[As ideas go, the press release sending Griffith coach Gary Hayes into coaching free agency was a bad one.
The Griffith school system released him into orbit without his knowledge.
The release, which originated from a marketing/public relations firm called "The Idea Factory," cheerily led with a quote from Hayes that said it was a "perfect time for boys basketball to transition to a new coach. I am proud of the team we've built and prouder still of the young men I have been privileged to mentor."
The idea was that someone else was going to start coaching Griffith next season when it moved from the Northwest Crossroads Conference to the Greater South Shore Conference.
The problem with the statement is Hayes didn't know it was coming. I was the first to tell him the news on May 25 when I called. He was eating dinner at Ciao Bella Ristorante in Schererville.
The food didn't taste so good after that.]
