Portage boys – Departing Coach Rick Snodgrass

PORTAGE, Ind. – (Updated 3/12) Coach Snodgrass is retiring after 384 wins. He’s a career coach (37 years) that will be missed by the fraternity for sure. Portage went 9-15 last season but won 7 of their last 11. Good Varsity Clubber reports the Indians started two sophomores - 6'4 Kamari Slaughter - 12.8 ppg. 6.1 rpg. 3.5 apg. (two year starter - averaged 15.4 ppg 8.6 rpg last year) and 5'7 Jaelen Hollies - 9.2 ppg. 1.3 rpg 3.1 apg (started second half of his freshman season - averaged 3.0 ppg) Portage also started 1 junior - 6'3 Blake Creech - 6.2 ppg. 4.7 rpg. 1.1 apg. (two year starter - averaged 6.1 ppg. 5.0 rpg last year.) Varsity Club member also indicates this is a much better job that it was when open six years ago. At that time the Duneland Conference was still playing a double round robin 14 game conference schedule. Given how tough the Duneland is/was, that can be murder. Additional report backs up the first pointing to three solid players to build around for next year but not much height in the program. The junior varsity was 12-7 and freshman 9-9. The Duneland Conference (DAC) is loaded for next year as Valpo, Chesterton, Michigan City, Crown Point and Merrillville bring most of their teams back. A lot of names already being bantered about for this one including: Bryon Clouse - Hanover Central (Portage grad), Scott Bowersock - Washington Township, Dominique Nelson – Calumet, Drew Eubank – Westville, Bob Burke - Lake Station, Eric Speer - Hammond Morton, Fred Mooney - Former coach at Michigan City Marquette, Donovan Garletts - Former coach at Michigan City Marquette, and Cory McKim - junior varsity coach at Portage. Openings include: HS Physical Science, MS Social Studies (7th), MS Social Studies (8th)
