[Tyler Scherer held back tears as he was informing the Tri-County boys basketball team he was no longer their coach.
On Wednesday night, the Tippecanoe School Corp. board approved Scherer as the successor to the legendary Rick Peckinpaugh, who stepped down last month after 32 seasons on the McCutcheon sideline.
"I was obviously an anxious wreck over the whole thing," said Scherer, who spent the last decade at Tri-County. "You have two great programs to choose from. It didn't take long before they said, 'Coach, you can't be upset. No one will forget what you did here. You've got to do what is best for you.' "]
