Jones scores 50 and 59, leads IBCA Players of the Week
Austin, Meurer, Felling, Blackmon and Curry join Western Boone star as honorees
Madison Jones twice broke her school’s single-game scoring record and eclipsed 2,000 career points while averaging 54.5 points over two games, and the Western Boone senior headlines the recipients in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.
Jones is joined by Lake Station Edison sophomore Taylor Austin, North Knox senior Makinzi Meurer, Triton Central senior Wyatt Felling, Marion sophomore Jalen Blackmon and Fort Wayne Northrop senior Sydney Curry as honorees for the week of Jan. 21-26 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Curry is the boys’ winner and Austin is the girls’ winner for District 1. Blackmon and Jones collected respective boys’ and girls’ accolades for District 2. Felling and Meurer are the recipients for District 3.
The 5-7 Jones poured in a school-record 50 points with five rebounds, two assists and four steals as the Western Boone girls rallied from 25 points behind to upset Benton Central 69-67. The Davenport University (Mich.) recruit followed by breaking her own mark with 59 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals in an 87-30 decision over North Montgomery as the Stars improved to 14-9.
Jones hit 16-of-23 field goals, 7-of-11 3-pointers and 11-of-14 free throws against Benton Central. She was 19-of-38 from the field, 6-of-12 from distance and 15-of-18 from the line against North Montgomery. She now has a school-record 651 points for the season and a career total of 2,013. Jones had held the previous single-game school record of 49 points.
The 5-5 Austin averaged 30.5 points, 5.0 assists and 5.5 steals in leading the Lake Station girls (15-6) to a pair of triumphs. She opened with 24 points, three rebounds, five assists and five steals in a 66-56 victory over Covenant Christian (DeMotte). Austin later broke loose for 37 points, nine rebounds, five assists and six steals as the Eagles beat LaCrosse 67-58. Over both games, Austin sank 24-of-45 shots, including 6-of-14 3-pointers, plus 7-of-11 free throws.
Meurer averaged 32.0 points and 8.5 rebounds over two games while become the all-time leading scorer for the North Knox girls (16-7). The 5-5 guard opened with a career-high 38 points plus nine rebounds, five assists and seven steals in a 58-45 victory over Barr-Reeve. She followed with 26 poitns, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 60-44 setback to Loogootee. The University of Evansville track recruit set school records for season points (568) and career points (1,721) while hitting 19-of-32 field goals, 4-of-6 3-pointers and 22-of-23 free throws over both games.
The 5-11 Felling averaged 46.0 points and 5.5 rebounds while becoming his school’s all-time leading scorer in two games for the Triton Central boys (6-9). He exploded for 51 points with six rebounds, two assists and four steals in a 101-68 triumph over Indiana Math & Science. Felling followed with 41 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals in a 78-76 overtime loss to Indianapolis Scecina. Over both games, Felling hit 24-of-49 shots, 5-of-15 3-pointers and 39-of-43 free throws. That included 14-of-28, 3-of-9 and 20-of-21 in the 51-point outing. He moved his career total to 1,325 points, passing the previous school mark of 1,281 points set by Mike Wells from 1961-65.
Blackmon averaged 35.5 points and surpassed 1,000 career points in the middle of his second season in propelling the Marion boys (9-5) to a pair of victories. First, the 6-2 guard scored 32 points with four rebounds, six assists and two steals in a 91-74 decision over Logansport. Blackmon followed with 39 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals as the Giants outlasted Fort Wayne Northrop 91-82. Over both games, Blackmon was 19-of-38 from the field, 10-of-21 from distance and 23-of-25 from the line while moving his career point total to 1,036.
The 6-8 Curry averaged 30.5 points and 13.0 rebounds over two games for the Fort Wayne Northrop boys (11-4). The Miami (Ohio) recruit totaled 20 points with nine rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocks as the Bruins knocked off Homestead 68-62. Curry then produced 41 points with 17 rebounds and four blocks despite his team dropping the 91-82 shootout at Marion. Over both games, Curry was 26-of-37 on field goals while hitting two 3-pointers and five free throws.
One other notable item: Penn senior Noah Applegate became his school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,445 points. Applegate combined for 36 points in victories over Mishawaka and Goshen to move past the Kingsmen’s previous career scoring leader, 1,433 points set by Keith Berkey from 1960-64.
This is the 11th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the seventh season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its seventh season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to "train hard and eat fresh."
Winners in the Player of the Week are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following Feb. 23. Boys winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 23.
