Chesterton girls - Departing Coach Jack Campbell
CHESTERTON, Ind. -- Candy Wilson (Closed 3/22)
Valparaiso girls- Departing Coach Candy Wilson
VALPARAISO, Ind. -(Updated 3/22) Coach Wilson’s hire by rival Chesterton opens Valpo for the first time in ten years. Last year was another good one for the Vikings as they finished 19-8 and captured a Regional title. Good Varsity Club member reports really no reason to think that the Vikes won’t continue to be a northern Indiana power. Four seniors leave, but Coach Wilson regularly used a long bench, and plenty of skilled underclassmen saw substantial varsity time last season. Case in point is jr-2-b PG Lillian Barnes. New coach will likely see this leader on the court the next two seasons, and the 5-10 back-courter (17PPG, 7RPG, 5APG)) is already considered a strong candidate for Indiana All-Star play down the road. Several capable others are ready to step into starting roles without too much disruption from Valpo’s winning ways. Not to say that this job comes without parent politics etc, but this is a winner. Mixed messages on hiring path. Reports on internal interest, Riley Zimmer - assistant coach and Valpo teacher. However, another report states Valpo may look for big name from outside.
