[February 17, 1961. That’s a date that few can remember, but one that will never be forgotten by a local man.
On that cold winter night 56 years ago, a northern Cass County boy did something that was record breaking. Something no one before him had done and no one since has touched.
A young man from Metea High School donned his basketball uniform for the last regular season game of his high school career. The Hornet senior then went out and had the game of a lifetime. Big John Williamson, the hoops standout for the little Metea Hornets, exploded for 60 points in a game against Tipton Township.
Though the 60 points he scored that night is in itself an amazing feat, he could’ve had more than that. After he’d hit the 60-point mark in the fourth quarter his coach pulled him from the game ending his night.
According to Williamson, he would’ve had even more if he’d been a better free throw shooter.]
