IHSAA Boys Sectional Draw!

Sectional games are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 28, and run through Saturday, March 4 with regionals on Saturday, March 11. This year’s state tournament, like the girls tournament, has a different format than previous years as the regional round and semi-state round have essentially switched.

The regional is now a single-game championship, and the semi-state becomes a two-game affair with the winner advancing to the state championship game. The previous format of a two-round regional and a single semi-state game had been in place since 2002.

Historic Background on Westphalia High School Wildcats

A basketball friend asked me to look up some info on Westphalia High School - Now part of North Knox High. For those not from southern Indiana, Vincennes is the county seat there. He attended grade school there and was curious about its high school basketball history. I sent this to him, but thought I'd share it here, because why not. Nobody else cares about this sort of thing :)

++++

Westphalia’s last varsity team wore green and white and used the mascot Wildcats, but there were those that unofficially referred to them as the “Cheestowners” because the town had two cheese factories that shipped cheese to much of the midwest.

Westphalia High School competed in the Knox County Conference.

The Wildcats participated in only one IHSAA tourney - 1927

1927 Vincennes 14-team Sectional played at Adams Coliseum: Monroe City 42, Westphalia 12 (Called just Vincennes Coliseum at that time)

1928 was the last season Westphalia fielded a team.

Westphalia never had its own gym. Instead using the gym at Sandborn High School for home games. Practices took place on a cinder court behind the school, and additional practices were held on a dirt court located behind the Mobil Gas Station.

Westphalia maintained a school thru grade 8 for several years with kiddos matriculating to Edwardsport High School (Nicknamed the Powers which is pretty cool) until it ultimately consolidated into what is now North Knox. During the 1947-48 season, Westphalia grade school captured the prestigious Knox County basketball championship. 1959 was last year for any school in town.

A guy named Herb Pepmeier was recognized by the Vincennes Sun-Commercial paper in 1997 as the all-time greatest player (Career leading scorer) for Westphalia. No numbers were offered, but he was a junior during their one Sectional year and apparently played his senior year in 1928 when they did not enter the tourney.

Well, they actually fielded a team several years. Played a pretty full schedule of Knox County Conference teams apparently. However, they only chose to enter the IHSAA tourney once. That was not uncommon for very small schools during that decade.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Absolute mess at Angola but maybe with some Tunnel light

tvbbv5f4nkty6eb7ot45

Angola girls - Departing Coach Nick Burlingame
ANGOLA, Ind. -- (Updated 2/16) WANE15 is reporting Coach Burlingame has resigned after three seasons with Angola (45-27.) WANE had previously reported in November 2021 there was an investigation into the girls basketball program at Angola. Two assistant coaches resigned their positions at that time. Police are reportedly involved but details are few. Goes without saying this is a mess with countless and many varied theories. Here is a link to the latest - Assuming story will be updated: https://www.wane.com/news/local-news/head-coach-of-angola-girls-basketball-team-resigns/ All that being said, from the perspective of this column the focus is for the incoming coach, and beyond all the mess, the Hornets finished 11-11 last season. IF all return that are expected to, from a basketball standpoint, the Hornets will graduate just two seniors, and return six strong contributors including PG duties and post defense and rebounding. JV team described as pretty strong. Finished 15-6, 9-1 in Northeast Corner Conference. Won last seven games of the season. Looking further down the line, 8th grade said to be decent. 7th and 6th grades both pretty strong. Job openings currently few and far between but several more are expected later this spring. Currently just HS French, ESL, HS Spanish.

Rosters named for first IndyStar girls' All-Star 'Futures Game'

Two players each from Indian Creek, Lawrence Central and Zionsville plus one player from 18 other schools have been named to the rosters for the inaugural IndyStar girls' All-Star "Futures Game," games director Mike Broughton announced Thursday (Feb. 16).

The Futures Games, one each for boys and girls, are a new aspect of the Indiana All-Star basketball program. The Futures Games will pair teams of current Indiana freshmen, sophomores and juniors in a North-South format. The first Futures Games will be played Saturday, June 10 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The girls' game is set for noon, and the boys' game will follow about 2:00 p.m. The IndyStar Indiana All-Stars will host the Kentucky senior All-Stars later the same day in Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Juniors Lauren Foster and Faith Wiseman of Indian Creek, freshmen Lola Lampley and Aniyah McKenzie of Lawrence Central as well as junior Reagan Wilson and sophomore Meredith Tippner of Noblesville each has been selected to the South team for the inaugural girls' Futures Game.

Those six players will be joined by Zionsville junior Emma Haan, Mooresville junior Rachel Harshman, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) junior Ellery Minch, Southridge sophomore Avah Montgomery, Bedford North Lawrence junior Chloe Spreen and Jennings County junior Juliann Woodard to complete the South team.

The North team features one player from 12 schools. The North lineup includes Valparaiso freshman Lilliann Barnes, Columbia City sophomore Addison Baxter, Twin Lakes sophomore Addison Bowsman, Brownsburg sophomore Avery Gordon, Carroll (Flora) junior Alli Harness, Fishers junior Talia Harris, Hamilton Southeastern sophomore Maya Makalusky, Fort Wayne Snider junior Jordyn Poole, Hamilton Heights junior Camryn Runner, South Bend Washington sophomore Kira Reynolds, West Lafayette junior Adrianne Tolen and Crown Point junior Ava Ziolkowski.

Kristi Sigler of Jennings County is the head coach and Brian Smith of Loogootee is the assistant coach for the South team. Matt Stone of Wabash is the head coach and Lisa Finn of Indianapolis Cathedral is the assistant coach for the North team. Sigler is 94-74 in seven seasons at Jennings County. Smith is 119-76 in eight seasons at Loogootee. Stone is 123-90 in nine seasons at Wabash. Finn is 51-45 in four seasons at Cathedral.

Players and coaches for the All-Star Futures Games are picked by a Futures Games committee chaired by Broughton. Players who are juniors also are eligible for selection to the 2023 Indiana Junior All-Stars that will be selected later by an Indiana Basketball Coaches Association committee chaired by Brandon Bradley of Kankakee Valley.

The Indiana All-Stars program was founded in 1939 when the Indiana boys' All-Stars played the state champion Frankfort Hot Dogs. The All-Star series with Kentucky began in 1940, and the girls' portion of the All-Stars was added in 1976. The Junior All-Stars, boys and girls, were added in 1996.

The Indiana portion of the All-Star Games is organized and produced by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. The Indianapolis Star, with its IndyStar brand, is the title sponsor.

IBCA Players of the Week from: Michigan City, Attucks, Bloomfield, Central Noble, Hamilton Hts, and Indian Creek!

Briscoe, Hodges, & Vice Headline Week-15 of the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week Awards

The boys’ season is beginning to wind down, with conference championships being decided, and there were a number of explosive performances throughout the state, not limited to just the Week-15 winners. In girls’ action, 64 teams were cut in half, as the IHSAA turned to a new Regional format this year. All in all, six players were selected as Week-15 IBCA/Franciscan Health Players of the Week.

Michigan City Senior Jamie Hodges Jr., Crispus Attucks Sophomore Dezmon Briscoe, Bloomfield Freshman Blake Neill, Central Noble Senior Madison Vice, Hamilton Heights Junior Camryn Runner, and Indian Creek Junior Lauren Foster are being honored as winners for Feb. 6-Feb. 11 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Hodges is the boys’ recipient, and Vice is the girls’ recipient in District-1. Briscoe and Runner take home boy’s and girls’ honors, respectively, in District-2. Neill was a standout boy, while Foster was a standout girl, in District-3.

Michigan City Senior Jamie Hodges Jr. had as impressive of a week as there has been during the 2022-2023 season. The 5-9 guard helped the Wolves to a trio of wins last week, highlighted by a 50-point outburst in their tight, 75-74 win against Gary Bowman. In that game, Hodges was 16-25 from the field,

5-8 from deep, and 13-15 from the free throw line. He added five rebounds, a pair of assists, and three steals to his totals. Later in the week, he posted a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds in a 78-57 Duneland Athletic Conference win against Lake Central. He also handed out six assists and stole the ball four times in that contest. And in a matchup with Calumet, the Senior guard scored another 33 points on 15-20 shooting, while dishing out five more assists, and picking up six more thefts in a runaway win.

Senior Madison Vice is definitely leaving her mark on the Central Noble program, and now she has them just two wins away from a trip to Indianapolis. In their Regional matchup Saturday against South Central (Union Mills), a 64-52 win for the Lady Cougars, Vice posted a double-double with 33 points and 14 rebounds. She was an efficient 9-13 from the field, and an impressive 15-19 from the charity stripe. The 5-6 guard also chipped in six assists and four steals. She is headed to play at Siena Heights University next season.

Crispus Attucks Sophomore Dezmon Briscoe is making noise early in his career, and the 6-7 forward had a pair of dominant performances last week. First, in a comfortable Greater Indianapolis Conference win at Riverside, Briscoe scored 30 points and grabbed 11 caroms to post his first double-double of the week. Then, in another conference win, this time an 81-54 outcome against Tindley, the Sophomore forward again went for 30 points but pulled down a massive 20 rebounds. He was a solid

11-16 from the field and 3-6 from deep in this game, and he blocked nine total shots throughout the week.

Junior Camryn Runner has the Lady Huskies of Hamilton Heights back in the Semi-State for the first time since 2012-2013, following a hard-fought 44-40 triumph over a strong Norwell Lady Knights program. The 5-9 guard was highly accurate, making 6-8 shots from the field, 3-3 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line, scoring 25 of their 44 points. She also snagged six rebounds and managed to block a pair of shots in the big victory.

For the second consecutive week, we travel to Bloomfield for the boys’ District-3 winner, as Cardinal Freshman Blake Neill was absolutely on fire in their lone contest of the week. In a 73-45 win against a good Washington Hatchet squad, the 6-1 guard poured in 36 points on 12-18 shooting. More impressively, 11-17 of those shots were let go from beyond the 3-point line, and he scored a blistering 19 points in the first quarter alone. The rookie made his only 2-point attempt, his only free throw attempt, and grabbed three rebounds as well in this standout performance.

The Indian Creek Lady Braves are loaded and deep, but Junior Lauren Foster has been putting up numbers all season. The 5-7 guard was up to the task once again Saturday, as she helped the Braves to a 63-31 Regional win over Purdue Polytechnic. Foster buried 10-17 shots from the floor, including 2-4 3-pointers, scoring 22 points in the matchup. She also grabbed seven rebounds, delivered eight assists, and picked up a trio of steals, as Indian Creek won its first girls’ Regional title ever.

Mitchell girls - Departing Coach Tim Haworth
MITCHELL, Ind. -- (Updated 2/13) WBIW is reporting that veteran Coach Tim Haworth has announced he is retiring from both teaching and coaching at the end of the school year. His remarkable 40-year teaching/coaching career is documented in this link. https://www.wbiw.com/2023/02/10/lad...-announces-retirement-from-coaching-teaching/ As far as what incoming coach will likely have on tap, the most recent Bluejackets finished 5-18. 6-0 sr-2-b Julian Bond leads a set of post players with plenty of height set to return, but most of the scoring graduates this spring. Underclass PG also on books to return, but will have to take on a much greater role. JV reported as decent. Name to board 3/13.

I will flesh this opening out more, but agood Varsity Club member reports there is already a MS coach with an inside track on this.

The Panthers finished third in the SIAC at 52.7 points per game, the highest average for the program since 2010. Several Teaching positions expected but not known yet given the calendar. EVSC is offering something called an early offer contract tho. Some internal interest expected.

HH Varsity Club Insider: New Albany boys

o8tnl6fdnxajrh6chevk

New Albany boys – Departing Coach Jim Shannon
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – (Updated 2/10)
Veteran Coach Jim Shannon announced at the beginning of this past season that this would be his last. Nearly 40 years and over 600 wins (25 years at NA) are a hall of fame legacy for sure. Maybe more importantly to NA faithful, he is 21-12 vs hated Jeffersonville. This year’s Bulldogs, while competitive, have floated around the .500 mark most of the season. One thing that marks this year’s roster as a bit different from typical New Albany teams is that it is not necessarily top heavy with senior leadership. That may bode well for incoming coach. Plus good Varsity Club member reports JV squad is pretty solid. NA has one of the larger coaching staffs around, and plenty of rumors swirling about internal interest. Still others expect external candidates to be in the mix.

Lanesville boys – Departing Coach Mikel Miller
LANESVILLE, Ind. – (Updated 2/10)
It was announced in January that longtime Coach Mikel Miller would be resigning at the end of the season following allegations of player misconduct this past year.
https://www.wdrb.com/news/education...cle_be98a33c-914d-11ed-b6ed-2fed6796ebeb.html Good Varsity Club members report it’s as much of a mess as you imagine. Several offer that it is such a shame that a respected veteran coach was saddled with a bunch of idiots. That aside, the new coach will likely get a fresh start, but will have little in terms of groceries to make the dinner. Varsity Clubber reports four very limited seniors graduate. New coach will likely inherit 3 underclassmen with some varsity time. As one would expect from a winless varsity squad, the JV is no peach either. Looking down the line this year’s 7th grade squad did capture the County championship. As is the case with nearly all February openings, teaching positions still unknown. One odd one confirmed is HS Media Specialist.

Eastern Hancock Sectional Blasting of Irvington Prep posts Record Book Marks!

Sectional Semifinals. Final score was 97-13. Interestingly the note that brought it to my attention contained an arguemnt for sectional games to be seeded. Not sure how that would've helped stop this. Might be argued that seeding would actually create more outcomes of this nature.

IBCA Players of the Week from Chesterton, Greenfield, Bloomfield, South Ripley, Valpo, Twin Lakes & Corydon

As girls’ Sectional play dominated hoops talk throughout the state last week, a short, buzzer-beating shot stole the show, as the Bloomfield Cardinals won a double overtime thriller against North Daviess in boys’ action, 49-47. In total, Week-14 of the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week Awards Program saw seven more Hoosier prep players earn honors, including three ladies who led their teams to Sectional titles, each for the first time in 10 or more years for their schools.

Chesterton Junior Justin Sims, Greenfield-Central Senior Dylan Moles, Bloomfield Senior Peter Combs, South Ripley Sophomore Cole Henry, Valparaiso Freshman Lillian Barnes, Twin Lakes Sophomore Addison Bowsman, and Corydon Central Senior Ava Weber have been selected as winners for Jan. 30-Feb. 4 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Sims and Barnes are the boys’ and girls’ winners, respectively, in District-1. Moles is the boys’ recipient, and Bowsman is the girls’ recipient, for District-2. Combs and Henry share boys’ honors, while Weber is the lone girls’ honoree in District-3.

Following a State Finals appearance a year ago, the Chesterton Trojans are out to a 14-4 record, including a winning streak they extended to nine games last week. Junior Justin Sims has had a major impact on their play, and the 6-6 forward was strong in two performances a week ago. First, in a 59-57 Duneland Athletic Conference win at Michigan City, Sims posted a 24-point, 12-rebound performance, achieving his first double-double of the week. He was a strong 12-14 from the free throw stripe, plus five of his rebounds came at the offensive end, and he blocked three shots. Later in the week, the Trojans went into Warsaw and pulled out a hard-fought, 71-56 win. This time, the Junior forward was a highly efficient 11-14 from the field and 7-9 from the line, scoring 29 points, a career high. He posted another double-double with 10 rebounds, and he erased two more shots with blocks.

Freshman Lillian Barnes has been a highlight show all season for the Valparaiso Lady Vikings, and she came to play last week, helping the green and white to their first Sectional title since 2005. It was their 21st crown, but it didn’t come without some tough wins. The 23-2 Vikings began their week with a close 40-34 triumph against Crown Point. In that game, Barnes scored 16 points, she was 2-2 from deep and 2-2 from the free throw line, plus she posted a double-double with 10 rebounds. She added two assists and three steals in the victory. In the Sectional Semifinal, the 5-11 wing scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, posting yet another double-double, as Valparaiso knocked off Chesterton, 60-46. The Viking rookie also passed out six assists, picked up seven steals, and blocked a pair of shots in the effort. In the finale, Valparaiso took care of Portage by a 47-33 margin, though it was much closer than that for about three quarters. Barnes was again stellar, knocking down 8-13 shots from the floor, she was a perfect 8-8 from the line, as she scored 24 points in total. She posted her third double-double of the week with her 12 rebounds, plus she stole the ball three more times.

The 17-1 Greenfield-Central Cougars are off to a great start, and last week they extended their winning streak to 14 games with a pair of victories. Senior Dylan Moles helped in a big way with two strong outings himself. In a 56-43 Hoosier Heritage Conference win over the Delta Eagles, Moles scored 24 points on 11-17 shooting, including 2-4 from deep. He also grabbed three rebounds and handed out seven assists in the game. Two days later, the 6-2 guard helped the Cougars to a 55-39 win against Greenwood. In this contest, Moles scored 20 points, he was a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe, plus he added five rebounds, five assists, and three thefts to his stat line.

From the day she stepped foot on campus, Sophomore Addison Bowsman has had the ball in her hands and helped Twin Lakes to 45 wins so far, including a perfect 26-0 record to this point in 2022-2023. Last week, the Lady Indians won their 17th Sectional title, but just their first since 2007. They began their week with a comfortable win over North Montgomery, in which Bowsman scored 21 points, grabbed three caroms, and dished out 10 assists to post a double-double. She was 6-8 from the floor, 3-4 from long range, and she collected five steals as well. In the Sectional Semifinal, a nail-biting 68-61 double overtime win against West Lafayette, the 5-6 point guard was productive again, scoring 25 points, pulling down seven rebounds, assisting on seven more baskets, and picking up three steals. Then in the Sectional Championship, the Sophomore guard went for another 20 points, collected four rebounds, and handed out seven additional assists. She set the single-season Lady Indian record for assists with 186.

Bloomfield Senior Peter Combs and South Ripley Sophomore Cole Henry shared District-3 boys’ honors this week for their equally strong play in huge overtime wins for their teams. Combs helped the Cardinals to a Southwestern Indiana Conference win over North Daviess by knocking down a buzzer-beating jumper from about 10-feet to seal the 49-47 double overtime win. The 6-8 Senior finished with 28 points, eight rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots, plus he was an efficient 10-15 from the field. Cole Henry was instrumental in South Ripley’s 80-72 overtime win against Ohio River Valley Conference opponent, Southwestern (Hanover). In this triumph, the 6-6 forward scored 33 points on 9-16 shooting, he was 3-6 from 3-point range, and he knocked down 12-14 charity tosses. The Sophomore posted a double-double with his 11 rebounds, and he protected the paint with his eight blocked shots.

Senior Ava Weber has helped Corydon Central to a 24-2 record this season, and the Panthers are still rolling, having won their first Sectional title since 2013, their 18th overall. In an impressive 58-39 win against a good Charlestown team, Weber scored 30 points on 10-16 shooting, she was a near-perfect 10-11 from the free throw line, plus she contributed nine rebounds and three steals to the effort. In the Sectional Semifinal, a 53-39 win against North Harrison, the 5-11 forward scored a modest 21 points on 8-12 shooting, plus she chipped in a pair of assists and five steals. But Weber saved her best for the Championship game, as she scored 34 points in the 63-54 success against a strong Scottsburg squad. The Senior forward snagged nine rebounds, five of which were offensive, and she added a pair of assists and five steals.
