HH Varsity Club Insider: Madison boys opens

ejpbu3eznh8xhda4bqmj

Madison boys - Departing Coach Adam Stotts
MADISON, Ind. -- (Updated 3/14) Coach Stotts has announced his resignation via Facebook after three seasons. Last year the Cubs finished 7-17, bowing out to Silver Creek in the 3A Sectional opener. Varsity Club report indicates four seniors depart, but some firepower is expected back. 5-11 sr-2-b guard Quinvy Roberts is expected back along with his team leading 15PPG and 5RPG. Fellow classmate Mason Davis (10PPG) is also expected to return to the backcourt. 6-1 forward Landon True (9PPG) is another in the sr-2-b class that’s sure to figure. Soph-2-b Gabe Fife also showed flashes as a varsity frosh. Not much in terms of proven height though, and post defense will be tough given the Cubs’ schedule. Teaching jobs are lean: Eled, HS Biology, HS Family Consumer Science is it right now.

HH Varsity CLub Insider: Heavy Front Runner reported at Hagerstown

usvfkvcmj02sdrgk4ao3

Hagerstown girls - Departing Coach Chris Oliger
HAGERSTOWN, Ind. -- (Updated 3/14) Lifetime Coach Oliger has led the Tigers for over twenty seasons and wracked up 270 wins in the process. Times have been tough recently though as Hagerstown had zero wins last season and finished the season with only seven healthy players in the program. No JV team the last two years. Varsity Clubber reports good numbers in the middle school classes. Can't close this one just yet, but good Varsity Club member reports heavy front runner: Brad Catey will be new head coach at Hagerstown. Been an assistant there for several years.

HH Varsity Club Insider: North Central boys return nearly 50PPG

xwvo1uexjnryilul0d70

North Central boys - Departing Coach John Ladson
FARMERSBURG, Ind. -- (Updated 3/13)
The Thunderbirds are coming off a competitive season that saw them finish 11-13. However, good Varsity Club member reports a great deal of optimism in Farmersburg. Only two seniors graduate, and nearly 50PPG are on paper to return. A pair of srs-2-b will likely anchor next year’s effort: 6-2 guard/forward Ethan Willis (16PPG, 9RPG) and Trashaun Cockrell (11PPG, 5APG.) Several other sr-2-b classmates fill important roles and were all good for about 6 an outing last year. Varsity Club member reports a couple of challenges for new coach. One being lassoing an incoming senior class of 8-9, and getting them to fly in the right direction. The second being their conference has been tough as nails. North Central is a member of the Southwestern Indiana Conference: North Daviess, Linton, Clay City, Shakamak, Eastern Greene, Bloomfield, and WRV. Still waiting to hear about feeder teams. Farmersburg job openings include HS/MS Math, HS/MS PE & Health, and Eled Sped.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Heavy Front Runner in place at Zionsville

gw4y3h8plzpgqzaxdn2x

Zionsville girls - Departing Coach Andy Maguire
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- (Updated 3/13) Coach Maguire resigns after an incredibly successful double stint at Zionsville. He oversaw a complete evolution in the program that now sees them as a regular in the state rankings. Good Varsity Club member reports a ton leaves due to graduation this spring, but there is optimism around a strong soph-2-b class led by 5-6 guard McKenzie Chapman. Post defense and rebounding were largely handled by committee last season, but much of that effort were impactful seniors. 5-11 Sr-2-b frontliner Caroline Sampson is the only proven frontliner back. Nice size in the underclasses though. Varsity Club member indicates reaching last year’s win total of 16 might be tough going given the Eagles’ schedule, but this is a program that should be competitive year-in and year-out. Two reports of Zionsville teacher and assistant coach Bronson Lickliter as likely replacement.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Political Firestorm at Floyds Knobs

yyknfd5hz6bx56vmcck5

Floyd Central girls - Departing Coach Randy Gianfagna
FLOYDS KNOBS, Ind. -- (Updated 3/13)
Now official that Coach Gianfagna will not be returning to the Highlanders after six seasons with the Hoosier Hills Conference school. Several reports of red flags here. While the consensus opinion reports a very strong basketball squad expected to return, many also point to a political firestorm. One report even points to an alleged player walk-out (or at least the threat of one) deep into the season. Coach Gianfagna is well respected within the coaching ranks as a professional, and his departure has raised eyebrows within the Indiana basketball community. What awaits an incoming coach in Floyds Knobs? That’s a great question, and it makes what would normally be a very attractive position one that rightfully will draw pause before applying. Varsity Club member reports seem to agree this roster is ready to take the next step. Question is will they allow a coach to take them there. No shortage of teaching openings expected at numerous levels.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Bosse building from the Basement

noat8btiarpwqmnhmww8

Bosse girls - Departing Coach Garland Copeland
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- (Updated 3/11) It’s been ten long years since the 3A Bulldogs posted a winning record, and the last five have been as bad as it gets. Only six wins spread across the last five seasons and more blowouts than any set of jerseys should endure. Pocket City Varsity Club member reports only one senior dotted the roster, and she only contributed a handful of points each outing. Trouble is, nobody else did either. JV is just as hapless of varsity. Report continues that at this point, there is no one in the program that could be counted on for 5 points vs. a conference opponent. Last year’s two Bulldog wins came vs. 1A Washington Catholic and Cannelton. If there is a positive, zero expectations in the win column come with contract. However, it takes a special kind of person to deal with all the negativity that comes with the losses and all that Bosse job brings to the table. 100% rebuild without a feeder program, and a school as rough as it gets in Evansville. HS Building trades and HS Spanish is al in the building at this time. However, there are several middle and elementary openings within the EVSC. $7100 stipend.

2024 IndyStar Indiana Girls' All-Stars Announced!

Thirteen players have been selected for the 2024 IndyStar Indiana Girls' All-Stars, All-Stars game director Mike Broughton announced Monday (March 11).

Those chosen to the team will play three games in June -- one exhibition game against the Indiana Junior All-Stars as well as home-and-home contests against the Kentucky All-Stars.

The players comprising 2024 Indiana Girls' All-Stars, listed alphabetically, are Audrey Annee of Center Grove, Emma Haan of Zionsville, Alli Harness of Carroll (Flora), Talia Harris of Fishers, Ellery Minch of Mt. Vernon (Fortville), Jordyn Poole of Fort Wayne Snider, Camryn Runner of Hamilton Heights, Chloe Spreen of Bedford North Lawrence, Lauren Walsh of Penn, Reagan Wilson of Noblesville, Faith Wiseman of Indian Creek, Rachel Wirts of Center Grove and Juliann Woodard of Jennings County.

The 2024 IndyStar Indiana Miss Basketball will come from among the above players and be announced later.

The '24 girls' All-Stars have two players who have been a part of state championship teams (Spreen, 2023 4A, and Wilson, 2022 4A), two players who were named IBCA first-team Academic All-State (Minch and Runner) and three players who were named IBCA honorable mention Academic All-State (Annee, Haan and Wilson).

Andy Maguire of Zionsville has been named head coach of the 2024 All-Stars. He will be assisted by Jason Simpson of Greensburg and Lauren Votaw of Fishers. Maguire is 330-240 in 26 seasons as a varsity coach, including 256-209 in 21 years at Zionsville. Simpson is 180-65 in 10 seasons at Greensburg. Votaw is 131-44 in seven seasons at Fishers.

The Junior-Senior exhibition game is set for June 5 at Kokomo. The first game against Kentucky will be June 7 at a site to be announced. The final game against Kentucky will be June 8 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

All three dates will be doubleheaders with the IndyStar Indiana Boys' All-Stars, whose roster will be announced later. The roster for the Indiana girls' Junior All-Stars were announced March 4. The roster for the Indiana boys' Junior All-Stars will be announced later.

The Indiana Junior All-Stars will play two girl-boy doubleheaders this year -- June 2 against the Kentucky Junior All-Stars at Scottsburg and June 7 against the Indiana seniors at Kokomo.

The Indiana All-Stars program was founded in 1939 when the Indiana Boys All-Stars played the state champion Frankfort Hot Dogs. The series with Kentucky began in 1940, and the girls' portion of the All-Stars was added in 1976. The Junior All-Stars, boys and girls, were added in 1996. The All-Star senior girls have played Kentucky every year since 1976, except 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The All-Star senior boys have played Kentucky in all but three years since 1940 -- 1943 (World War II), 1944 (World War II) and 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic).

The Indiana Senior girls lead 53-41 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior girls lead 41-11 in games against the Indiana Junior girls. The Indiana Junior girls lead 11-1 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior boys lead 104-45 in their series with Kentucky. The Indiana Senior boys lead 41-11 in games against the Indiana Junior boys. The Indiana Junior boys lead 7-5 in their series with Kentucky.

The second IndyStar Indiana All-Star "Futures Games" doubleheader will be June 3 at Hamilton Southeastern. The Futures Games will be a girls-boys doubleheader with Indiana-only squads of sophomores and freshmen in a North vs. South format. The Futures Games' lineups will be announced later. In the inaugural Futures Games, the North girls prevailed 73-63 and the South boys won 100-96.

The Indiana portion of the All-Star Games is organized and produced by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. The Indianapolis Star, with its IndyStar brand, is a title sponsor. Hoosier Shooting Academy is a presenting partner of All-Star Week, and Energy Systems Group is a presented partner of the June 8 All-Star doubleheader at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The IndyStar Indiana All-Star Team is selected through a balloting process of coaches and media overseen by game organizers from the IBCA. The top vote getter will be named Miss Basketball, and the remainder of the team is finalized by Broughton after observing numerous games and events throughout the season, conferring with coaches, school officials and media across the state. Broughton also reviews votes submitted by coaches and media who each could recommend up to 10 players.

Those chosen as 2024 IndyStar Indiana Girls' All-Stars are listed below alphabetically. Jersey numbers will be assigned later.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Tech boys

trneznwesnwkaetsetqw

Tech boys - Departing Coach Ryan Mulcrone
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- (Updated 3/11) Coach Mulcrone stepped in for the last eight games (6-2) after IPS stated they were “exploring a personal matter with former coach Damon Turner. At the time the school district would only say Coach Turner had not been terminated. Coach Turner had previously been suspended for the entirety of the 2022 IHSAA tourney for violation of the past-link rule. Varsity Club member reports that Tech presently has a very good jr-2-b class that has already proven themselves at the varsity level, but goes on to state that what Tech had on its roster last year really means very little. “Given the state of matter in Marion county and especially IPS right now, one must have two hands and both feet in the AAU circuit to field a team that will compete. Tell your readers that unless they consider themselves a part (and a big part) of that world, don’t even apply.” Do I even bother to list teaching positions here? Nah. Interim Coach Mulcrone-Former assistant at Eureka College and current Tech SS teacher and Midwest Prospect Academy strong frontrunner to retain position.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Eastbrook boys job returns 40+ PPG

wo69uvr8bcixvl4rtge0

Eastbrook boys - Departing Coach Greg Allison
MARION, Ind. -- (Updated 3/11) Coach Allison will not be back for a seventh season with the Panthers. Eastbrook has had a rough go of it as they have not seen the topside of .500 in almost ten years, and have not sniffed a Sectional title since 1998. Things might be trending in the right direction for this 2A program though. Good Varsity Club member reports that although three seniors graduate this spring, only two of them were regulars, and they were only good for a couple of buckets a game. In fact over 40PPG are on paper to return including top two leading scorers and rebounders. An underclass backcourt is expected back, and Eastbrook faithful are excited about a strong soph-2-b class. Not a ton of height as a couple of 6-2’s do it for the frontline, but overall the season goals are shifting for this program with what’s in the pipe right now. No won/loss record was included in report, but there was an emphasis on the frosh-2-b group being very solid as well. HS Math only position in the district right now, but more likely. Also worth mentioning girls job also open. Good Varsity Club member reports admin would like to pair with HS Math, HS Science, HS Ag.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Roster Questions at Faith Christian Openings

uucglj9zf56y85xgb7sk

Faith Christian Girls - Departing Coach DJ Layton
LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- (Updated 3/5) Word today that longtime Coach DJ Layton will not be returning for an eighth season. Unconfirmed reports that top two players have decided to transfer. No names given, but if one of those happens to be Coach Layton’s daughter - 5-9 PG jr-2-b Maya Layton (25PPG, 5RPG, and 4APG) all bets are off. So incoming coach should just consider this a rebuild. Faith Christian has been a Sectional Tourney participant since 2013, but has yet to advance to Regionals. Although they did advance to the title game in 2023, the Eagles have been in the lowest of lows. A zero win season, a 1-20, and another 2-19 go round that saw Fatith get blown out bo 30-40+. However, the class that surrounds Coach Layton’s daughter has put those times behind them. Now, with coach’s departure, and most likely her daughter as well, how many of those will seek greener pastures as well? Considering tuition is $7900 a year (err, $1800 with what is now being called a “Choice Scholarship” - courtesy of Indiana State House,) incoming coach would seem to need what some would call a magnetic personality to have prospective student athletes choose the Eagles. Since there is presently no NIL money at the high school level yet, that could be a challenge. Good Varsity Club member reports the pretty standard two sets of private school athletes. One: Families that have attended since grade school Two: Trophy hunters. New coach will have to deal with both and the respective challenges that go with each. FC is in the Midwest Athletic Conference: West Central, Tri-County, Demotte Christian, Frontier, North White, North Newton, and South Newton. Several teaching positions expected at all levels 1-12, but pay is well below public school counterparts.

Regional Predictions

Good afternoon. Shown below are my picks for tomorrow's regional games.

Last week, i picked 41 sectional winners correctly (64%). For all games played last week, I picked

270 games correctly and missed 69 (80% correct).

Enjoy the games.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Good Times Ahead for Morgan Twp

rh4samessxezp46hmxg5

Morgan Twp girls - Departing Coach Rick Budka
VALPARAISO, Ind. -- (Updated 3/8) Coach Budka ends a long tenure with the Cherokees after finishing Sectional champions and with a 17-8 record last season. MT looks at what could be another solid season, as they are on paper to return almost 35 points a game. Good Varsity Clubber reports just two seniors and only 13 PPG to graduate. 5-7 sr-2-b guards Madi Lemmons and Josie Lemmons should be back along with their 20PPG. Several other experienced underclassmen are exected back as well. Morgan gets to play in the historic Porter County Conference. Report that feeder teams (both 8th and 7th) have advanced to the PCC tourney finals this season. Currently zero teaching positions at Morgan.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Clinton Central boys open with a warning

rczlrzwfywoquboj1cuc

Clinton Central Boys - Departing Coach Derek Davis
MICHIGANTOWN, Ind. -- (Updated 3/7) Coach Davis has stepped down after three seasons with the Bulldogs. Most recently the undermanned squad finished just 3-20. Good Varsity Club member reports they graduated leading scorer and several other starters. No real height. JV only won a few games. 8th grade was good against county teams and most teams their size. Varsity Club reports points out the real issue is there is a very involved grandparent of one of the 8th graders. No teaching as of right now, but some anticipated include: HS Ag, Eled, and MS Math

HH Varsity Club Insider: Austin boys with talent far down the line

gpik4xvvqewmzl3jsvla

Austin boys - Departing Coach Randy Edwards
AUSTIN, Ind. -- (Updated 3/8) Now confirmed that Coach Edwards will not return for an eighth year in Austin. The Eagles were 7-17 last season finished and 7th in the 9-team Mid-Southern Conference. Good Varsity Club member reports there was some unfounded optimism regarding them improving their record from the past year, but a combination of attitudes and inconsistency finished this team with pretty much the same record as the year before. From that group, reportedly three key contributors graduate. JV described as average. Looking way down the line, 8th grade described as below average. However, 7th grade went 23-0 this past season, and a Varsity Club member reports some kid dropped 50+ in one of their games. 6th and 5th grade decent. Community pressure to win in this town is legit. No teaching jobs at this time.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Providence Opening garners the 1st B.E.S.T. nominee of the Year

vfgaqxbnhdfqkveyn93h

Providence girls - Departing Coach Brad Burden
CLARKSVILLE, Ind. -- (Updated 3/7) Now official that well respected Coach Burden has resigned after 16 seasons leading the Pioneers. Good news first: Varsity Clubber reports that, at least on paper, plenty of talent coming back and coming in. Providence has a new state of the art weight facility and tons of success across the board athletically. Bad news: Politics galore. Another Varsity Club member reports a very overactive group of parents and an admin that gives them voice. Both reports underline the fact that basketball must compete with volleyball and soccer. For those brave enough to apply at a potential B.E.S.T. candidate school, current openings at Providence include HS French, HS English, HS Math, HS Spanish, HS Science, and a Theology position. Editorial comment - Wonder what the theology is regarding creating a work environment that would make a successful career coach want to leave?

HH Varsity Club Insider: Tell City boys trying Climb out of Hole

ebh6w5odyndizc9lxyvq

Tell City boys - Departing Coach Greg Hollinden
TEL CITY, Ind. -- (Updated 5/7) Coach Holinden’s position is officially posted on the TC school corp cite. To say it has been a rough couple of years for the Marksmen would be too kind. 1-23 and most recently 2-22. The undermanned teams were really up against it talent-wise. For the second year in a row, only 1 or 2 seniors dotted their young roster. 5-11 Sr-2-b guard Byron Meserve has hit for double figures several times, and will again likely lead a limited cast. 6-0 sr-2-b Talon Jennings is expected back after two seasons at point. There are a handful of 6-2 and 6-3 kids that will likely rotate in the front court, but that’s it for height. The 13-team Pocket Athletic Conference has been murder for the Marksmen, and will still be an uphill fight. A handful of well placed muffins on the schedule, should provide for W’s long term, but very little is easy in these difficult times. Varsity Club member reports that next season should see a slight bump in the W/L column due to experience and some other teams losing players etc. However, 6-7 wins would be considered a great step. VA position also listed as open at TC. Varsity Club report goes onto mention no world beaters in 8th grade group, but the team is competitive against Pocket Conference member schools. One of the cooler old gyms around, and solid traditional following Also home of the finest pretzels on the planet.

HH Varsity Club Insider: Lean times ahead for Mt. Vernon(P) program

tcdqzqtajrhxkle1t305

Mt. Vernon girls - Departing Coach Kendra Steinhart
MT. VERNON, Ind. -- (Updated 5/7) Coach Steinhart departs after four seasons with the Wildcats. Last season was another rough one for the offensively challenged Posey County squad, going just 3-21. Good Varsity Club member reports that barring move-ins, matching last year’s 3-win total might be a challenge. Varsity Clubber emails that although only two seniors graduate, one of them was their leading scorer (9PPG) and rebounder (8RPG.) Beyond that only about 15PPG returns, and it is spread across a roster of 8-9 players that logged varsity time last season. It was so bad last season, that report points to several games where Wildcat turnovers outnumbered their total points on the scoreboard. It will be a true rebuild, and patience will be needed. MOre of the same from a JV squad that won 6 games and put up about 25 game while wracking-up nearly as many TO’s. Given the current talent level at the high school, even more emphasis falls on what the junior high squads have coming-up and as yet, I have been unable to field that report. I have several emails out. No timeline on this hire. HS Math, HS Music, and Eled are it right now.

Indiana Academic All-State Teams Announced!

Seventy-six Indiana high school seniors -- 38 boys and 38 girls -- have been chosen as first-team Academic All-State for 2024 by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced Tuesday (March 5).

In addition, 218 more boys and 204 more girls were recognized as honorable mention Academic All-State for 2024, IBCA executive director Marty Johnson said. In total, 498 players received some level of recognition in this year's IBCA Academic All-State program.

The IBCA Academic All-State program is one where academic prowess and athletic prowess both are considered in the selections. Items such as grade-point average, academic class rank and SAT or ACT scores are considered along with athletic performance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game.

"The quality of these student-athletes shows that success in academics and success in athletics are not separate entities," Johnson said. "Rather, in many cases, a player's success in the classroom directly contributes to his or her success on the floor."

IBCA-member head coaches from schools across the state may nominate their senior student-athletes who meet criteria that include a 3.50 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of one's class and either an SAT score of 1100 (on the reading and math sections) or an ACT composite score of 24. Once nominations were received, an IBCA committee reviewed the information and determined awards for first team and honorable mention.

Those selected will receive certificates from the IBCA for their honor. Plans are for certificates to be distributed in PDF form to coaches via e-mail during April for the coach to print. The coach then may present the certificate to each honored player sometime before the conclusion of the 2023-24 academic year.

The IBCA has selected an Academic All-State team for boys since 1973. The program was expanded to include a girls' Academic All-State team in 1980.

Boys' first-team players for 2024 are: Isaac Andrews, Wapahani; Jaskirat Banwait, Whiteland; Sam Essegian, Whitko; Ashton Federspiel, Norwell; Grant Ford, Wabash; Evan Gagnon, North Newton; Cayden Gehlhausen, Evansville North; Noah Godlevske, Bedford North Lawrence; Nolan Hackleman, North Putnam; Aiden Hibbard, Elkhart Christian Academy; Lowell Hillis, Lewis Cass; Clayton Hull, Madison-Grant; Drew Kegerreis, Roncalli; Nolan Kinsella, Munster; Kyler Krull, Whitko; Caleb Lehrman, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger; Jamison Lewis, Southwestern (Hanover); Bryson Luter, Lawrence Central; Dylan Maxwell, East Central; Micah McClure, Adams Central; Jackson McGee, Leo; Drew McKaig, Pioneer; Jack Miller, Scottsburg; Mason Moulton, Yorktown; Zach Nash, Huntington North; Connor O’Guinn, Bloomington North; Grant Porath, Brownsburg; Spencer Proctor, Anderson; Brady Rife, Wheeler; Trever Roy, Hebron; Joey Schmitz, Center Grove; Carter Snepp, Southwestern (Shelby); Robert Sorensen, Guerin Catholic; Colin Taylor, New Castle; Kaden Temple, Eastern (Pekin); Kieran Tewari, Yorktown; Ethan Wolfe, NorthWood; and Ethan Zeiser, Maconaquah.

Girls' first-team players for 2024 are: Madisyn Bailey, Bedford North Lawrence; Allie Boyer, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian; Kaleigh Butts, Perry Meridian; Mary Cox, Monrovia; Morgan Cross, Northridge; Alexandra Cutka, Wheeler; Alexandra DeLisle, Speedway; Skylar Ferry, Hanover Central; Lauren Foster, Indian Creek; Daniella Galvez, Speedway; Becca Gerdt, Valparaiso; Sarah Gick, Benton Central; Rachel Harshman, Mooresville; Emma Hart, New Castle; Carley Higgins, Paoli; Peyton Honchar, Morgan Township; Grace King, Indianapolis Lutheran; Taylor Lewis, Indianapolis Cathedral; Victoria Mann, Bloomington Lighthouse Christian; Elle Marble, Jeffersonville; Nicole Mears, Franklin County; Ellery Minch, Mt.
