Guerin girls – Departing Coach Dave Roth
Indianapolis, Ind. – (Updated 2/20) Now official that Coach Dave Roth will not be returning for a third season at Guerin. Coach went 13-36 during his time there including 6-18 last season. Good Varsity Club member reports that after a disastrous 0-10 start, the Eagles were a little more competitive down the stretch. It could be argued that much of that was due to scheduling though. Regardless, the Eagles lost in the Sectional Semi’s to eventual champion Ritter by ten. Varsity Club member reports that Guerin loses six seniors, including leading scorer (11 ppg.) What is expected back is 5-7 jr-2-b guard Nicole Cunningham – their second leading scorer at about 8 ppg. Not a ton of points, but reports points out she did become more and more consistent as the year went on and appears ready to take the next step as a varsity level leader. Another expected back is soph-2-b Olivia Labus. The 5-10 post logged varsity time as a frosh, but struggled in many contests. She will be important due to the lack of interior players and interior defense. The rest of scoring looks to be by committee, as Varsity Club member indicates no one can be counted on to touch 6 points a game at this point. JV won 7 games last season, and offense again pointed to as the issue. Truth be told, given their pool of student/athletes, the Guerin athletic community expects to win on a consistent basis. Anything short of that is going to produce a hot seat. Obviously recruiting is not allowed by IHSAA members, but what is allowed and what a Varsity Club member reports is expected; is a winning program that will attract premier athletes on its own. The Circle City Conference is a different one to say the least: Heritage Christian, Chatard, Roncalli, Brebeuf, and Guerin. One name already being mentioned is VA Cindie Nemeth.
