainfield (1,175 points), Sharon Schreyer of Lewis Cass (1,163 points), Cindy Piet of Scottsburg (1,135 points), Melinda Miles of Bloomfield (1,045 points), Rhonda Martin of Southwood (1,028 points) and Janice McCracken of Vincennes Lincoln (1,012 points).

The total boys' list currently contains 3,982 players. The current girls' list contains 2,339 players.

Players listed in black type have completed their high school careers. Players listed in red type are players who are active in the 2024-25 season and will add to their totals. There are a number of active players (shaded in green at the bottom of the girls' list; shaded in yellow at the bottom of the boys' list) with fewer than 1,000 points. These players -- and others, as that portion is not a comprehensive list -- enter the 2024-25 season with a chance to reach 1,000 points.

If a player played at more than one high school, the first school listed is the last school at which the player played. On the boys' list, for players from schools that no longer exist, a school name in parenthesis generally is the current school into which the closed school was consolidated. An example of this is: "Marion Pierce, Lewisville (Tri)."

The IBCA began compiling a boys' list of 1,000-point scorers at the end of the 1979-80 season. Junior Mannies started an Indiana high school record book at that time, and his initial list of 1,000-point scorers included 357 players. Mannies compiled the list for two more years until passing away in 1983. Gene Milner took over the compilation of the boys' 1,000-point scorers list in 1982-83. Milner, currently the IBCA's annual record book editor and website coordinator, has overseen the boys' 1,000-Point Club listing for the past 42 years.

The IBCA decided to compile a statewide girls' list of 1,000-point scorers in January 2022 when there was an inquiry for both boys' and girls' lists, and no such list was available for girls.

Hundreds of people have assisted in the compilation of both lists. Many thanks to all coaches, former coaches, athletic administrators, media members and various school, conference and county historians who have contributed to this effort.

IBCA officials realize that both lists are incomplete. Also, both lists have some players where an exact total for some players may need to be clarified. Still, these are the best, most complete lists we have at this time. These lists will be updated as appropriate, if corrections from past seasons are found. The lists, of course, will be updated at least one time annually at the end of each season with the new players who reach the 1,000-point milestone in the given season.

If anyone has information that can help us correct, update or add information for anyone, please email information to Pat McKee at patmckee77@aol.com.

Would be great if they would play the first game of the season in the old Cannelton gym that sat above the fire station - The one with the columns. However, I'm not even sure if that one is still in service and capable of hosting a varsity game.

Kentucky high school basketball coach resigns after profane locker room video surfaces

[Lynn Camp High School’s boys basketball coach resigned Wednesday after a pair of videos surfaced showing him cursing at players more than two dozen times in about a minute and a half. The videos of now-former coach Tyler Wagner berating players inside a locker room have been viewed nearly a million times and shared nearly 3,000 times since they were posted on Facebook last Friday.]

Crazy-ass conference bracket.. See our future!

1. I hate this
2. I wish this would’ve been in place last year in the Missouri Valley for the Sycamores.

[College football realignment has become a cash grab. The Big Ten and the SEC don’t just want all of the football money, they want basketball money too, which is why they’re pushing to expand the NCAA Tournament. The logic is simple. The more teams from your league that make the Big Dance, the more money they make.

The financial equation is different for small conferences. For leagues like the Sun Belt Conference, they will only get one automatic qualifier, barring something extraordinary. To maximize the money they make in the NCAA Tournament, they need their best team in the field to potentially pull off a March Madness upset.]

North Judson great Debbie Bolen remembered in Record Book Numbers

NORTH JUDSON, Ind. -- In 1988 North Judson great Debbie Bolen was passed over for Miss Basketball in favor of Brebeuf's Viki Hall, but her terrific numbers are not forgotten. Bolin would go on to even greater things at the college level. A short stay at Purdue didn't work out, as she left the team and classes in early fall her freshman year, but after sitting out a year, she competed at Valpo and went on to own nearly every record in their program.

OT: Caitlin Clark offered 10X her WNBA Contract

33ac91b0-84d6-11ef-b596-97d8de08967f

[There are six roster spots left in the Unrivaled basketball league — will Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark join her fellow WNBA players? The 2024 rookie of the year is reportedly being courted with a rich offer.

According to Sports Business Journal, Clark and Unrivaled have held talks about her participating in the 3-on-3 league that is set to tip off in January in Miami. The offer to Clark is believed to be worth over $1 million, which would include an equity stake.

By comparison, Clark signed a four-year, $338,056 contract after being drafted by the Fever. She made $76,535 during the 2024 season and could earn up to $97,582 in annual salary in the final year of her deal. There is also her endorsement contract with Nike, which is reportedly $28 million over eight years.]

I have read multiple accounts of Shawn Kemp pulling down 1300+ rebounds during his time at Concord (1985-88,) but I have never been able to track down an exact total. Has anyone ever run across this? Still hunting..

Hoosier Hysteria Lore: Jeff's Dirty Ed 17 TOs!

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- Arguably the most heated rivalry in all of Hoosierland comes by it honestly. There's enough venom among old foes New Albany and Jeffersonville that historians will swear vinegar, not river water, spans the stretch of the Ohio between the two historic river towns. ...And incidents like this 17 timeout game in 1948 helped build such genuine emotion between the two heavyweights...

brjd7fxhmbcefds7yf02

Memorabilia displayed in Jeffersonville's Nachand Fieldhouse, host of 1948 Sectional

First year head coach Ed Denton had guided the Red Devils to a lackluster 8-8 regular season record. Red Devil boosters, just as today, held much high expectations for their fighting five, and pressure within the community was nearing a boiling point.

New Albany on the other hand was enjoying high times that season. Second year mentor Gordon Raney had the Bulldogs barking at 15-3 and drawing much statewide attention as they entered the sectional as heavy favorites. - A fact that further ignited emotions among the Jeffersonville faithful. As a matter of record, NA took their regular season meeting with Jeff, 41-31, and the Bulldogs had actually climbed all the way to #2 in the state rankings earlier in the season.

The first round of Sectional went somewhat as expected for the 16 team field:

Jeffersonville 107, New Middletown 23

Laconia 45, Mauckport 24

Scribner 38, Borden 33

Henryville 58, New Amsterdam 26

New Albany 62, Georgetown 16

Corydon 50, Charlestown 36

Silver Creek 69, Elizabeth 29

Lanesville 63, Taylor 35

dkspn18qmgnqejhbfxm4

Photo of Jeffersonville vs. New Albany Sectional title game tip

The second round played out as well with much fanfare, but few upsets.

Jeffersonville 73, Laconia 39

Henryville 43, Scribner 41

New Albany 57, Corydon 28

Silver Creek 68, Lanesville 41

This is where it gets interesting.

In those days the final four was all played on a Saturday. Jeff was to play Henryville in the morning game, and New Albany was pitted against Silver Creek upon the completion of the first contest. The winners then would meet that evening for the title.

Now enter the third player in our story: The Henryville Hornets.

The Hornets were enjoying a fine season of their own, tallying a 16-4 regular season record. However, the majority of their docket of games had been played against smaller conference schools, and when the reality hit the hardwood, the Hornets were far out-manned by the Red Devils. It was apparent early on as Jeff established a commanding lead that would never be in doubt.

emxbyuejmwbqsvbecjdz

To tell the full tale of such a story, the reader must have a bit of background. Jeff and New Albany began their wrestling match over Sectional in 1925 when NA first hosted. The Bulldogs, having bragging rights to the larger gym at the time, hosted the majority of early sectionals - the exceptions going to Jeff in 1926 and 1933.

Jeff than took over hosting honors for many, many years, with one or two exceptions.

This particular season, 1948, Jeff was hosting, but that's about all they had going for the

It was at this point that Jeff's Coach Denton began what was to earn him a spot in Hoosier hysteria folklore...and where he acquired the nickname Dirty Ed.

With the Bulldogs and Dragons waiting in the hallway for their chance on the court, and with a seemingly insurmountable lead in the waning moments of the game, Coach Denton called timeout.

Then he called another. And another. In a matter of moments his allotted timeouts were used.

Then he called one more which resulted in a technical foul. The practice then proceeded - timeout followed by technical foul. The only real break in the rhythm was the snail's pace at which the entire Jeff squad would make it's way to the huddle and then to the floor.

The crowd, officials, and New Albany coaching staff quickly sized up the situation.

Coach Denton was purposely trying to delay the start of the second game so as to limit the time the Bulldogs would have to rest before playing Jeff for the title later that evening.

Game accounts report debris of every shape and size having to be repeatedly removed from the playing floor as the process repeated itself - 17 times.

When the dust and popcorn boxes had been cleared Jeffersonville was in the championship game with a 53-41 win over Henryville. Their lead shrunk but still never in question. Reports indicate that Hornet charity tosses were pretty accurate for that era, but that Henryville couldn't convert their offensive possessions during the bizarre stretch of the contest.

A flustered New Albany had their hands full with an unfazed Silver Creek squad in the second game, but netted a 51-40 win to set up the much anticipated match-up between the two bitter rivals.

As the story goes, Jeff Coach Denton had ordered his charges directly to beds for a restful nap following their morning-turned afternoon game.

The strategy worked as much as New Albany was left with but enough time to shower, eat and collect themselves prior to the championship that night.

The Sectional title game proved a bit anti-climactic, however. A New Albany team, who on this particular year was arguably already a better basketball team, now had their flames of hatred fanned by the shady actions earlier in the day. The Bulldogs made short work of the Devils, taking the championship 53-31.

New Albany Co-captains Orval Stone and Jo Jo Dean celebrate with Coach Gordon Ramey

New Albany proved their worth by taking the Jeffersonville Regional title the following weekend by besting #1 ranked Bedford 58-44 and Seymour 39-29.

The Bulldogs had their season ended when they were martyred the following week at the Semi-finals. The Wildcats of Jasper topped them in the afternoon game 53-50.

However, it was that Sectional marathon and all the trappings that went along with it that are most remembered from that postseason. Just one more brick in a rivalry that towers to this day, and another true chapter in that wonderful folklore of Hoosier hysteria.

235 boys Coaching Changes leading up to the 1947-48

In doing some research for another story, I ran across a stat that seldom appears in most mid-century reporting - That of coaching changes.

The article I ran across indicated there were 235 new basketball coaches in Indiana for the 1947-48 season. I am assuming these were only boys as girls teams had pretty much been phased out at this point in Indiana history. Additionally this number is probably inflated as more than a few coaches were re-entering the profession following service in World War II.

Largest Lead before Opponent Scores and Consecutive Losses additions -

It occurred to me that many times I go down a rabbit hole of research and, unless it's a major addition, I simply update the Record Book, and I doubt anyone even notices. So with that in mind I hope to do a better job of at least mentioning additions or corrections here. Here are a couple that I verified and added this past weekend.
