Victory College Prep Boys - Departing Coach Isaac Smith
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- (Updated 3/5)
Now official that Coach Smith will not return after seven years leading the Firehawks. VCP has been an IHSAA Sectional tourney participant since 2018, but has yet to capture a title. For their first few IHSAA seasons they have been in the alphabet soup Sectional #59 of central Indiana’s charter/private/parochial 1A: Greenwood Christian, Tindley, Lutheran, Cristo Rey, and Central Christian. More than a few have speculated that was done by the IHSAA to limit the number of non-publics capturing Sectional titles - As in - Only one will make it out. That is neither here nor there as the tourney is about to be reshuffled anyway. Still, it will be interesting to see if all those find their ping pong balls in the same hopper again. The Firehawks are a member of the 12-team Greater Indianapolis Athletic Conference which has played in two divisions. EAST: Victory, Central Christian, Englewood, Tindley, Indiana Math & Science, Irvington Prep and WEST: Attucks, Christel house, Eminence, Riverside, Metro, and Washington. Current format involves playing all division teams once and concluding with a placement game vs. team in the opposite division with the same standing. Varsity Club member states that IF all return that are expected to, VCP Should be better. A trio of sr-2-b’s should be back with a couple of years of varsity under their belt. 6-0 G Jamarian Johnson, 6-3 center Terry Faint, and 6-2 forward Julian Bell should form a good base to build around. Good Varsity Club member reports last year’s JV should be no real help. Report states when they played a .500 Mooresville squad, Victory was routed by 50 points. Middle school team described as average. Eled teams are very successful. One of the bigger issues facing this program is it’s schedule. Varsity Clubber reports that the belief that facing tougher competition would better prepare VCP for the tourney etc. However, getting brains bashed in by the likes of larger schools Westfield, Mooresville, etc took its toll especially given that their conference was no pushover. Report states that new coach may have a voice in restructuring the schedule to allow for some success as this program grows. Teaching gigs aplenty: Upper Eled, HS Science, HS English, MS English, MS Art, Eled Art, Eled Engineering(?)
