State champion girls headline IBCA Players of the Week
Parrish, Bostic, Nolan and Robey cited after titles; Martin, Smith, Johnson-Hall and Mefford also honored
Hamilton Southeastern junior Sydney Parrish, Northwestern junior Kendall Bostic and Marquette Catholic senior Sophia Nolan each produced a double-double in a state championship game, and that trio of champions headlines the honorees in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.
Oak Hill senior Kaela Robey is a fourth honoree from a state title team, while Portage senior Maurion Martin, Lake Station Edison senior Dominique Smith, Crawfordsville sophomore Jesse Johnson-Hall and Southwestern (Hanover) sophomore Foster Mefford also are recipients for the week of Feb. 18-23 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Martin and Smith are the boys’ recipients and Nolan is the girls’ honoree for District 1. Johnson-Hall collected boys’ accolades for District 2, while Parrish, Bostic and Robey are girls’ co-winners for District 2. Mefford received boys’ honors for District 3.
The 6-2 Parrish totaled 30 points with 10 rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot in keying the Hamilton Southeastern girls to a 55-44 victory over Lawrence North for the Class 4A championship in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Parrish hit 11-of-16 shots, including one 3-pointer, plus 7-of-7 free throws as the Royals completed their season with a 27-1 record.
Bostic – a Michigan State commit – tallied 25 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, seven steals and six blocks in lifting the Northwestern girls to a second consecutive Class 3A state championship with a 61-39 triumph over Benton Central. The 6-1 forward converted 11-of-16 field goals, one 3-pointer and 2-of-2 free throws as the Tigers finished 27-3.
The 5-9 Robey scored 20 points with two rebounds, two assists and one steal to help the Oak Hill girls claim the Class 2A crown with a 54-42 decision over Winchester. Robey went 8-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the line as the Golden Eagles ended their season at 25-3.
Nolan tossed in 26 points with 15 rebounds, three steals and four blocks in leading the Marquette Catholic girls to a 57-36 victory over Vincennes Rivet in a Class A championship rematch. The 6-1 forward, a Saint John’s signee, sank 10-of-13 shots, 4-of-4 3-pointers and 2-of-4 free throws as the Blazers closed their season at 27-2.
Martin and Smith each went off in the same game, Martin pouring in 49 points and Smith countering with 44 points – including a 55-foot shot at the end of regulation to tie the game and force overtime – as Lake Station Edison outlasted Portage 95-94.
The 6-2 Martin added 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals against Lake Station, then followed with a triple-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals in an 80-65 victory over Hammond Morton as the Indians improved to 10-14. Martin passed 1,000 career points during the week and now has 1,063. Over both games, Martin hit 19-of-28 field goals, 1-of-3 3-pointers and 24-of-30 free throws. In the 49-point outing, he was 16-of-22, 1-of-3 and 16-of-20.
Beyond his 44 points, Smith also contributed 11 rebounds and six assists against Portage. The 5-8 guard followed with 21 points, four rebounds and five assists in a 60-37 decision over Morgan Township as the Eagles improved to 17-6. Smith became Lake Station’s career scoring leader in the latter game, now totaling 1,419 career points and passing 2015 graduate Brian Patterson with 1,414. Over both games, Smith hit 21-of-54 shots, 8-of-22 3-pointers and 15-of-19 free throws.
The 6-6 Johnson-Hall scored 31 points with 13 rebounds and one steal in the only game of the week for the Crawfordsville boys, a 77-71 triumph over Covington. He went 11-of-15 from the floor, 2-of-4 from distance and 7-of-8 from the line as the Athenians improved to 16-6.
Mefford erupted for 41 points as the Southwestern (Hanover) boys ran past South Dearborn 94-68 in their only game of the week. The 6-1 guard added seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals as the Rebels completed their regular season with a 22-1 record. Medford hit 18-of-24 field goals, 1-of-2 from 3-point land and 4-of-4 free throws for his big game.
This is the 11th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the seventh season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA.
