St. Joe boys - Departing Coach Mark Johnson
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- (Updated 3/28) It would be easy to fill this space with lauding veteran Coach Johnson for all that he has brought to Indiana basketball. In a way it seems almost disrespectful to dismiss it and list what the coaching vacancy looks like, but that is the purpose here. Still, here is a flat out great article about Coach Johnson reflecting on a 36 year career. in South Bend Trib: https://www.southbendtribune.com/sp...cle_9d12d1b4-8efd-11eb-ab77-3bc72854c23b.html As far as what awaits the new Coach at St. Joe, several Varsity Club members offer up reports that mirror the same message. St. Joe will return some scrappers, but 20+ wins and a deep tourney run is walking across the graduation stage this spring. There are some tough kids expected to return with some grit, but given St. Joe's schedule, that winning carryover we often see from successful teams, may not be enough. So much height and offense leaves, .500 might well be considered a successful season. Very competitive Northern Indiana does the Indians no favors (Marian, Riley, Adams, Glenn, Penn, BRemen, Washington, Clay, Jimtown, New Prairie, and Elkhart.) Several reports of assistant Coach Eric Gaff as strong internal candidate - Concord, Grace College and overseas pro veteran. Coach Gaff reportedly already teaching PE at St. Joe.
