Five Indiana teams to face five teams from Kentucky in showcase event

The 2019 Indiana-Kentucky Challenge Cup is set for Saturday, Jan. 5 at the New Castle Fieldhouse.

This is a five-game "showcase" event featuring five teams from Indiana against five teams from Kentucky. This is the sixth year for this event, where there is one girls game and four boys games throughout the day.

Teams representing Indiana are the Northwestern girls plus boys teams from North Daviess, Heritage Hills, Silver Creek and Huntington North.

The event is being coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches.

The schedule for the day is (team records as of Dec. 12, 2018):

  • Girls: Northwestern (9-2) vs. George Rogers Clark (4-0), Ky., noon EST
  • Boys: North Daviess (4-0) vs. Walton-Verona (6-0), Ky., 2 p.m. EST
  • Boys: Heritage Hills (3-1) vs. Madison Central (2-3), Ky., 4 p.m. EST
  • Boys: Silver Creek (6-0) vs. Louisville Male (5-1), Ky., 6 p.m. EST
  • Boys: Huntington North (3-2) vs. Lexington Henry Clay (5-1), Ky., 8 p.m. EST
Kentucky has won all previous events – 4-1 in 2014 in Louisville’s Freedom Hall, 3-2 in 2015 in the New Castle Fieldhouse, 3-2 in 2016 in the Frankfort (Ky.) Convention Central, 3-2 in 2017 in the New Castle Fieldhouse and 5-0 in 2018 at Central Hardin (Ky.) High School.

In five years, the event has raised about $30,000 for charities, including the Wounded Warrior Program as well as the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Admission is $8 per person for the entire day of games. Military service veterans and their immediate families will be admitted at no charge. Tickets will be available from participating schools or on game day at the New Castle Fieldhouse.

A best-of-five-game format will determine the winner of the 2019 Challenge Cup. The 10 participating teams feature multiple NCAA Division I prospects. Proceeds from the 2019 event will go to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Plans are for this event to be hosted at a Kentucky site in January 2020.
