Slightly off topic here.

I went to the Horizon League semi-finals last night. The league has taken a big step back in the last decade. At best its at the back end of mid maor leagues and realistically is a high end low major league.

But the trends of how college basketball rosters are constructed were quite evident.

Of the 20 starters last night:

13 were from the transfer portal
4 were from junior colleges
3 were recruited out of high school by their teams

6 og the 20 starters are international students - quite a few played high school / prep school in the US.

I will be back again tonight to watch my alma mater - Youngstown State. 2 of the 9 players who played last night were on last year's team. One of the two redshirted last year. 2 returnees are out injured for the season.

Maybe as the extra Covid years run out there will be more room in Division 1 for high school recruits, but its just so hard for guys to find a place. Go to a school that wants you. If you're good enough, the portal will find you a home.

As for tonight hoping the Penguins can leave the Never Made the Tournament Club. Joined Division I for 1981-82. Were within ten seconds of making it in 1985. It is time.
