Every year at this time, I post the restaurant directory for corrections and additions. For a variety of reasons there seems to be a lot more turnover in the world of restaurants the last few years. Feel free to post additions and corrections here in this thread, or simply email me or even text. I'll be glad to make the edits!

Hickory Husker Pigskin Pick'em - Week 2 Results

To a very great degree, our contestants were of one mind in Week 2. Out of 13 players, 12 of them picked 3A #12 Monrovia in this round, easily the most to pick the same team in any week in the 13 years I have been the administrator of this contest. The Bulldogs proved our contestants' confidence in them to be well founded as they clipped the wings of the Phalen Academy Falcons in a 65-point shutout victory, the largest winning margin for the week by 25 points. Three of our teams - Milan, 2A #11 Rochester, and 2A #1 Evansville Mater Dei - suffered losses in Week 2. Four of our nine teams remain undefeated: 4A #8 Columbia City, 6A #8 Fishers, 3A #7 Hanover Central, and Monrovia.

With nearly all of our contestants picking the same team, there was no movement at the top of our leaderboard this week. EHS_HOOPS and Mr. B.A. remain tied for the lead with 114 points. A five-way tie exists for third between Ed Stachulak, hhsdawg, Quad Runner, Rob Deweese, and ysuindy, each with 109 points.

Here are the games for Week 2 with scores, point margins, and the number of players who picked each one:

Monrovia 65, Phalen Academy 0 (65 points, 12 players)
Fishers 40, Pike 0 (40 points, no players)
Seymour 42, Jeffersonville 7 (35 points, 1 player)
Columbia City 42, Plymouth 14 (28 points, no players)

Batesville 21, Milan 0 (-21 points, no players)
Tippecanoe Valley 39, Rochester 8 (-31 points, no players)

Hickory Husker Pigskin Pick'em - Week 1 Results

Only four teams were picked by our 13 contestants in the opening round of this year's contest. 6A #10 Fishers was the most popular pick, and the five players who selected them received 44 points for the Tigers' shutout of the North Central Panthers. The largest margin of victory this week belonged to the 2A #11 Rochester Zebras in their 56-7 win over the Wabash Apaches. Seymour and 1A #5 Sheridan suffered losses to Greenwood and 3A #9 Western Boone, respectively. Fortunately, none of our contestants picked either of the teams which found themselves on the wrong end of the score.

By virtue of picking Rochester in Week 1, EHS_HOOPS and Mr. B.A. are tied for the lead with 49 points. We have a five-way tie for third between Ed Stachulak, hhsdawg, Quad Runner, Rob Deweese, and ysuindy, each with 44 points. Next week we will see if anyone can put some distance between them and their competitors!

Here are the games for Week 1 with scores, point margins, and the number of players who picked each one:

Rochester 56, Wabash 7 (49 points, 2 players)
Fishers 44, North Central (Indianapolis) 0 (44 points, 5 players)

IHSAA working with RefReps for online officiating education

Via IHSAA Press Release:

Indiana high school athletics has more than its share of well-known traditions, though the pursuit of game officials tends to settle quietly into the background.

However, it, too, remains a most vital component in order for every one of the 22 sports sanctioned by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) to complete its season as seamlessly as possible.

The IHSAA in an effort to not only expand its pool of officials, but broaden each individual’s knowledge, is working with RefReps, which offers comprehensive online officiating education courses that include an interactive training video, instructor guides, assessments and more.

RefReps’ mission is to educate the next generation of high school sports officials so that he or she is best equipped with the skills necessary before confidently setting foot on the football field, wrestling mat, softball diamond, etc.

“What is unique about Indiana is it was the first state to pilot this in the high schools,” said Kyle Armstrong, founder and CEO of RefReps, which is now in its third year. “In the spring of 2022, we had seven high schools pilot this, and, if you fast-forward to today, we’ll be in around 500 schools in 33 different states.”

Representing Indiana on the ground floor of this effort were, in alphabetical order, Avon, Bedford North Lawrence, Brownsburg, Kokomo, Mitchell, Pioneer and South Bend Adams.

The number grew to 51 Indiana high schools incorporating RefReps during the 2022-2023 school year; in excess of 100 are expected to take part this school year.

“If you look at the trajectory of licensed officials in Indiana from the 2015-2016 school year to 2016-2017, it went up by 43 officials,” said Armstrong. “That was the last year the number went up, and every year up to 2021-2022, it had dropped by over 1,000 officials.

“It had gone down, down, down, down, down, and, boom, we do the pilot program, and it goes up by over 300 officials.”

The global outbreak of COVID-19 eliminated all high school sports in Indiana during the 2020 spring season, decreasing the number of officials to 5,829 during the uncertain times surrounding the 2021-2022 school year.

A comeback of sorts took place in 2022-2023 with the number rising to 6,158.

Compare this to the 2016-2017 school year in which there were 6,907 officials. There was a time, according to IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Brian Lewis, where that total regularly exceeded 7,000 officials.

RefReps is helping push these numbers back up.

“The two years following COVID, we saw a big drop. Many officials paused during COVID and then never returned. We are beginning to see an increased number of officials, but we must continue to get the next generation of officials started,” said Lewis. “There is a myriad of reasons for the official shortage across the country.”

“We have a shortage of officials because there are more contests being played, whether it’s travel ball or something else. The average age of officials is upwards of 54 years old, so as they retire, are we getting enough of the next generation involved?”
The uncertainty brought on by a pandemic played a role in the decrease in officials.

However, other factors trickled in. One being persons no longer wanting to subject themselves to hostile fan bases.

“I think part of it is we went through a two-year span of contests not being played or fans being limited,” said Lewis. “People were at home. They were sitting in their house. We come out of that, and sportsmanship, egregious behavior has just been off the charts. We are seeing it more in the travel world, and in the AAU world, but it’s starting to sneak into education-based athletics. Officials, prefer to officiate in an education-based system because we have administrators and staff who can control that atmosphere a little bit.”

Using RefReps in state high schools and colleges enables Indiana to cast a wider net than before in gauging the interest of young people interested in becoming a high school official.

According to Armstrong, the program is extremely flexible in that it can be taught.

“Most high schools will have an actual stand-alone sports officiating class,” he said. “The second option is to take our materials and use them in the pre-existing physical education classes.”

For more information, prospective high school officials can go to refreps.com.

“We want to increase the number of new officials, but I’ll get calls all the time saying you need to lower your expectations, or you need to lower your standards, and we’re not going to do that,” said Lewis. “We hold our officials to a very high standard, and we are not going to sacrifice those standards to increase numbers. We are in the business of education-based athletics and the business of kids.”

“We have different requirements when it comes to tournament eligibility, but we’re looking at ways to give younger officials the ability to advance in the officiating world to make that a little bit easier.”

Please give these idiots that maximum.

[FAIRLAND — A basketball coach from Cincinnati has been arrested and charged with assault and confinement, stemming from an incident at Triton Central High School in July.

An investigation found that coach Laquita Carter confined and assaulted a female basketball official after a game involving her team — Cincinnati Lions Elite. The assault included ripping the wig off the officials in a manner that also removed her natural hair from her scalp.]

It's Time for Hickory Husker Pigskin Pick'em!

Football season is here, which means it's time for the Hickory Husker Pigskin Pick'em! This is your opportunity to compete with other Varsity Club members in a fun contest where you can display your knowledge of Indiana high school football.

The basic concept of the contest is simple. From a list of nine teams, you select one as your pick each week of the regular season. The number of points you are awarded for that week is your pick's margin of victory in their game (points will be subtracted if they lose!). Each team on the list can be picked only once; therefore, you should attempt to use each team as your pick in a week when you think they will have a big win. The contestant with the most points at the end of the season will be our champion!

Please note these specific rules:
  • Picks must be emailed to shsfan475@gmail.com (include your real name or your Varsity Club username with your pick - however you want to be listed in the standings).
  • Only teams on the list can be used as picks.
  • Each team on the list can be used only once.
  • Picks can be sent in one week at a time, multiple weeks at a time, or you can send in all your picks for the season in one email -- your choice.
  • Picks are due by 6:00 pm ET Friday each week.
  • Picks that have been submitted can be changed as long as the change is received by the deadline for that week.
  • If a game for one of the teams on the list is postponed, points for it will be awarded when the game is played on its rescheduled date.
  • If you do not submit a pick for a given week, you will receive points for the team with the worst margin in that week's game, or zero points, whichever is less.
  • In the event of a tie at the end of the contest, the winner will be the contestant who comes closest to predicting the total combined score of the eight teams playing at Indiana Wesleyan's Wildcat Football Stadium on September 16 (Blackford vs. Elwood; Frankton vs. Mississinewa; Madison-Grant vs. Oak Hill; Alexandria vs. Eastbrook). Predictions for the tiebreaker must be submitted no later than September 15 at 6:00 pm ET.
Here is the list of teams for this season's contest:
  • 6A Fishers
  • 5A Seymour
  • 4A Columbia City
  • 3A Hanover Central
  • 3A Monrovia
  • 2A Evansville Mater Dei
  • 2A Rochester

It's Coach Granger at Heritage Christian!

acemahaqy7ldtmmtmhol

Heritage Christian boys - Departing Coach Brandon Coffer (Interim)
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- (Updated 3/14) Interim Coach Coffer went 3-6 during his time leading the Eagles. The entire campaign finished at 11-12 a first round Sectional exit courtesy of Brebeuf. Varsity Club report predicts a step back for the Eagles next season, as shit ton graduates. A couple of underclassmen earned varsity minutes, but none were major contributors in any way. On the bright side, JV was pretty solid last season, but those guys will have to make that big step to varsity level. Despite Heritage Christian’s small enrollment, report states they field two teams in both 7th and 8th grade which helps. HC boasts one of the larger coaching staffs in the area, and while inside interest is expected, Varsity Clubbers states finding a dynamic outside candidate may be the goal of some in the hiring process. Report continues, “After all, no one grows up in the Heritage Christian school district dreaming of playing in blue. Every kid, every family has to choose to go here. That personality is a must.” Love it or hate it, that is probably very true. Only teaching gig at this point in the early spring is HS English. Not timeline yet. (Updated 3/25) More insight now that Heritage has officially opened their interim position. Coach Coffer went 3-6 after Coach Warren Wallace resigned offering a cryptic, “Working relationship” issue as the reason in late January. Link to story, but don’t look for much clarity - https://www.yahoo.com/now/warren-wallace-resigns-heritage-christian-154602682.html Good Varsity Clubber reports five seniors graduate not the least of which, Purdue recruit Myles Colvin. The 6-6 stud feasted on 3A HC’s schedule, which included 11 1A and 2A opponents. Incoming coach will likely need that schedule as the talent level reportedly drops-off the table. But getting back to Myles. Good Varsity Club member reports that there are several issues that will/could impact new coach. One being perceived lack of support from admin when attempting to discipline a star player. Another is the long standing conflict of players growing up within a program only to lose playing time to transfer studs. Both problems allegedly played a role in last year’s star-studded 11-12 mark (and first round Sectional ousting via Brebeuf.) A Varsity Clubber familiar with the program reports that a core of 4-5 srs-2-b did log varsity time last year, although none went for more than a handful of buckets a game. Internal interest expected, but unclear which direction admin wants to go at this point. HS English is about it. JV described as solid. (Updated 5/15) Good Varsity Clubber reports Heritage Christian will have assistant AD, Aaron Larson, run the boys basketball summer program. He is a former assistant coach at Taylor University. (Updated 8/11) Good Varsity Club member reports Tre Granger hire.
