[Tim Helfen's documentary "We Are E.C.: The Untold Story of East Chicago Basketball" took two years to make.
But the roots of the producer's project go back generations.
Helfen grew up in southern Indiana, but his great-grandparents immigrated to East Chicago from Romania. His parents are from Griffith.
"I listened to family members tell stories about the great basketball tradition, about players like Jim Bradley and Pete Trgovich, about the 1970 and 1971 teams," Helfen said. "I'm a big film buff, documentary buff, and I always had this idea. It was a great topic and a great story that needed to be told, needed to be out there, and one day I just decided I was going to do it.]
