Franklin boys - Departing Coach Brad Dickey
FRANKLIN, Ind. -- (Updated 4/8) Coach Dickey will not be returning for an 8th season for the Grizzly Cubs. Last year was particularly down year for the usually competitive county seat school. Aside from Sectional struggles, Franklin has been largely successful during Dickey’s tenure there. However, years of consecutive undefeated middle school groups have finally dried up. The last of that run of athletes will be juniors next year and all but a handful have chosen to play other sports. The younger groups that now wait in the wings are described as pretty awful, especially for the 4A level. Center Grove and Franklin Central are annual stumbling blocks in Sectional and Franklin is rife with downtown coaches. Grizzly Cubs were offensively challenged last year with just one player averaging in double figures (10.) Varsity Club member reports the good news is that those points are due back in the form of 5-10 sr-2-b PG Carson Hunter. Report continues that three seniors depart but most of the scoring-by-committee is expected back – the bulk of which is in the jr-2-b class. Turnovers outnumbered assists on almost every outing, and Varsity Clubber attests that will likely still be a point of contention for incoming coach and returning roster. A couple of 6-3’s and a 6-5 are the start and finish of all the height in the program right now. Franklin is part of the Mid-State Conference; Greenwood, Plainfield, Mooresville, Perry Meridian, Decatur Central, Whiteland, and Martinsville. Participates in the annual mid-season, seven team Johnson County Tourney: Center Grove, Greenwood, Greenwood Christian, Indian Creek, Edinburgh, and Whiteland. 4A Sectional 13: Center Grove, Franklin Central, Greenwood, Martinsville, Whiteland, and Shelbyville. Franklin has historically played a fairly tough non-conference schedule, but in recent years has really scaled that back. Varsity Club report concludes with this: Tough going, but competitive next two seasons. Really tough going after that. Early conflicting reports of internal interest VA Travis Miles and JV Trent Moorhead (both teach at Franklin) and admin wanting to go outside. Confirmed teaching positions: Eled, HS Math, HS ELA, HS Sped, MS Math, MS Sped. (Updated 4/9) Names of interest now include Assistant coach Trent Moorehead and Moss.
