Just a reminder that anyone looking for a fun basketball game should check out the North-East game at Columbus North Friday night (boys version, girls game is tonight). Beside the normal rivalry, which always features a highly competitive game surrounded by interesting student behavior in the stands, several other attractions will take place. First, this game honors former Columbus basketball star Chuck Taylor by encouraging all to "Wear your Chucks" to the game. This promotion included the creation of a special Chuck Taylor basketball shoe, blue for North fans and orange for East, made available to the public. I'm told over 4500 were sold at a discount price of $55 per.
Another story line is that the 1963-64 Columbus team will be honored at halftime. This team went undefeated in the regular season, ranked # 1 almost the entire year, before being eliminate in the afternoon game of the state finals by Huntington. 7 seniors on that team went on to play college basketball, 6 at the D1 level.
Memorial gym in Columbus hasn't been filled often since those days, and probably won't come close to being filled that night but should be a lot of fun. I'm sure there will be plenty of room for anyone buying a ticket at the door.
