Marquette girls – Unbelievably Coach Jerry Bechtold’s contract will not be renewed after going 24-3 in his one season at Marquette. AD Tony Mytas told the NWI Times, “Marquette Catholic felt it was in the best interest to go in another direction with the girls basketball program…” What is especially interesting about this position is two-fold. First only one senior graduates from this very, very strong team, and she was not a true contributor. Second, the two best players on last year’s squad were both frosh. Other key members of last year’s team were also underclassmen, and expectations are off the charts for this particular group. Now, what really makes or breaks this job has to be the reason for Coach’s non-renewal. Clearly it’s not about winning. That much cannot be argued. From here on it gets more murky. Mixed reports of parent complaints to an admin that was more than happy to bend an ear, as well as those that point to a rocky relationship between coach and admin. Looking for more accurate accounts to clear this up before long, because talent-wise, Marquette looks to be among the best in the state.
