Benton Central boys – Departing Coach Kyle Marlatt
Updated 7/27 -- Good Varsity Club member reports Coach Kyle Marlatt is resigning to take a higher paying position within the Tippy Valley system. Coach Marlatt was 33-61 with not much talent. Good Varsity Club member indicates a real need for stability after seven coaches since 2007. Good Varsity Club member reports a lot walked out the door in May including four contributing seniors. 6-4 Sr-2-b forward Johnny Lane is expected back and he finished last season as the teams leader in point and rebounds. A few underclassmen did log varsity minutes, so there should be able bodies to field a competitive squad, but good Varsity Clubber states topping last season’s 6-win mark will be challenging. Very cool gym. Feeder team records: JV:10-11 Frosh:4-5 8th:15-3 7th:5-13 Good Varsity Club member reports Social Studies, Spanish, and a handful of elementary openings to work with.
Charlestown girls – Departing Coach Michael Prichard
Updated 7/27 – Can now confirm that Coach Prichard has resigned at Charlestown. The Pirates have gone 47-24 during his time there. Last season Charlestown was 13-11. New Coach will enjoy some of the nicest facilities in southern Indiana in a basketball-first community. Also worth mentioning that all seem to speak highly of AD Chad Gilbert. Downside includes very tough conference and Sectional. Schedule loaded with 12 1A and 2A teams. Enough talent to win some games, but probably not enough to win 3A Sectional in next 3-4 years. Good Varsity Clubber indicates only two seniors depart and with them less than 15 ppg. However, Varsity Club member does go on to state that one of the grad losses carried most of the ball handling responsibilities. Pretty decent Jr-2-b group as well as pretty solid soph-2-b that logged considerable varsity time last season as a frosh. Another Varsity Clubber passes along that zero varsity help expected from JV.
