Merrillville girls – Departing Coach Amy Govert
MERRILLVILLE, Ind. – (Updated 4/30) Coach Govert has resigned after 16 years leading the Pirates. Her accolades are many, going 269-112 during that span and winning a host of titles along the way. Last year’s Sectional championship team was 14-6, and Varsity Club member reports next year’s Pirate team will look vastly different. Seven seniors graduate including almost all contributing players. Of the three underclass letter winners that saw varsity time, only about 16ppg expected back. Good Varsity Club member predicts that Pirates can still be competitive, but Duneland Conference is no joke. (Chesterton, Valpo, Portage, Crown Point, LaPorte, Michigan City, and Lake Central.) Varsity Clubber reports no shortage of teaching positions expected, but at this time only Eled, Sped, and HS Music.
