I stopped at the Martin's Supermarket in Goshen today, filled my cart and headed for the checkout lane. As the cashier, a young man in his early twenties, unloaded my cart, he asked if I would like to donate a dollar to fight cancer. As a cancer survivor I'm always glad to donate to the cause, so I said sure. He handed me a round card stock imprinted with a basketball and asked me to sign it; at the bottom of the card was the name Marvin Wood.

I asked the cashier and the young man bagging the groceries if they had ever heard of Marvin Wood. they both gave me a strange look as they said, "no". I told them he was a legendary Indiana High School coach who had coached at Mishawaka for a number of years. Neither of them seemed too impressed, I told them the reason his name was on the card was because he had fought lymphoma for a long time before he passed away. I was tempted to tell them to google "Marvin Wood" and read more about him, but neither of them seemed to be listening so I grabbed my grocery bags and left, a little sadder and feeling a little older.
