Saw a terrific game with an amazing ending Saturday night: Archrivals Salem and Silver Creek, identical records of 21-3, ranked #1 and #5 in Class 3A. Down seven points with the clock stopped at 2:04 and free throws coming, Salem eventually won the game in regulation without once putting Silver Creek on the foul line. A sudden shift to a trapping press with about three minutes to play led to five turnovers, most of them in the backcourt. The score was tied when Salem forced a five-count to set up the winning basket. Hardnosed junior guard Karly Sweeney practically won the game single-handedly, getting a big steal and scoring all but one of the Lions' nine points down the stretch. I've seen Sweeney three times now and she is just fearless. With five seconds left, Sweeney drove between two baseline defenders, somehow retaining control of the ball and scooping a shot off the glass just before the buzzer. She finished with 19 points. Worth the treacherous drive down Rt 160.
