Looking at the list of 4A sectional champs today reveals that 11 of the 15 champions are among the 64 biggest schools in the state (according to the IHSAA enrollment figures just released). If heavily favored Homestead beats Jay Co. tomorrow night it will be 12 of 16. The outliers thus far are Richmond (#68), Northridge (75), S.B. Riley (79), and Monday's winner at Evansville ( Reitz is #70, Central #82). Jay County is #98. It is worth noting that Anderson at #36 is the only school larger than Richmond in the New Castle sectional and Castle at #32 is the only school in the top 64 at Evansville. Neither has an enrollment of 2000 +.
On the girls' side, 13 of 16 4A champs come from the top 64. The exceptions were Richmond, Mooresville (#71) and Evansville Central (where Castle has won the past 3 and 13 of 18 sectional titles).
Of course the whole purpose of class basketball was to level the playing field -unless you happen to be in the bottom third of 4A. Then it's still ok to screw you for the sake of convenience and the IHSAA's perverse interpretation of "equal". Or if you happen to be in a location in the bottom two classes where restricted-enrollment, unrestricted-school-boundary privates are placed in your sectional.
Still scratching my head at why what seems to be good for football isn't good for basketball.
