What a great way to start the boys' season. Certainly would've rather have seen a Woodmen win, but all things considered, it was a real barn burner.
Score by Quarters
Greenwood 19 20 17 28 08 92
New Castle 19 26 19 20 12 96
First meeting between these schools during my 20+ years of calling Greenwood home. Played in the Woodstove tonight, and it lived up to its name. The Woodmen were without 6-5 soph starter Jeff Reynolds - should be ready to go by next week.
Young Woodmen team were led in scoring by senior Justin Conley with 21 and a trio of sophs: Max Raker (25), Brandon Kincaid (18), and Eric Muenkhaus (19)
New Castle had a big first half from 6-5 frosh frontliner Mason Gillis. Gillis would finish with game high 26 which included 18 trips to the charity stripe in the first half. New Castle entered double bonus with 7:30 left in the 2Q thanks to some difficult match-ups and Gillis' solid work under the basket. 5-9 senior guard Andrew Garrett finished with 22, and 5-11 junior David Froedge added 18.
From a Woodmen perspective, you hate to be satisfied with a loss, but one gets the feeling it was another step. A lot of talk about the development of Eric Muenkhaus during the offseason, and tonight seemed to validate that to all those that had not seen him play since last season. His baseline 3 with 1.7 left in regulation sent the game into OT. He finished 7/15 from the field.
Fellow soph Max Raker also enjoyed his best varsity outing to date. His ten 4Q points and quickness off the dribble served to break down the Trojans on numerous occasions. Also noteworthy was Brandon Kincaids work from the FT line where he went 9/9.
Still plenty of mistakes as can be expected from such a young group, but one that wouldn't give up. Greenwood missed their first 6 shots from the field during the overtime which ultimately was their undoing, but a great atmosphere for sure. Here's hoping this was another step in the right direction.
