Highland boys – Departing Coach Jordan Heckard
HIGHLAND, Ind. – (Updated 5/18) Coach Heckard leaves Highland to take over at LaPorte. Highland Varsity was 12-11 last year, returning starting junior, 6'2 guard, Nick Steele. Good Varsity Club member reports Steele is a "do-everything" type player that wasn't relied on to score heavily this past season, but with many seniors graduating his role will certainly change. He has started since his sophomore year. Last year, he averaged 7.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2 apg, 2 spg. Also returning are 6'2 sophomore wing Alek Havlin (2.5 ppg), 5'10 junior guard Aerik Tanis (1 ppg). Varsity Clubber adds Highland graduates 9 seniors, 6 of which played double-digit minutes last year. JV was 11-7 this past season. Very strong 8th grade group reported that finished 2nd in conference as a 7th grade team, and went 4-2 last year in a Covid-shortened season. Many teaching openings listed on the school site: Social Studies, Science, PE, Guidance. Great support from administration and community. Nice perk of playing an 8-team home holiday tourney over Christmas break. Highland is always on the line between 3A/4A, but has recently been on the 4A side. Sectional 1 is certainly a challenging draw. Enrollment is around 1060.
