[Thompson scored 21 points in the 1988 state championship game as the top-ranked Bearcats took down No. 2 Concord and future NBA star Shawn Kemp. Thompson was third in the Mr. Basketball voting that season. Coming back to his alma mater to coach, like former coach Jeff Holloway, creates an interesting dynamic, but Thompson isn't worried.
"As a basketball player, you look forward to pressure because I think that’s what makes champions," Thompson said. "To feel pressure and worry about what others think of me as a coach, player or leader, I’m not worried about it. I need to do what I have to for the kids.
