Floyd Central boys - Departing Coach Greg Walters FLOYDS KNOBS, Ind. -- (Updated 3/9) Now official that the Highlanders’ job is open. Coach Walters will not be returning after one season (7-16.) Coach Walters served as assistant at FC for five seasons before taking over for Todd Sturgeon. Walters inherited a team that had graduated six seniors, and this year’s version of the Highlanders showed that at times. They were largely competitive, but came up short in several close games. Incoming coach will have a bit more experience returning but lose two key contributors - Starting without the services of graduating 6-5 forward Caleb Washington who flat out did some damage last season for the Highlanders. They will also be without Tevi Ali in the backcourt. Three pretty consistent starters are expected back, but without big numbers. 6-5 jr-2-b Brock Conrad and fellow 6-1 sr-2-b backcourters Tre Walters and Austin Caldwell expected to return. Multiple job openings expected, but this early in the spring they are pretty limited. Good Varsity Clubber reports that Superintendent opening as well as New Albany coaching opening may impact hiring timeline. Also worth noting is the underscored fact that New Albany and Floyd share the same school corp, and reportedly everything (down to minute details) are expected to be equal in terms of sports programs. Obviously not a deal breaker, but something prospective coaches need to be aware of. HS Spanish, MS Social Studies, more coming. (Updated 4/17) AJ Moye now confirmed as name in the mix for Highlanders (Updated 4/24) Hold the phone on that. Good Varsity Club member now reports AJ Moye not going to Floyd Central. He was hired to be recruiting coordinator at Valparaiso University. (Updated 5/5) Good Varsity Club member now reports potential name in Fonso White
Peru boys - Departing Coach Eric Thompson PERU, Ind. -- (Updated 5/4) As Coach Thompson departs to take over the Huntington North program, the Peru Tigers will be looking at finding a new leader for the first time in sixteen years. Coach won over 200 games during his tenure there, including last season’s 17-8 Sectional title campaign. Varsity Clubber emails that the Tigers are loaded for next season too. Last year coach utilized a pretty short bench, and six players regularly saw varsity court time. Of those, only one senior departs, and while he was a key component to last year’s squad, his 8-9ppg were just a piece of the pie. Fifty points of offense expected to return consisting of several multi-year varsity letter winners. Report states that Peru will likely dot most preseason ranking and polls as one of the teams to beat for 2023-24. Another report comes in with the title, “You don’t see these types of jobs open very often.” The one piece that is probably missing is overall team height. The Tigers, while athletic, are not among the biggest 3A rosters - one 6-3 is about it. Still another Varsity Club member adds this was one of his favorite teams to watch last season simply due to the way they play. No doubt much of that credit goes to departing coach, but it also speaks to a roster that was willing to buy-in, and that deserves mention here. Full disclosure - while the immediate future may be bright for the Bengal Tigers, Varsity Clubber familiar with the program reports the feeder teams are abysmal. JV won only 2 games last year. 8th went 6-14, and 7th just 1-21. Current openings include: HS Ag, HS Sped, HS Science, HS PE/Careers, Eled. Some internal interest expected. One name mentioned as a possible, Drew Mosson.
Logansport, of the NCC, applied to be a member of the Hoosier Conference, joining 9 schools Hamilton Heights, Northwestern, Tipton, Western, Benton Central, LCC, Rensselaer, Twin Lakes and West Lafayette
The proposal, which will now be taken up at the June 22, 2023 Executive Committee meeting, was submitted by Commissioner Paul Neidig on behalf of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (IIAAA).
It calls for the following breaks:
Class 4A: 1400 enrollment and up
Class 3A: 600-1399 enrollment
Class 2A: 325-599 enrollment
Class 1A: 324 enrollment and down
Delphi girls - Departing Coach Tod Winlan DELPHI, Ind. -- (Updated 5/2) Coach Winlan went 10-14 during his one season with Delphi. Coach now begins work at his tenth school. The 2A Oracles reportedly graduate just one senior and only about 5ppg. Varsity Club member report goes on to point to just one letter winner topping double digits last season in jr-2-b Jenna Roth (12ppg.) However, report insists that several are ready to take the next step to equal her offensive output. As with many young teams, turnovers were a true obstacle, and will again be an area for improvement. That being said, Varsity Clubber is confident that a .500 mark is very attainable in both regular season and conference play. No help expected from JV. Limited info on last season’s middle school teams. 7th not good. 6th very strong. MS Health, HS Sped, MS Social Studies, and Eled. More expected. $8000 stipend
Mississinewa boys - Departing Coach James Reed GAS CITY, Ind. -- (Updated 5/2) Coach Reed will not be back for a 6th season in Gas City. Last year the Indians were 6-17, and struggled with just two seniors on the roster. Good Varsity Club member reports last year’s growing pains will likely help in-coming coach as neither senior from last year’s squad was a major contributor. Now less than eight underclassmen suffered through some on-the-job training last year. As the record indicates, none of them blew the doors off last year, but Varsity Clubber does point out6-1 soph-2-b Logan Barnes (12ppg) and 5-11 sr-2-b backcourt partner Preston McCann (11ppg) as reason for optimism. Not a ton of height in the mix, but 6-5 jr-2-b Jaxon Ott brings his middle linebacker sensibilities to the post. Given so many underclassmen were logging varsity time last go round, it’s a bit surprising that the JV was right near .500. Report continues that middle school squads were pretty decent last year as well - 8th 10-5, 7th 8-7. Report states Ole miss with current openings at Eled, HS Industrial Arts, HS Science, and MS Alternative. One report of potential internal interest but no name.
The 2023 NFL Draft gets underway Thursday, and over the ensuing few days, the hopes and dreams of more than 200 college football players will be realized. It's the type of stuff that movies are made of -- which inspired us to revisit some of the best sports films and TV shows over the years. If the writers and editors on our college football team could draft fictional coaches to lead our even more fictional teams (of any sport), who would we choose?
And so, the Fictional Coaches Draft was born.
Waldron boys - Departing Coach Beau Scott WALDRON, Ind. -- (Updated 5/1) Coach Scott has stepped down as the head basketball coach at Waldron.Mohawks will also be in the process of looking for an assistant principal/athletic director. Good Varsity Club member reports those hire(s) will take place first and will likely impact coaching timeline. Waldron comes off of back-to-back 12 win seasons and is expected to return six-eight players who saw varsity action last season, a JV Squad that was 13-7, and have an incoming freshman class that won the MHC regular season & tournament this season. Mohawks graduated four seniors, two of which were 1000 point scorers. Math position & English position open now at HS/MS with a possibility a few more openings. Admin expected to entertain both internal and external interest. One named mentioned - Tommy Coy Waldorn JV coach/SS teacher.
