Two recently appointed college head coaches also will serve as replacement speakers at the 2024 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association annual clinic, it was announced Monday (April 16).
Pat Kelsey, new men’s coach at the University of Louisville, and Hannah Varel, new women’s coach at Transylvania University, have been added to the lineup for the IBCA’s annual event that is set for April 25-26 at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville.
Kelsey is taking the leadoff spot on April 25 in place of Kansas University coach Bill Self, who is unable to appear because of a last-minute scheduling conflict. Self has committed to being an in-person speaker at the 2025 IBCA Clinic.
Varel is stepping into the lineup on April 26 on behalf of former Transylvania women’s coach Juli Fulks, who last week was named the new women’s head coach at Marshall University.
Kelsey has been highly successful in 12 seasons as a head coach, including the last three seasons at College of Charleston and the previous nine seasons at Winthrop University. The former Xavier University player and assistant coach boasts a .681 win percentage (261-122) and four NCAA Tournament appearances in his head coaching career, including a 27-8 mark and NCAA Tournament berth this past season at Charleston.
Varel becomes a first-time head coach after serving as associate head coach at Transylvania last season and a TU assistant coach the previous three seasons. Over the past four seasons, she helped guide the Pioneers to a 105-8 record. That impressive 92.9 win percentage included a 31-1 mark and NCAA Division III national semifinal appearance this past season, a 33-0 undefeated Division III championship in 2022-23 and a 27-1 ledger and Division III national quarterfinal spot in 2021-22. Varel previously was an a women’s assistant coach at Hanover College.
The remainder of the 2024 IBCA Clinic two-day lineup remains as originally announced – Indiana Fever coach Christie Sides, Notre Dame men’s coach Micah Shrewsberry, Michigan men’s coach Dusty May, Michigan women’s coach Kim Barnes Arico, Evansville men’s coach David Ragland and Bellarmine men’s coach Scott Davenport.
In addition to the in-person speakers, video sessions from the six IBCA district coaches of the year will be made available in an online format. Boys’ coaches offering online videos are Clint Swan of Crown Point, Matt Luce of Wapahani and Dave Benter of Brownstown Central. Girls’ coaches offering online videos are Eric Thornton of Norwell, Kaley May of Danville and Angie Hinton of Lanesville.
Doors open for the 2024 IBCA Clinic at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, April 25, and first-day sessions run through 8:45 p.m. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. Friday, April 26 and conclude about 3:10 p.m. Cost to attend the clinic is $50 for current-year IBCA members and $100 for non-members.
