International boys - (Updated 4/14) Indy Star's Kyle Neddenriep reports that Coach Scott Schmelzer has stepped down to pursue a master's degree in sports administration at Belmont University. The Gryphons have gone 18-30 during his two years there. Good Varsity Club member reports this is an extremely tough place to coach. Enrollment is 165, in the bottom 30 of the IHSAA. Gym has a seating capacity of about 100 with just two sets of metal bleachers brought in from the soccer field. The program has never had a winning record. Coach Schmelzer went 11-14 this year, most wins ever in a season at ISI. Do-everything star Skylar Kolil and his 25.7 ppg graduates as do four other seniors who averaged a combined 18.6 ppg. 80% of the offense is gone as the Gryphons averaged 55 ppg last season. Only two players who averaged more than 3 ppg return, both were freshmen. Varsity Clubber goes on to reports being familiar with this this team, and his impression is they are going to struggle the next few years. ISI was 1-4 this year in the Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference. Liberty Christian, Shortridge and Attucks have been tough teams in the league. Greenwood Christian and Baptist Academy won Sectionals within the last three years. The Pioneer adds four teams next year including Seton Catholic (18-7 sectional champ and return star Desmond Bane), University (17-10 sectional runner-up), 2A Muncie Burris and Anderson Prep.
