Lairy, Mangas and Perry named IBCA Players of the Week
Bosse junior, Warsaw senior and Indianapolis Lutheran senior receive honors for week of March 6-11
Evansville Bosse junior Mekhi Lairy averaged 37.5 points and 9.5 assists in a pair of games, leading the Bulldogs to the championship of the Class 3A Washington Regional and earning honors as an IBCA/Subway Player of the Week.
Lairy is joined by Warsaw senior Kyle Mangas and Indianapolis Lutheran senior Brandon Perry as recipients for March 6-11 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Mangas is the winner for District 1. Perry is the recipient for District 2. Lairy received accolades for District 3.
The 5-8 Lairy poured in a career-high 40 points with seven rebounds and eight assists as Bosse outlasted Brownstown Central 81-71 in overtime in a semifinal game. Lairy followed with 35 points, six rebounds and 11 assists as the Bulldogs (20-7) ran past Pike Central 94-66 for the regional crown.
Lairy converted 13-of-25 field goals, 2-of-7 3-pointers and 12-of-13 free throws against Brownstown. He hit 14-of-20 shots, 4-of-6 3-pointers and 3-of-3 free throws against Pike Central.
The 6-3 Mangas also produced a career-high in his first game, unloading 47 points with nine rebounds, two assists and three steals as Warsaw edged East Chicago Central 61-59 in double overtime. The Indiana Wesleyan University recruit then tallied 24 points with two rebounds, one assist and four steals as the Tigers (18-10) dropped a 50-46 decision to Merrillville in the Class 4A Michigan City Regional final.
Averaging 30.5 points over both games, Mangas was 15-of-23 from the field, including 2-of-5 on 3-pointers, and 15-of-17 on free throws against East Chicago Central. He sank 7-of-14 shots, including 3-of-8 from long range, plus 7-of-8 free throws against Merrillville.
The 6-0 Perry averaged 25.0 points and provided a pair of double-doubles as Indianapolis Lutheran (12-13) finished as runner-up to Indianapolis Tindley in the Class A regional at Martinsville. Perry opened with 25 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and one steal as the Saints defeated Hauser 66-60 in the semifinal round. He tallied another 25 points with 10 rebounds, two assists and one steal as Lutheran lost to Tindley 78-62 in the title game.
Perry made 8-of-19 field goals, 2-of-4 3-pointers and 7-of-9 free throws against Hauser. He converted 9-of-16 shots, including 4-of-5 3-pointers, and 3-of-4 free throws against Tindley.
This is the ninth season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the fifth season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its sixth season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to "train hard and eat fresh."
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA's three districts. Boys winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 25. The girls’ season is complete.
