Heck is a great coach!
In January 1998 the IHSAA waved a rule for the team Ron Hecklinski coached - the Anderson Indians - to travel to Washington DC to play National Power DeMatha in an event to bring awareness to Liver Transplants.
DeMatha's legendary coach at the time Morgan Wooten, also was afflicted wirh a Liver Ailment. Bears Hall of Famer Walter Payton.died of the same ailment that Hexklinski had. Sweetness was not as fortunate in finding a suitable donation match as Hecklinski and Wooten were.
Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Schools are not allowed to travel - or even play opponents - who are nore than 300 miles from the Indiana State Line. That is a very good rule. In that case though, it was a very good decision by the organization to allow the Indians to travel to our Nations Capitol. That decision resulted in many thousands of dollars raised to research Liver Cancers and to promote Organ Donation.
Hecklinski now coaches at Mishawaka High School and continues to advocate and promote Organ Donation.
As Hecklinski says, "Don't take your organs ro Heaven. Heaven knows we need them here!"
